Integral representation of field variables for the finite element solution of viscous flow problems

The kinematics aspects of compressible and incompressible viscous flow problems are recasted into an integral representation for the velocity vector. For the incompressible flow problem, the kinetics aspect is similarly recasted into an integral representation. The result is a system of integral equations ideally suited for the finite element method. The integral representations are shown to permit the confinement of the computation field to the region of nonnegligible vorticity and dilatation which, for the incompressible flow, is identified with the viscous region. This drastic reduction in computation field results in a superior solution speed which is further improved by the use of a flowfield segmentation technique. The new approach is further shown to remove the difficulties associated with previous methods in specifying the far field and extraneous boundary conditions.

Optimum performance of hovering rotors

A theory for the optimum performance of a rotor hovering out of ground effect is developed. The performance problem is formulated using general momentum theory for an infinitely bladed rotor, and the effect of a finite number of blades is estimated. The analysis takes advantage of the fact that a simple relation exists between the radial distributions of static pressure and angular velocity in the ultimate wake, far downstream of the rotor, since the radial velocity vanishes there. This relation permits the establishment of an optimum performance criterion in terms of the ultimate wake velocities by introducing a small local perturbation of the rotational velocity and requiring the resulting ratio of thrust and power changes to be independent of the radial location of the perturbation. This analysis fully accounts for the changes in static pressure distribution and axial velocity distribution throughout the wake as the result of the local perturbation of the rotational velocity component.

Optimum performance of static propellers and rotors.

A criterion for the optimum performance of static propellers and hovering helicopter rotors is developed. Numerical results are presented for the optimum radial distributions of circulation and inflow at the propeller disk and relating the optimum power coefficient and the figure of merit to the thrust coefficient. It is shown that the present theory, which fully accounts for the effect of slipstream rotation, predicts optimum distributions of circulation and inflow that differ significantly from those based on approximate methods.
