Discovery of Graphene-Water Membrane Structure: Toward High-Quality Graphene Process

It is widely accepted that solid-state membranes are indispensable media for the graphene process, particularly transfer procedures. But these membranes inevitably bring contaminations and residues to the transferred graphene and consequently compromise the material quality. This study reports a newly observed free-standing graphene-water membrane structure, which replaces the conventional solid-state supporting media with liquid film to sustain the graphene integrity and continuity. Experimental observation, theoretical model, and molecular dynamics simulations consistently indicate that the high surface tension of pure water and its large contact angle with graphene are essential factors for forming such a membrane structure. More interestingly, water surface tension ensures the flatness of graphene layers and renders high transfer quality on many types of target substrates. This report enriches the understanding of the interactions on reduced dimensional material while rendering an alternative approach for scalable layered material processing with ensured quality for advanced manufacturing.

Three-Dimensional Printable, Extremely Soft, Stretchable, and Reversible Elastomers from Molecular Architecture-Directed Assembly

3D printing elastomers enables the fabrication of many technologically important structures and devices such as tissue scaffolds, sensors, actuators, and soft robots. However, conventional 3D printable elastomers are intrinsically stiff; moreover, the process of printing often requires external mechanical support and/or post-treatment. In this work, we exploit the self-assembly of a responsive linear-bottlebrush-linear triblock copolymer to create stimuli-reversible, extremely soft, and stretchable elastomers and demonstrate their applicability as inks for in situ direct-write printing 3D structures without the aid of external mechanical support or post-treatment. By developing a procedure for controlled synthesis of such architecturally designed block copolymers, we create elastomers with extensibility up to 600% and Young’s moduli down to ~10 2 Pa, 10 6 times softer than plastics and more than 102 times softer than all existing 3D printable elastomers. Moreover, the elastomers are thermostable and remain to be solid up to 180 °C, yet they are 100% solvent-reprocessable. Their extreme softness, stretchability, thermostability, and solvent-reprocessability bode well for future applications.

Probing Molecular Assembly of Small Organic Molecules during Meniscus-Guided Coating Using Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Approaches

Evaporation-based thin-film coating processes are ubiquitous in fields such as organic electronics, dye coatings, and the pharmaceutical industry. Based on experimental observations of enhanced thin-film alignment during meniscus-guided coating (MGC), a molecular dynamics simulation was developed to describe the thin-film formation that occurs due to the interplay between evaporation and fluid dynamics. The process of solvent evaporation from solution is first examined, which leads to the formation of a solid thin film after evaporation is complete. Next, an MGC process was simulated by introducing a flow profile coupled with the evaporative system. In this work, we gain insights into how molecules respond and reorient in the presence of a flow profile. These results indicate that both the evaporation and the flow profile have an impact on orienting small molecules in a thin film during the MCG process. Combining experimental techniques with simulations helps enhance the understanding of the forces that are significant in directing molecular aggregation during coating processes.
