ETROC1: the first full chain precision timing prototype ASIC for CMS MTD endcap timing layer upgrade

We present the design and characterization of the first fullchain precision timing prototype ASIC, named ETL Readout Chipversion 1 (ETROC1) for the CMS MTD endcap timing layer (ETL)upgrade. The ETL utilizes Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) sensors todetect charged particles, with the goal to achieve a time resolutionof 40–50 ps per hit, and 30–40 ps per track with hits from twodetector layers. The ETROC1 is composed of a 5 × 5 pixelarray and peripheral circuits. The pixel array includes a4 × 4 active pixel array with an H-tree shaped networkdelivering clock and charge injection signals. Each active pixel iscomposed of various components, including a bump pad, a chargeinjection circuit, a pre-amplifier, a discriminator, adigital-to-analog converter, and a time-to-digital converter. Thesecomponents play essential roles as the front-end link in processingLGAD signals and measuring timing-related information. Theperipheral circuits provide clock signals and readoutfunctionalities. The size of the ETROC1 chip is7 mm× 9 mm. ETROC1 has been fabricated in a 65 nmCMOS process, and extensively tested under stimuli of chargeinjection, infrared laser, and proton beam. The time resolution ofbump-bonded ETROC1 + LGAD chipsets reaches 42–46 ps per hit in thebeam test.

Gated ring oscillator with constant dynamic power consumption

A pure digital ring oscillator with constant power consumption as oscillation frequency is adjusted. Circuit topology includes a multiplexer implemented in NAND gates and a delay element positioned after a path selection NAND gate of that multiplexer such that delay element transistors may not toggle if the non-delaying signal path is selected. Assuming a delay element oscillation frequency f and a total capacitance C, and also assuming a plurality N of delay gates each characterized by a propagation delay t1 and a capacitance C1 such that C=C1*N, the ring oscillator of the present invention is characterized by a C value that is proportional to N and an f value that is inversely proportional to N. Furthermore, each of the N delay gates as well as the input and output gates of the multiplexer are characterized by a common capacitance-to-propagation delay ratio=C1/t1.

The Regenerative Current Mirror: A Very Low Power Front-End Amplifier for Silicon Pixel Detectors

In pixelized detectors, reducing power consumption in the front end ASIC chips becomes a crucial demand. Optimization based on mature pre-amplifier schemes today is unlikely to bring sufficient improvements. A new CMOS front-end gain stage topology with very low power consumption called regenerative current mirror is developed to fulfill the demand. The circuit takes advantage of high speed performance of current amplification while operating with relatively low bias current. The regenerative current mirror uses a NMOS current mirror and a PMOS current mirror, both with nominal gain of 1, to form a loop-back topology that provides a positive feedback. An NMOS FET with an external adjustable voltage applied to it gate terminal is used to limit open loop gain of the current mirrors to be slightly lower than 1. This yields a net gain of the positive feedback loop to be much larger than 1 while operating the current mirrors under relatively low bias currents. Simulation shows that in 65 nm fabrication process, the power consumption of the gain stages suitable for silicon pixel detectors can be controlled < 10 micro-Watts per channel.

The Tiny Triplet Finder as a Versatile Track Segment Seeding Engine for Trigger Systems

In high energy physics experiment trigger systems, track segment seeding is a resource consuming function and the primary reason is the computing complexity of the segment finding process. As the Moore's Law is reaching its physical limit, reducing computing complexity should be carefully considered, rather than keep piling up silicon resources. The Tiny Triplet Finder is a scheme that reduces the computing complexity of the segment seeding. As a proof of concept, a 3D track segment seeding engine core based on the Tiny Triplet Finder has been implemented and tested in a low-cost FPGA device. The seeding engine is designed to preselect and group hits (stubs) from detector layers to feed subsequent track fitting stage. The seeding engine consists of a Hough transform space for r-z view and a Tiny Triplet Finder for r-phi view to implement 3D constraints. The seeding engine is organized as a pipeline so that each hit is processed in a single clock cycle. Taking advantage of the register-like storage block scheme which enables effectively resetting of a block RAM within a single clock cycle, clearing or refreshing the seeding engine takes only one clock cycles between two events. The Tiny Triplet Finder is also a generic coincidence finding scheme that can be used for many tasks. As a versatility demonstration, track segment finding performances for two distinctive detector geometries are tested in our seeding engine. In a collider barrel-layer geometry, the fake segment rates are studied for 3D (i.e., both r-phi and r-z views) and 2D (i.e., r-phi or r-z view only) configurations for high hit multiplicity events (>4000 hits/layer in the barrel region). Another detector geometry contains strip plane layers with timing information. The numbers of coincidences, both real or fake, with or without timing ("3D" or "2D") information at various hit multiplicities are studied.
