Parasitic conduction loss of lithium niobate on insulator platform

Thin-film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) has recently emerged as an exciting platform for nonlinear integrated photonic devices, drawing parallels with the impact of silicon on insulator (SOI) in the electronic device realm. While the influence of interfacial states of SOI on electronic device performance, particularly their contribution to parasitic radio frequency (RF) losses, is well-documented, this aspect remains relatively unexplored in LNOI, despite their shared silicon/oxide interface structure. Here, we investigate the RF loss arising from mobile charges at the silicon/oxide interface of the LNOI platform. We show that this parasitic conduction can be exacerbated, especially during plasma etching, and leads to substantial RF losses. Through strategic incorporation of a trap-rich poly-silicon layer at this interface, we effectively eliminate this parasitic conduction, resulting in the suppression of RF losses. This work establishes crucial guidelines for harnessing LNOI in applications such as high-frequency electro-mechanical devices, high-speed electro-optic modulators, and high-efficiency microwave-to-optics converters.

Light-induced microwave noise in superconducting microwave-optical transducers

Microwave-to-optical transducers are integral to the future of superconducting quantum computing, as they would enable scaling and long-distance communication of superconducting quantum processors through optical-fiber links. However, optically induced microwave noise poses a significant challenge in achieving quantum transduction between microwave and optical frequencies. In this work, we study light-induced microwave noise in an integrated electro-optical transducer harnessing the Pockels effect of thin-film lithium niobate. We reveal three sources of added noise with distinctive time constants ranging from sub-100 ns to milliseconds. Furthermore, our results provide insights into the mechanisms and corresponding mitigation strategies for light-induced microwave noise in superconducting microwave-optical transducers and pave the way toward realizing the ultimate goal of quantum transduction.

Power converter having a gate drive circuit and method of operating

A power converter apparatus comprises a set of switching elements communicatively coupled with a set of gate drive circuits. Each gate drive circuit is configured to provide a respective drive signal to a corresponding switching element, each switching element being switchably responsive to the respective drive signal. The apparatus includes a controller module configured to control an output state of the power converter, and selectively change one of a respective gate resistance and a respective gate current of a corresponding subset of the gate drive circuits based on the output state of the power converter.

Light-Induced Dynamic Frequency Shifting of Microwave Photons in a Superconducting Electro-Optic Converter

Hybrid superconducting-photonic microresonators are a promising platform for realizing microwave-to-optical transduction. However, the absorption of scattered photons by the superconductors leads to unintended microwave resonance-frequency variation and line-width broadening. Here, we experimentally study the dynamics of this effect and its impact on microwave-to-optics conversion in an integrated lithium niobate–superconductor hybrid-resonator platform. Here, we unveil an adiabatic frequency shifting of the intracavity microwave photons induced by the fast photoresponses of the thin-film superconducting resonator. As a result, the temporal and spectral responses of electro-optics transduction are modified and well described by our theoretical model. This work provides insights into the light-induced conversion dynamics that must be considered in future designs of hybrid superconducting-photonic system.
