Computational electron–phonon superconductivity: from theoretical physics to material science

The search for room-temperature superconductors is a major challenge in modern physics. The discovery of copper-oxide superconductors in 1986 brought hope but also revealed complex mechanisms that are difficult to analyze and compute. In contrast, the traditional electron–phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism facilitated the practical realization of superconductivity (SC) in metallic hydrogen. Since 2015, the discovery of new hydrogen compounds has shown that EPC can enable room-temperature SC under high pressures, driving extensive research. Advances in computational capabilities, especially exascale computing, now allow for the exploration of millions of materials. This paper reviews newly predicted superconducting systems in 2023–2024, focusing on hydrides, boron–carbon systems, and compounds with nitrogen, carbon, and pure metals. Although many computationally predicted high-T c superconductors were not experimentally confirmed, some low-temperature superconductors were successfully synthesized. This paper provides a review of these developments and future research directions.

High-Throughput Screening for Boride Superconductors

A high-throughput screening using density functional calculations is performed to search for stable boride superconductors from the existing materials database. The workflow employs the fast frozen-phonon method as the descriptor to evaluate the superconducting properties quickly. Twenty-three stable candidates were identified during the screening. The superconductivity was obtained earlier experimentally or computationally for almost all found binary compounds. Previous studies on ternary borides are very limited. Here our extensive search among ternary systems confirmed superconductivity in known systems and found several new compounds. Among these discovered superconducting ternary borides, TaMo 2 B 2 shows the highest superconducting temperature of ∼12 K. Most predicted compounds were synthesized previously; therefore, our predictions can be examined experimentally. Our work also demonstrates that the boride systems can have diverse structural motifs that lead to superconductivity.

Prediction of ambient pressure superconductivity in cubic ternary hydrides with MH 6 octahedra

Exploring high-temperature superconducting (high-T c ) material at ambient pressure holds immense significance for physics, chemistry, and materials science. In this study, we perform a high-throughput screening of strong electron-phonon interactions in X 2 MH 6 compounds (X = Li, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ga, Rb, Sr, and In; M are 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals). These compounds have a cubic structure featuring an MH 6 octahedron motif. Our screening calculations suggest that 26 compounds exhibit dynamic stability and strong electron-phonon coupling. Among them, Mg 2 RhH 6 , Mg 2 IrH 6 , Al 2 MnH 6 , and Li 2 CuH 6 show promising energetic stability and T c of more than 50 K at ambient pressure. This study underscores promising high-T c compounds at ambient pressure with distinctive MH 6 motifs.

Prediction of superconductivity in metallic boron–carbon compounds from 0 to 100 GPa by high-throughput screening

Boron–carbon compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. In our earlier paper [Zheng et al., Phys. Rev. B, 2023, 107, 014508], we identified a new conventional superconductor of LiB 3 C at 100 GPa. Here, we aim to extend the investigation of possible superconductivity in this structural framework by replacing Li atoms with 27 different cations from periods 3, 4, and 5 under pressures ranging from 0 to 100 GPa. Using the high-throughput screening method of zone-center electron–phonon interaction, we found that ternary compounds like CaB 3 C, SrB 3 C, TiB 3 C, and VB 3 C are promising candidates for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm that they have a T c of <31 K at moderate pressures. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that fast screening of superconductivity by calculating zone-center electron–phonon coupling strength is an effective strategy for high-throughput identification of new superconductors.

Effect of doping on the phase stability and superconductivity in LaH 10

Here, we present a computational investigation into the effects of chemical doping with 15 different elements on phase stability and superconductivity in the LaH 10 structure. Most doping elements were found to induce softening of phonon modes, enhancing electron-phonon coupling and improving critical superconducting temperature while weakening dynamical stability. Unlike these dopants, Ce was found to extend the range of dynamical stability for LaH 10 by eliminating the Van Hove singularity near the Fermi level. The doped compound, La 0.75 Ce 0.25 H 10 , maintains high-temperature superconductivity. We also demonstrate that different Ce doping configurations in the LaH 10 structure have a minimal effect on energetic stability and electron-phonon coupling strength. Our findings suggest that Ce is a promising dopant to stabilize LaH 10 at lower pressures while preserving its high-temperature superconductivity.

Effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the stability of $\mathrm{LuH_3}$

A report on the near-ambient superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has stimulated great interest in this material [Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. , Nature (London) 615, 244 (2023)]. While its superconductivity is still a subject of debate, the structure of the claimed cubic phase remains uncertain. In this work, we study the effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the energetic and dynamic stability of cubic $\mathrm{LuH_3}$. Our findings indicate that both pressure and nitrogen doping can enhance the stability of the cubic $\mathrm{LuH_3}$ phase. Here, we propose a $\mathrm{Lu_8}$$\mathrm{H_{21}}$$\mathrm{Lu}$ structure that exhibits a stable phonon, reasonable thermodynamic stability at 1 GPa, and an x-ray diffraction pattern similar to the experimental data. However, we do not observe electron-phonon coupling in the zone-center phonon modes of these crystal structures.

Ground and excited states of even-numbered Hubbard ring at half-filling: comparison of the extended Gutzwiller approach with exact diagonalization

It remains a great challenge in condensed matter physics to develop a method to treat strongly correlated many-body systems with balanced accuracy and efficiency. We introduce an extended Gutzwiller (EG) method incorporating a manifold technique, which builds an effective manifold of the many-body Hilbert space, to describe the ground- and excited-state properties of strongly correlated electrons. Here we systematically apply an EG projector onto the ground and excited states of a non-interacting system. Diagonalization of the true Hamiltonian within the manifold formed by the resulting EG wavefunctions gives the approximate ground and excited states of the correlated system. To validate this technique, we implement it on even-numbered fermionic Hubbard rings at half-filling with periodic boundary conditions, and compare the results with the exact diagonalization (ED) method. The EG method is capable of generating high-quality ground and low-lying excited state wavefunctions, as evidenced by the high overlaps of wavefunctions between the EG and ED methods. Favorable comparisons are also achieved for other quantities including the total energy, the double occupancy, the total spin and the staggered magnetization. With the capability of accessing the excited states, the EG method can capture the essential features of the one-electron removal spectral function that contains contributions from states deep in the excited spectrum. Finally, we provide an outlook on the application of this method on large extended systems.

Superconductivity in the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa

Layer Li-B-C compounds have been shown to have feasible superconductivity. Using the adaptive genetic algorithm, we predict the structures of the Li-B-C system at 100 GPa. Here we identify several low-enthalpy metallic phases with stoichiometries of Li B 2 C, Li B 3 C, Li 2 BC 2 , Li 3 B 2 C 3 , Li 3 BC, and Li 5 BC. Using a fast screening method of electron-phonon interaction, we find that Li B 3 C is a promising candidate for superconductivity. The consecutive calculations using the full Brillouin zone confirm the existence of the strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in this system. The anharmonic B-C phonon modes near the zone center provide the major contribution to the EPC. The EPC constant is 1.40, and the estimated critical temperature is 22 K. In this paper, we indicate that superconductivity can also happen without a layered structural motif in the Li-B-C system. We also demonstrate an effective strategy for crystal structure prediction of superconducting materials.
