Anomalous proximitized transport in metal/quantum magnet heterostructure Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here, we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 ultrathin film on a single crystal of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 resistance in correspondence with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spincorrelation function of Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 , which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multiphase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 can be effectively tuned by a magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations (QSFs) as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in Yb 2 Ti 2 O 7 . In this study, we establish a pathway for harnessing QSFs in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

IrGe 4 : A Predicted Weyl-Metal with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Polycrystalline IrGe4 was synthesized by annealing elements at 800 °C for 240 h, and the composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. IrGe 4 adopts a chiral crystal structure (space group P3 1 21) instead of a polar crystal structure (P3 1 ), which was corroborated by the convergent-beam electron diffraction and Rietveld refinements using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure features layers of IrGe 8 polyhedra along the b axis, and the layers are connected by edge- and corner-sharing. Each layer consists of corner-shared [Ir 3 Ge 20 ] trimers, which are formed by three IrGe 8 polyhedra connected by edge-sharing. Temperature-dependent resistivity indicates metallic behavior. The magnetoresistance increases with increasing applied magnetic field, and the nonsaturating magnetoresistance reaches 11.5% at 9 T and 10 K. The Hall resistivity suggests that holes are the majority carrier type, with a carrier concentration of 4.02 × 10 21 cm –3 at 300 K. In conclusion, electronic band structures calculated by density functional theory reveal a Weyl point with a chiral charge of +3 above the Fermi level.

Stretchable Photodiodes with Polymer-Engineered Semiconductor Nanowires for Wearable Photoplethysmography

Healthcare systems worldwide have been stressed to provide sufficient resources to serve the increasing and aging population in our society. The situation became more challenging at the time of pandemic. Technology advancement, especially the adoption of wearable health monitoring devices, has provided an important supplement to current clinical equipment. Most health monitoring devices are rigid, however, human tissues are soft. Such a difference has prohibited intimate contact between the two and jeopardized wearing comfortableness, which hurdles measurement accuracy especially during longtime usage. Here, in this work, we report a soft and stretchable photodiode that can conformally adhere onto the human body without any pressure and measure cardiovascular variables for an extended period with higher reliability than commercial devices. The photodiode used a composite light absorber consisting of an organic bulk heterojunction embedded into an elastic polymer matrix. It is discovered that the elastic polymer matrix not only improves the morphology of the bulk heterojunction for obtaining the desired mechanical properties but also alters its electronic band structure and improves the electrical properties that lead to a reduced dark current and enhanced photovoltage in the stretchable photodiode. The work has demonstrated high fidelity measurements and longtime monitoring of heat rate variability and oxygen saturation, potentially enabling next-generation wearable photoplethysmography devices for point-of-care diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases in a more accessible and affordable way.

Anomalous magnetoresistance by breaking ice rule in Bi2Ir2O7/Dy2Ti2O7 heterostructure

Abstract While geometrically frustrated quantum magnets host rich exotic spin states with potentials for revolutionary quantum technologies, most of them are necessarily good insulators which are difficult to be integrated with modern electrical circuit. The grand challenge is to electrically detect the emergent fluctuations and excitations by introducing charge carriers that interact with the localized spins without destroying their collective spin states. Here, we show that, by designing a Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 /Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 heterostructure, the breaking of the spin-ice rule in insulating Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 leads to a charge response in the conducting Bi 2 Ir 2 O 7 measured as anomalous magnetoresistance during the field-induced Kagome ice-to-saturated ice transition. The magnetoresistive anomaly also captures the characteristic angular and temperature dependence of this ice-rule-breaking transition, which has been understood as magnetic monopole condensation. These results demonstrate a novel heteroepitaxial approach for electronically probing the transition between exotic insulating spin states, laying out a blueprint for the metallization of frustrated quantum magnets.

