Robust measurement of wave function topology on NISQ quantum computers

Topological quantum phases of quantum materials are defined through their topological invariants. These topological invariants are quantities that characterize the global geometrical properties of the quantum wave functions and thus are immune to local noise. Here, we present a strategy to measure topological invariants on quantum computers. We show that our strategy can be easily integrated with the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) so that the topological properties of generic quantum many-body states can be characterized on current quantum hardware. We demonstrate the robust nature of the method by measuring topological invariants for both non-interacting and interacting models, and map out interacting quantum phase diagrams on quantum simulators and IBM quantum hardware.

High-performance piezoelectric composites via β phase programming

Polymer-ceramic piezoelectric composites, combining high piezoelectricity and mechanical flexibility, have attracted increasing interest in both academia and industry. However, their piezoelectric activity is largely limited by intrinsically low crystallinity and weak spontaneous polarization. Here, we propose a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene anchoring method to manipulate the intermolecular interactions within the all-trans conformation of a polymer matrix. Employing phase-field simulation and molecular dynamics calculations, we show that OH surface terminations on the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets offer hydrogen bonding with the fluoropolymer matrix, leading to dipole alignment and enhanced net spontaneous polarization of the polymer-ceramic composites. We then translated this interfacial bonding strategy into electrospinning to boost the piezoelectric response of samarium doped Pb (Mg1/3Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 /polyvinylidene fluoride composite nanofibers by 160% via Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets inclusion. With excellent piezoelectric and mechanical attributes, the as-electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers can be easily integrated into the conventional shoe insoles to form a foot sensor network for all-around gait patterns monitoring, walking habits identification and Metatarsalgi prognosis. This work utilizes the interfacial coupling mechanism of intermolecular anchoring as a strategy to develop high-performance piezoelectric composites for wearable electronics.

Determining quantum phase diagrams of topological Kitaev-inspired models on NISQ quantum hardware

Topological protection is employed in fault-tolerant error correction and in developing quantum algorithms with topological qubits. But, topological protection intrinsic to models being simulated , also robustly protects calculations, even on NISQ hardware. We leverage it by simulating Kitaev-inspired models on IBM quantum computers and accurately determining their phase diagrams. This requires constructing conventional quantum circuits for Majorana braiding to prepare the ground states of Kitaev-inspired models. The entanglement entropy is then measured to calculate the quantum phase boundaries. We show how maintaining particle-hole symmetry when sampling through the Brillouin zone is critical to obtaining high accuracy. This work illustrates how topological protection intrinsic to a quantum model can be employed to perform robust calculations on NISQ hardware, when one measures the appropriate protected quantum properties. It opens the door for further simulation of topological quantum models on quantum hardware available today.

Chirality Amplified: Long, Discrete Helicene Nanoribbons

Here we report the synthesis of two polyhelicene frameworks consisting, from end-to-end, of 18 and 24 fused benzene rings. The latter exhibits the largest electronic circular dichroism in the visible spectrum of any molecule. These shape-persistent helical nanoribbons incorporate multiple helicenes, a class of contorted polycyclic aromatic molecules consisting of ortho-annulated rings. These conjugated, chiral molecules have interesting chemical, biological, and chiroptical properties; however, there are very few helicenes with extraordinary chiroptical response over a broad range of the visible spectrum—a key criterion for applications such as chiral optoelectronics. In this report, we show that coupling the polyhelicene framework with multiple perylene-diimide subunits elicits a significant chiroptic response. Notably, the molar circular dichroism increases faster than the absorptivity of these molecules as their helical axis lengthens. Computational analysis reveals that the greatly amplified circular dichroism arises from exciton-like interactions between the perylene-diimide and the helicene moieties. As a result, we predict that even greater chiroptic enhancement will result from further axial elongation of these nanoribbons, which can be readily enabled via the iterative synthetic method presented herein.
