High polarization InAlGaAs/AlGaAs photocathodes grown using MBE

Strained superlattices of GaAs/GaAsP grown using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been used for more than 20 years to generate high polarization electron beams for nuclear physics. GaAs/GaAsP superlattices have several manufacturing challenges, including the thick graded layer required for the virtual GaAsP substrate, the significant difference in optimal growth temperatures for GaAs and GaAsP, and the scarcity of MBE systems using phosphorus. InAlGaAs/AlGaAs strained superlattice photocathode are an alternative structure that eliminates many of hurdles to growing GaAs/GaAsP in MBE systems. Measurements of quantum efficiency and polarization from InAlGaAs/AlGaAs will be presented. These include studies on a variety of growth parameters to optimize performance, including digital alloys, growth temperature variations, and variation in structure.

Harmonic and Subharmonic RF Injection Locking of THz Metasurface Quantum-Cascade VECSEL

Harmonic and subharmonic RF injection locking is demonstrated in a terahertz (THz) quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (QC-VECSEL). By tuning the RF injection frequency around integer multiples and submultiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, different harmonic and subharmonic orders can be excited in the same device. Modulation-dependent behavior of the device has been studied with recorded lasing spectral broadening and locking bandwidths in each case. In particular, harmonic injection locking results in the observation of harmonic spectra with bandwidths over 200 GHz. A semiclassical Maxwell-density matrix formalism has been applied to interpret QC-VECSEL dynamics, which aligns well with experimental observations.

Overview of recent experimental results on the EAST Tokamak

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (~1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β P has been significantly extended (H 98y2 > 1.3, β P ~ 4.0, β N ~ 2.4 and n e /n GW ~ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q 95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. Breakdown and plasma initiation at low toroidal electric fields (<0.3 V m -1 ) with EC pre-ionization is developed. A beneficial role on the lower hybrid wave injection to control the tungsten concentration in the NBI discharge is observed for the first time in EAST suggesting a potential way toward steady-state H-mode NBI operation.

Solid-state interphases design for high-safety, high-voltage and long-cyclability practical batteries via ethylene carbonate-free electrolytes

In this study, ethylene carbonate (EC) plays a crucial role in current electrolytes for batteries. However, EC reacts exothermically with the electrode to trigger thermal runaway and undergoes continuous oxidative decomposition at high voltages, hindering it application for next-generation batteries. Here we report a simple and effective strategy to design sulfolane(SL)-based electrolyte with reshaped anions-dominated solvation structure, forming highly stable inorganic-dominated electrode-electrolyte interphases that efficiently stabilize nickel-rich cathode and graphite anode. Compared with the conventional electrolyte, practical pouch-type LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 |Graphite cell with SL-based electrolyte significantly improve self-generated heat T 1 and thermal runaway triggering T 2 by 9.6 and 42.0 °C, respectively. More surprisingly, the pouch cell with SL-based electrolyte exhibits outstanding capacity retention of 88 % after 1000 cycles charged up to 4.5 V. The study brings new insights for unlocking advanced electrolyte candidates to build next-generation practical safer high-energy batteries.

Atomistic mechanisms for catalytic transformations of NO to NH3, N2O, and N2 by Pd

The industrial pollutant NO is a potential threat to the environment and to human health. Thus, selective catalytic reduction of NO into harmless N2, NH3, and/or N2O gas is of great interest. Among many catalysts, metal Pd has been demonstrated to be most efficient for selectivity of reducing NO to N2. However, the reduction mechanism of NO on Pd, especially the route of N−N bond formation, remains unclear, impeding the development of new, improved catalysts. We report here the elementary reaction steps in the reaction pathway of reducing NO to NH3, N2O, and N2, based on density functional theory (DFT)-based quantum mechanics calculations. We show that the formation of N2O proceeds through an Eley-Rideal (E−R) reaction pathway that couples one adsorbed NO* with one non−adsorbed NO from the solvent or gas phase. This reaction requires high NO* surface coverage, leading first to the formation of the trans-(NO)2* intermediate with a low N−N coupling barrier (0.58 eV). Notably, trans-(NO)2* will continue to react with NO in the solvent to form N2O, that has not been reported. With the consumption of NO and the formation of N2O* in the solvent, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism will dominate at this time, and N2O* will be reduced by hydrogenation at a low chemical barrier (0.42 eV) to form N2. In contrast, NH3 is completely formed by the L-H reaction, which has a higher chemical barrier (0.87 eV). Our predicted E-R reaction has not previously been reported, but it explains some existing experimental observations. In addition, we examine how catalyst activity might be improved by doping a single metal atom (M) at the NO* adsorption site to form M/Pd and show its influence on the barrier for forming the N−N bond to provide control over the product distribution.

Realization of thousand-second improved confinement plasma with Super I-mode in Tokamak EAST

Mastering nuclear fusion, which is an abundant, safe, and environmentally competitive energy, is a great challenge for humanity. Tokamak represents one of the most promising paths toward controlled fusion. Obtaining a high-performance, steady-state, and long-pulse plasma regime remains a critical issue. Recently, a big breakthrough in steady-state operation was made on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). A steady-state plasma with a world-record pulse length of 1056 s was obtained, where the density and the divertor peak heat flux were well controlled, with no core impurity accumulation, and a new high-confinement and self-organizing regime (Super I-mode = I-mode + e-ITB) was discovered and demonstrated. These achievements contribute to the integration of fusion plasma technology and physics, which is essential to operate next-step devices.

