Deep Learning Based Frequency Stability Assessment in Power Grid with High Renewables

Frequency stability assessment is one critical aspect of power system security assessment. Traditional N-1 screening method is based on the simulations of a few typical daily and seasonal operation scenarios. However, the increasing integration of inverter-based renewables and the retirement of conventional synchronous generators result in decreasing system inertia and growing complexity of system operating conditions. Selecting a few typical operation scenarios cannot cover all operating conditions, and the time-domain simulation of all operation conditions requires tremendous time. This paper proposes a more efficient frequency stability assessment method based on deep learning. The affinity propagation clustering algorithm is used to divide the dataset into different clusters, so the selected dataset for training can cover the diversified operating conditions as much as possible. Also, feature normalization is applied to both the training dataset and testing dataset in order to remove any unnecessary bias. Especially, trained model based on full dataset normalization has bounded error in the prediction. The case study on the reduced 240-bus WECC system demonstrates that the proposed method can predict accurate frequency nadir with limited training dataset. The deep learning model using the revised feature normalization can predict more accurate frequency nadir than that using the traditional feature normalization and has very small maximum prediction error.

Improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers with asymmetric conducting branches

Here, this paper proposes two improved multiline HVDC circuit breakers (DCBs) for HVDC grid applications, including type-1 improved multiline DCB and type-2 improved multiline DCB. The two improved DCBs draw on the core idea of extended H-bridge. m adjacent DC transmission lines share a single main breaker (MB) and surge arrester. Due to the extended H-bridge design, bidirectional current flow can be achieved by a unidirectional MB. An upper conducting branch and a lower conducting branch are connected to a DC line. The upper and lower conducting branches in the two improved multiline DCBs are asymmetric. The upper conducting branch of both two improved DCBs is formed by a load commutation switch (LCS) and an ultra-fast disconnector (UFD). The lower conducting branch of the type-1 improved scheme is composed of a diode and a UFD; and of the type-2 improved scheme is made up of diode stack. Compared with other DCBs, the proposed type-1 DCB and type-2 DCB are more cost effective. Among the five DCBs, the type-2 improved scheme requires the least number of individual switching actions. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed schemes are verified through simulation of a bipolar three-terminal HVDC grid in PSCAD/EMTDC.

Optimized allocation method of the VSC-MTDC system for frequency regulation reserves considering the cost

In recent years, the interconnection of asynchronous power grids through the VSC-MTDC system has been proposed and extensively studied in light of the potential benefits of economical bulk power exchanges and frequency regulation reserves sharing. This paper proposed an optimized allocation method for sharing frequency regulation reserves among the interconnected power systems and the corresponding frequency regulation control of the VSC-MTDC system under emergency frequency deviation events. Firstly, the frequency regulation reserve classification is proposed. In the classification, the available frequency response capacity reserves of each interconnection are divided into commercial reserves and regular reserves. While the commercial reserves are procured through long-term contracts, the regular reserves are purchased based on market prices of frequency regulation services. Secondly, based on the proposed frequency regulation reserve classification, a novel frequency regulation control is then introduced for the VSC-MTDC system. This control method could minimize the costs of the disturbed power grid for the needed frequency response supports from the other power grids. Simulation verifications are performed on a modified IEEE 39 bus system and a highly reduced power system model representing the North American grids. The simulation verification indicates that the developed frequency regulation control significantly reduced ancillary service costs of the disturbed power grid.

VSC-HVDC Interties for Urban Power Grid Enhancement

Urban power grids are facing many operational and expansion challenges to meet further demand growth and increased reliability requirements. Advanced transmission technologies have been considered by the electric utilities to effectively increase the utilization of existing infrastructure and operational flexibility. The focus of this paper is on VSC-HVDC technologies for urban power grid enhancement and modernization. First, a potential technical scheme is proposed for converting an existing AC circuit to DC operation, which could boost the power transfer capability of the critical transmission corridor and increase network operational flexibility. Second, this paper proposes three operation modes for the VSC-HVDC interties in urban power grids corresponding to normal, emergency and island operating conditions, respectively. An integrated, adaptive emergency control strategy (AEC) is proposed that can enable adaptive power flow responses of the VSC-HVDC intertie under varying system operating conditions and critical contingencies. The flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed operational principles of urban VSC-HVDC intertie and the corresponding control strategies are verified in PSCAD/EMTDC using a realistic urban power grid in China.