Coexistence of Merons with Skyrmions in the Centrosymmetric Van Der Waals Ferromagnet Fe 5– x GeTe 2

Fe 5-x GeTe 2 is a centrosymmetric, layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet that displays Curie temperatures T c (270–330 K) that are within the useful range for spintronic applications. However, little is known about the interplay between its topological spin textures (e.g., merons, skyrmions) with technologically relevant transport properties such as the topological Hall effect (THE) or topological thermal transport. Here, via high-resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, it is shown that merons and anti-meron pairs coexist with Néel skyrmions in Fe 5-x GeTe 2 over a wide range of temperatures and probe their effects on thermal and electrical transport. A THE is detected, even at room T, that senses merons at higher T's, as well as their coexistence with skyrmions as T is lowered, indicating an on-demand thermally driven formation of either type of spin texture. Remarkably, an unconventional THE is also observed in absence of Lorentz force, and it is attributed to the interaction between charge carriers and magnetic field-induced chiral spin textures. Here these results expose Fe 5-x GeTe 2 as a promising candidate for the development of applications in skyrmionics/meronics due to the interplay between distinct but coexisting topological magnetic textures and unconventional transport of charge/heat carriers.

Multifunctional Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe): Polar Semiconducting Antiferromagnets with Nonlinear Optical Properties

In this work, Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe) polycrystalline and single-crystal materials were prepared with high-temperature solid-state and chemical vapor transport methods, respectively. The polar crystal structure (space group Pmn2 1 ) consists of chains of corner-sharing and distorted CuS 4 , Mn/FeS 4 , and SiS 4 tetrahedra, which is confirmed by Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data, X-ray single-crystal refinement, electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. Magnetic measurements indicate that both compounds order antiferromagnetically at 8 and 14 K, respectively, which is supported by the temperature-dependent (100–2 K) neutron powder diffraction data. Additional magnetic reflections observed at 2 K can be modeled by magnetic propagation vectors k = (1/2,0,1/2) and k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) for Cu 2 MnSiS 4 and Cu 2 FeSiS 4 , respectively. The refined antiferromagnetic structure reveals that the Mn/Fe spins are canted away from the ac plane by about 14°, with the total magnetic moments of Mn and Fe being 4.1(1) and 2.9(1) μ B , respectively. Both compounds exhibit an SHG response with relatively modest second-order nonlinear susceptibilities. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the electronic band structures.

Reconciling monolayer and bilayer Jeff = 1/2 square lattices in hybrid oxide superlattice

The number of atomic layers confined in a two-dimensional structure is crucial for the electronic and magnetic properties. Single-layer and bilayer J eff = 1/2 square lattices are well-known examples where the presence of the extra layer turns the XY anisotropy to the c-axis anisotropy. We report on experimental realization of a hybrid SrIrO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattice that integrates monolayer and bilayer square lattices in one layered structure. By synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering, magnetization, and resistivity measurements, we found that the hybrid superlattice exhibits properties that are distinct from both the single-layer and bilayer systems and cannot be explained by a simple addition of them. In particular, the entire hybrid superlattice orders simultaneously through a single antiferromagnetic transition at temperatures similar to the bilayer system but with all the J eff = 1/2 moments mainly pointing in the ab plane similar to the single-layer system. The results show that bringing monolayer and bilayer with orthogonal properties in proximity to each other in a hybrid superlattice structure is a powerful way to stabilize a unique state not obtainable in a uniform structure.

Quality Control Metrics to Assess MoS2 Sputtered Films for Tribological Applications

Abstract Pure molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) solid lubricant coatings could attain densities comparable to doped films (and the associated benefits to wear rate and environmental stability) through manipulation of the microstructure via deposition parameters. Unfortunately, pure films can exhibit highly variable microstructures and mechanical properties due to processes that are not controlled during deposition (i.e., batch-to-batch variation). This work focuses on developing a relationship between density, hardness, friction, and wear for pure sputtered MoS 2 coatings. Results show that dense films ( ρ = 4.5 g/cm 3 ) exhibit a 100 × lower wear rate compared to porous coatings ( ρ = 3.04–3.55 g/cm 3 ). The tribological performance of high density pure MoS 2 coatings is shown to surpass that of established composite coatings, achieving a wear rate 2 × ( k = 5.74 × 10 –8 mm 3 /Nm) lower than composite MoS 2 /Sb 2 O 3 /Au in inert environments.

Iridate Li8IrO 6 : An Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this work, a polycrystalline iridate Li 8 IrO 6 material was prepared via heating Li 2 O and IrO 2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li 8 IrO 6 adopts the nonpolar space group $R\bar{3}$ with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO 4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO 6 and LiO 6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c -axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir 4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li 8 IrO 6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment $μ_{\text{eff}}$ (Ir) = 1.73 $μ_{\text{B}}$ and insulating character indicate that Li 8 IrO 6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.