Wavelength Scaling of Widely-Tunable Terahertz Quantum-Cascade Metasurface Lasers

Terahertz (THz) external-cavity lasers based on quantum-cascade (QC) metasurfaces are emerging as widely-tunable, single-mode sources with the potential to cover the 1--6 THz range in discrete bands with milliwatt-level output power. By operating on an ultra-short cavity with a length on the order of the wavelength, the QC vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting-laser (VECSEL) architecture enables continuous, broadband tuning while producing high quality beam patterns and scalable power output. The methods and challenges for designing the metasurface at different frequencies are discussed. As the QC-VECSEL is scaled below 2 THz, the primary challenges are reduced gain from the QC active region, increased metasurface quality factor and its effect on tunable bandwidth, and larger power consumption due to a correspondingly scaled metasurface area. At frequencies above 4.5 THz, challenges arise from a reduced metasurface quality factor and the excess absorption that occurs from proximity to the Reststrahlen band. The results of four different devices — with center frequencies 1.8 THz, 2.8 THz, 3.5 THz, and 4.5 THz — are reported. Each device demonstrated at least 200 GHz of continuous single-mode tuning, with the largest being 650 GHz around 3.5 THz. The limitations of the tuning range are well modeled by a Fabry-Pérot cavity which accounts for the reflection phase of the metasurface and the effect of the metasurface quality factor on laser threshold. Lastly, the effect of different output couplers on device performance is studied, demonstrating a significant trade-off between the slope efficiency and tuning bandwidth.

Thermal Runaway of Nonflammable Localized High‐Concentration Electrolytes for Practical LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 |Graphite‐SiO Pouch Cells

Abstract With continuous improvement of batteries in energy density, enhancing their safety is becoming increasingly urgent. Herein, practical high energy density LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 |graphite‐SiO pouch cell with nonflammable localized high concentration electrolyte (LHCE) is proposed that presents unique self‐discharge characteristic before thermal runaway (TR), thus effectively reducing safety hazards. Compared with the reference electrolyte, pouch cell with nonflammable LHCE can increase self‐generated heat temperature by 4.4 °C, increase TR triggering temperature by 47.3 °C, decrease the TR highest temperature by 71.8 °C, and extend the time from self‐generated heat to triggering TR by ≈8 h. In addition, the cell with nonflammable LHCE presents superior high voltage cycle stability, attributed to the formation of robust inorganic‐rich electrode–electrolyte interphase. The strategy represents a pivotal step forward for practical high energy and high safety batteries.

High-Voltage and High-Safety Practical Lithium Batteries with Ethylene Carbonate-Free Electrolyte

Serious safety issues are impeding the widespread adoption of high-energy lithium-ion batteries for transportation electrification and large-scale grid storage. Herein, a triple-salt ethylene carbonate (EC) free electrolyte for high-safety and high-energy pouch-type LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 |graphite (NMC811|Gr) cells is reported. This EC-free electrolyte can effectively stabilize the NMC811 surface under high potential (up to 4.5 V), as well as generate a stable interphase to achieve a superior compatibility with the Gr anode. The electrolyte strategy enables significantly enhanced intrinsic safety (trigger temperature of thermal runaway (TR) increased by 67.0 °C), excellent electrochemical properties (4.2V, ≈100% after 200 cycles), and superior high voltage stability (4.5 V, 82.1% after 200 cycles). Furthermore, the work opens up a new avenue for developing novel electrolyte systems to build safer high-energy batteries for practical applications.

Multi-mode lasing in terahertz metasurface quantum-cascade VECSELs

To date, terahertz quantum-cascade vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (QC-VECSELs) have tended to oscillate in only one or two lasing modes at a time. This is due to the fact that the interaction between all of the longitudinal external cavity modes and the QC gain material is mediated through a single metasurface resonance, whose spatial overlap changes little with frequency; this suppresses spatial-hole-burning induced multi-mode operation. In this Letter, a VECSEL external cavity is demonstrated using an output coupler based upon a high-resistivity silicon etalon, which presents a periodic reflectance spectrum that is nearly matched with the external cavity mode spectrum. As the cavity length is varied, a systematic transition between a single/double-mode lasing regime and a multi-mode lasing regime is realized due to the Vernier effect. Up to nine modes lasing simultaneously with a free-spectral-range of approximately 21 GHz is demonstrated. Furthermore, this result provides a path toward the multi-mode operation necessary for eventual frequency comb operation.

In-built ultraconformal interphases enable high-safety practical lithium batteries

There is an urgent need for high-safety and high-energy lithium-ion batteries to satisfy the rapidly increasing need for energy storage. Nickel-rich layered cathodes have been at the forefront of the revolution for batteries due to their relatively high capacity and low cost. However, with the increase of nickel content, the batteries suffer from severe safety concerns, which caused by thermal runaway. Herein, we show that the ultraconformal cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) protective skin with high inorganic content dramatically enhances the safety of high-energy practical Li-ion pouch cells. We find that the robust CEI skin significantly improves the intrinsic thermal stability, mitigates the evolution of oxygen resulting from phase transition, and effectively suppresses the associated parasitic reactions between the delithiated cathodes and electrolyte. The in-situ CEI engineering strategy is simple and suitable for practical industrial manufacture, and it provides design ideas for aggressive nickel-rich cathodes towards safe and high-energy batteries.