Review of hybrid HVDC systems combining line communicated converter and voltage source converter

Hybrid HVDC system, which consists of the advantages of line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC), is an emerging power transmission system. This paper presents a review of four LCC-VSC hybrid HVDC topologies. The first topology is the pole-hybrid HVDC system, in which the LCC and VSC form the positive- and negative-pole respectively. The second one is the terminal-hybrid HVDC system; in this topology one terminal adopts LCC and the other terminal adopts VSC. The series converter-hybrid HVDC system is the third topology wherein each terminal is formed by LCC and VSC in series. The fourth hybrid topology under consideration is a parallel converter-hybrid HVDC system with LCC and VSC connected in parallel in each terminal. Here, the main contribution of this paper is a comprehensive analysis and comparison of the four mentioned hybrid topologies in terms of PQ operating zone, power flow reversal method, and DC fault ride-through strategy.

Coordinated frequency regulation among asynchronous AC grids with an MTDC system

With the increasing penetration level of renewable power, the power systems’ inertias are decreasing. To ensure that the frequency is above the threshold of the under frequency load shedding, one effective way is to share the spinning reserves among asynchronous AC grids through HVDC systems. In this paper, a coordinated frequency regulation scheme that enables spinning reserves sharing is proposed for such hybrid AC/DC grids. This scheme is a communication-free method that consists of the droop control, the inertia emulation control and the frequency safety control. The combined response of the three controls can increase not only the frequency nadir but also the settled frequency of the disturbed grid. In addition, the hysteresis comparators and the power injection limits are adopted in the frequency regulation scheme to reduce the coupling effect among AC grids. Thus, under small and harmless disturbance, the frequency regulation scheme will be inactive; the disturbance in strong AC grids would not affect the weak AC systems. The frequency regulation scheme coordinates well with the automatic generation control of the grids. Furthermore, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed frequency regulation scheme are verified through simulation studies.

A machine learning-based fast frequency response control for a VSC-HVDC system

An HVDC system can realize a very fast frequency response to the disturbed system under a contingency because its active power control is decoupled from the frequency deviation. However, most of existing HVDC frequency control strategies are coupled with system primary frequency control and secondary frequency control. Since the traditional system frequency control is dominated by the thermal generators, the advantage of the fast response of the HVDC system is not made fully used. The development of a frequency response estimation based on a machine learning algorithm provides another approach to improve the frequency response capability of the HVDC system. Different from other frequency deviation tracking strategies, a machine learning based HVDC frequency response control can directly increase the power flow of a HVDC system by estimation of the system generator or load lost. In this paper, a fast frequency response control using a HVDC system for a large power system disturbance based on the multivariate random forest regression (MRFR) algorithm is proposed. The simulation is carried out with an integrated power system model based on the North American interconnections. The simulation results indicate that the proposed MRFR based frequency response control can significantly improve the frequency low point during an event, while stabilizing the frequency in advance.

A Station-hybrid HVDC System Structure and Control Strategies for Cross-seam Power Transmission

Cross-seam high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission in the United States can provide an efficient and flexible bulk power delivery highway between the interconnections. Recent studies have shown significant economic benefits of cross-seam HVDC transmission systems by taking the advantages of load diversity, frequency response, renewable energy diversity, and energy arbitrage in the different interconnections. This paper introduces a station-hybrid system scheme for cross-seam interconnections. Here, the proposed station-hybrid system combines the advantages of line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC) technologies, thus enabling reliable and flexible bidirectional power flows across the interconnections. Control strategies of the station-hybrid system are investigated with a focus on power flow reversal control under normal operation conditions and grid support control under emergency conditions. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed station-hybrid system and corresponding control strategies are verified by simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC.

Operation and control of hybrid HVDC system with LCC and full-bridge MMC connected in parallel

In this study, a new kind of hybrid high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system is proposed. Each terminal of the proposed system consists of one line commutated converter (LCC) and one full-bridge modular multilevel converter (FB-MMC). The LCC and FB-MMC are connected in parallel so that they can share the same transmission line. The active–reactive power capability of the hybrid HVDC system is extended compared with the conventional LCC-HVDC system, and power reversal control without power interruption can be achieved by the coordination control of LCC and FB-MMC. Besides, the proposed hybrid HVDC system is capable of handling DC fault, because both LCC and FB-MMC have DC fault blocking capability. Moreover, the power rating of FB-MMC can be designed to low value while keeping the bulk-power transmission capability of LCC. A two-terminal bipolar hybrid HVDC system is built in PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed hybrid topology and corresponding control strategies.
