Robust Sliding Window Synchronizer Developed

The development of an advanced robust timing synchronization scheme is crucial for the support of two NASA programs--Advanced Air Transportation Technologies and Aviation Safety. A mobile aeronautical channel is a dynamic channel where various adverse effects--such as Doppler shift, multipath fading, and shadowing due to precipitation, landscape, foliage, and buildings--cause the loss of symbol timing synchronization.

Modulation Study for Beam Steerable Reflectarray Antennas

The reflectarray antenna is a power-efficient antenna but with an inherent intersymbol interference (ISI) problem with digital modulations. The composite signal model of a reflectarray is established. The ISI is characterized by the signal components delays. The feed-to-element distance and the element-to-observation distance contribute to the total delay, with the latter having the major effect. The effect of typical phase shifters' phase errors is analyzed and evaluated. Simulations are performed. The analytical and simulation results for an example reflectarray at f(sub c) = 26.5 GHz and bit rate of 1.325 Gbps show that the BER degradation due to ISI is proportional to the symbol rate and the loss ranges from less than 1 dB to around 2 dB in E(sub b)/N(sub o), depending on original E(sub b)/N(sub o), for BPSK, QPSK, 8PSK and 16QAM. The phase error effect is negligible for lower order modulations and is unacceptable for higher order modulations such as 64 and 256QAM.

The Effect of Doppler Frequency Shift, Frequency Offset of the Local Oscillators, and Phase Noise on the Performance of Coherent OFDM Receivers

This paper first shows that the Doppler frequency shift affects the frequencies of the RF carrier, subcarriers, envelope, and symbol timing by the same percentage in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal or any other modulated signals. Then the SNR degradation of an OFDM system due to Doppler frequency shift, frequency offset of the local oscillators and phase noise is analyzed. Expressions are given and values for 4-, 16-, 64-, and 256-QAM OFDM systems are calculated and plotted. The calculations show that the Doppler shift of the D3 project is about 305 kHz, and the degradation due to it is about 0.01 to 0.04 dB, which is negligible. The degradation due to frequency offset and phase noise of local oscillators will be the main source of degradation. To keep the SNR degradation under 0.1 dB, the relative frequency offset due to local oscillators must be below 0.01 for the 16 QAM-OFDM. This translates to an offset of 1.55 MHz (0.01 x 155 MHz) or a stability of 77.5 ppm (0.01 x 155 MHz/20 GHz) for the DI project. To keep the SNR degradation under 0.1 dB, the relative linewidth (0) due to phase noise of the local oscillators must be below 0.0004 for the 16 QAM-OFDM. This translates to a linewidth of 0.062 MHz (0.0004 x 155 MHz) of the 20 GHz RIF carrier. For a degradation of 1 dB, beta = 0.04, and the linewidth can be relaxed to 6.2 MHz.

A small terminal for satellite communication systems

A small portable, low-cost satellite communications terminal system incorporating a modulator/demodulator and convolutional-Viterbi coder/decoder is described. Advances in signal processing and error-correction techniques in combination with higher power and higher frequencies aboard satellites allow for more efficient use of the space segment. This makes it possible to design small economical earth stations. The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) was chosen to test the system. ACTS, operating at the Ka band incorporates higher power, higher frequency, frequency and spatial reuse using spot beams and polarization.
