G2 Chromatid Damage and Repair Kinetics in Normal Human Fibroblast Cells Exposed to Low-or High-LET Radiation

Radiation-induced chromosome damage can be measured in interphase using the Premature Chromosome Condensation (PCC) technique. With the introduction of a new PCC technique using the potent phosphatase inhibitor calyculin-A, chromosomes can be condensed within five minutes, and it is now possible to examine the early damage induced by radiation. Using this method, it has been shown that high-LET radiation induces a higher frequency of chromatid breaks and a much higher frequency of isochromatid breaks than low-LET radiation. The kinetics of chromatid break rejoining consists of two exponential components representing a rapid and a slow time constant, which appears to be similar for low- and high- LET radiations. However, after high-LET radiation exposures, the rejoining process for isochromatid breaks influences the repair kinetics of chromatid-type breaks, and this plays an important role in the assessment of chromatid break rejoining in the G2 phase of the cell cycle.

Interstellar cyanomethane

An observational study was made of the newly identified cyanomethane radical CH2CN and the possibly related species CH3CN with the goals of elucidating the possible role of reactions of the type CnHm(+) + N in astrochemistry, and providing a possible test of Bates's models of dissociative electron recombination. A remarkably different abundance ratio CH2CN/CH3CN was found in TMC-1 and Sgr B2 which is deduced to be a result of the large difference in temperature of these objects. Studies of CH2CN and CH3CN in other sources, including two new detections of CH2CN, support this conclusion and are consistent with a monotonic increase in the CH2CN/CH3CN ratio with decreasing temperature over the range 10-120 K. This behavior may be explained by the destruction of CH2CN by reaction with O.

Monolithic cascade-type solar cells

Solar cells consist of a semiconductor base, a bottom cell with a band-gap energy of E1, and a top cell with a band-gap energy of E2, and 0.96 E1 1.36 eV and (0.80 E + 0.77) eV E2 (0.80 E1 + 0.92) eV. A monolithic cascade-type solar cell was prepared with an n(+)-type GaAs base, a GaInAs bottom solar cell, and a GaAiInAs top solar cell. The surface of the cell is coated with a SiO antireflection film. The efficiency of the cell is 32%.

Modified electrical connector

A removable interfacial insulator design concept is described that simplifies electrical connector repairability when damage occurs to male electrical contacts or resilient interfacial seal.
