A methodology based on reduced complexity algorithm for system applications using microprocessors

The paper considers a methodology on the analysis and design of a minimum mean-square error criterion linear system incorporating a tapped delay line (TDL) where all the full-precision multiplications in the TDL are constrained to be powers of two. A linear equalizer based on the dispersive and additive noise channel is presented. This microprocessor implementation with optimized power of two TDL coefficients achieves a system performance comparable to the optimum linear equalization with full-precision multiplications for an input data rate of 300 baud.

A proposed architecture for a satellite-based mobile communications network - The lowest three layers

Architecture for a commercial mobile satellite network is proposed. The mobile satellite system (MSS) is composed of a network management center, mobile terminals, base stations, and gateways; the functions of each component are described. The satellite is a 'bent pipe' that performs frequency translations, and it has multiple UHF beams. The development of the MSS design based on the seven-layer open system interconnection model is examined. Consideration is given to the functions of the physical, data link, and network layers and the integrated adaptive mobile access protocol.

Quadratic integer programming for large scale banded matrices

This paper is concerned with the integer quadratic program where the variables are constrained to belong to a given set of discrete values. This quadratic integer program is shown to be equivalent to a problem of finding the shortest path in a particular directed graph called a trellis when the matrix is a positive-definite symmetric banded matrix. An efficient procedure for solving this shortest path problem is presented which allows the solution of the integer quadratic program. This method is particularly effective when the half-bandwidth of the matrix is significantly smaller than its dimension.

An efficient technique for the performance evaluation of antenna arrays with noisy carrier reference

An efficient computational technique is developed to evaluate the performance of coherent receivers with noisy carrier reference and multiple antennas. The received signal is assumed to be uncoded residual carrier BPSK (binary phase shift keying), with a PLL (phase locked loop) used for extracting the carrier. Explicit relationships between the error probabilities and the various system parameters are given. Specific results are given for the performance gain of combined carrier referencing over baseband only combining when the channel alignment process is ideal. A simple asymptotic expression for the performance gain is determined when the number of antennas used is increased without bound. An example using a Block 3 Deep Space Network PLL illustrates the performance of each arraying structure. The technique used is applicable to the performance evaluation for other receivers having similar decision statistics.

On the power spectral density of quadrature modulated signals

The conventional (no-offset) quadriphase modulation technique suffers from the fact that hardlimiting will restore the frequency sidelobes removed by proper filtering. Thus, offset keyed quadriphase modulation techniques are often proposed for satellite communication with bandpass hardlimiting. A unified theory is developed which is capable of describing the power spectral density before and after the hardlimiting process. Using the in-phase and the quadrature phase channel with arbitrary pulse shaping, analytical results are established for generalized quadriphase modulation. In particular MSK, OPSK or the recently introduced overlapped raised cosine keying all fall into this general category. It is shown that for a linear communication channel, the power spectral density of the modulated signal remains unchanged regardless of the offset delay. Furthermore, if the in phase and the quadrature phase channel have identical pulse shapes without offset, the spectrum after bandpass hardlimiting will be identical to that of the conventional QPSK modulation. Numerical examples are given for various modulation techniques. A case of different pulse shapes in the in phase and the quadrature phase channel is also considered.

Theory and implementation of a fast algorithm linear equalizer

The theory and implementation of a multiplication-free linear mean-square error criterion equalizer for data transmission are considered. For many real-time signal processing situations, a large number of multiplications is objectionable. The linear estimation problem on a binary computer is considered where the estimation parameters are constrained to be powers of two and thus all multiplications are replaced by shifts. The optimal solution is obtained from an integer-programming-like problem except that the allowable discrete points are non-integers. The branch-and-bound algorithm is used to obtain the coefficients of the equalization TDL. Specific experimental performance results are given for an equalizer implemented with a 12 bit A/D device and a 8080 microprocessor.
