Hyperbolic exciton polaritons in a van der Waals magnet

Abstract Exciton polaritons are quasiparticles of photons coupled strongly to bound electron-hole pairs, manifesting as an anti-crossing light dispersion near an exciton resonance. Highly anisotropic semiconductors with opposite-signed permittivities along different crystal axes are predicted to host exotic modes inside the anti-crossing called hyperbolic exciton polaritons (HEPs), which confine light subdiffractionally with enhanced density of states. Here, we show observational evidence of steady-state HEPs in the van der Waals magnet chromium sulfide bromide (CrSBr) using a cryogenic near-infrared near-field microscope. At low temperatures, in the magnetically-ordered state, anisotropic exciton resonances sharpen, driving the permittivity negative along one crystal axis and enabling HEP propagation. We characterize HEP momentum and losses in CrSBr, also demonstrating coupling to excitonic sidebands and enhancement by magnetic order: which boosts exciton spectral weight via wavefunction delocalization. Our findings open new pathways to nanoscale manipulation of excitons and light, including routes to magnetic, nonlocal, and quantum polaritonics.

Ultrafast Nanoimaging of Spin-Mediated Shear Waves in an Acoustic Cavity

Strong spin–lattice coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets shows potential for innovative magneto-mechanical applications. Here, nanoscale and picosecond imaging by ultrafast electron microscopy reveal heterogeneous spin-mediated coherent acoustic phonon dynamics in a thin-film cavity of the vdW antiferromagnet FePS3. The harmonics of the interlayer shear acoustic modes are observed, in which the even and odd harmonics exhibit distinct nanoscopic dynamics. Corroborated by acoustic wave simulation, the role of defects in forming even harmonics is elucidated. Above the Néel temperature (T N ), the interlayer shear acoustic harmonics are suppressed, while the in-plane traveling wave is predominantly excited. The dominant acoustic dynamics shifts from the out-of-plane shear to the in-plane traveling wave across T N , demonstrating that magnetic properties can influence phonon scattering pathways. In conclusion, the spatiotemporally resolved structural characterization provides valuable nanoscopic insights for interlayer-shear-mode-based acoustic cavities, opening up possibilities for magneto-mechanical applications of vdW magnets.

Extrinsic Nonlinear Kerr Rotation in Topological Materials under a Magnetic Field

Topological properties in quantum materials are often governed by symmetry and tuned by crystal structure and external fields, and hence, symmetry-sensitive nonlinear optical measurements in a magnetic field are a valuable probe. Here, we report nonlinear magneto-optical second harmonic generation (SHG) studies of nonmagnetic topological materials including bilayer WTe 2 , monolayer WSe 2 , and bulk TaAs. The polarization-resolved patterns of optical SHG under a magnetic field show nonlinear Kerr rotation in these time-reversal symmetric materials. For materials with 3-fold rotational symmetric lattice structure, the SHG polarization pattern rotates just slightly in a magnetic field, whereas in those with mirror or 2-fold rotational symmetry, the SHG polarization pattern rotates greatly and distorts. Further, these different magneto-SHG characters can be understood by considering the superposition of the magnetic field-induced time-noninvariant nonlinear optical tensor and the crystal-structure-based time-invariant counterpart. The situation is further clarified by scrutinizing the Faraday rotation, whose subtle interplay with crystal symmetry accounts for the diverse behavior of the extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in different materials. Our work illustrates the application of magneto-SHG techniques to directly probe nontrivial topological properties, and underlines the importance of minimizing extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in polarization-resolved magneto-optical studies.

Observation of flat and weakly dispersing bands in the van der Waals semiconductor Nb 3 Br 8 with breathing kagome lattice

Niobium halides, Nb 3 ⁢X 8 (X=Cl,Br,I), which are predicted two-dimensional magnets, have recently gotten attention due to their breathing kagome geometry. Here we have studied the electronic structure of Nb 3⁢ Br 8 by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. ARPES results depict the presence of multiple flat and weakly dispersing bands. These bands are well explained by the theoretical calculations, which show they have Nbd character indicating their origination from the Nb atoms forming the breathing kagome plane. This van der Waals material can be easily thinned down via mechanical exfoliation to the ultrathin limit and such ultrathin samples are stable as depicted from the time-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements at room temperature. Finally, these results demonstrate that Nb 3 ⁢Br 8 is an excellent material not only for studying breathing kagome induced flat band physics and its connection with magnetism but also for heterostructure fabrication and for practical application.
