Iodide Double Perovskites and the Limits of their Structural Stability

AbstractWhile halide double perovskites A2M(I)M(III)X6 have attracted significant attention, examples involving iodides are rare. We examine the limits of the structural stability of iodide double perovskites, presenting the synthesis and single‐crystal structures of Cs2NaScI6 and Cs2NaYI6. Bypassing the common expectation that iodides have small band gaps, these compounds display optical gaps of 3.10 eV [M(III) = Sc] and 3.65 eV [M(III) = Y]. Cs2NaScI6 is the only iodide double perovskite to exhibit a cubic crystal structure at room temperature. Density functional theory‐based electronic structure calculations help understand the role of competing Cs3M(III)2I9 (3 : 2 : 9) phases and provide possible reasons for why iodide double perovskites based around In(III), Sb(III) and Bi(III) cations have proved elusive. We confirm design rules for halide double perovskites based around concepts of the tolerance factor and the radius ratio of the smaller, trivalent ion, but also point to situations such as what is observed for Cs2NaScI6 where a double perovskite can be trapped in a metastable structure.

Exploring Spin‐Orbit Effects in a [Cu 6 Tl] + Nanocluster Featuring an Uncommon Tl−H Interaction

Reaction of [CuH(PPh 3 )] 6 with 1 equiv. of Tl(OTf) results in formation of [Cu 6 TlH 6 (PPh 3 ) 6 ][OTf] ([1]OTf]), which can be isolated in good yields. Variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, confirms the presence of a rare Tl−H orbital interaction. According to DFT, the 1 H chemical shift of the Tl-adjacent hydride ligands of [1] + includes 7.7 ppm of deshielding due to spin-orbit effects from the heavy Tl atom. In conclusion, this study provides valuable new insights into a rare class of metal hydrides, given that [1][OTf] is only the third isolable species reported to contain a Tl−H interaction.

Synthesis and characterization of the actinide tosylimido complexes [K(18-crown-6)][An(NSO 2 -$p$-tolyl)(NR 2 ) 3 ] (An = U, Th; R = SiMe 3 )

Reaction of 1 equiv of KN(H)Ts (Ts = p-MeC 6 H 4 SO 2 ) with the actinide metallacycles, [An IV (CH 2 SiMe 2 NSiMe 3 )(NR 2 ) 2 ] (An = U, Th; R = SiMe 3 ), in the presence of 18-crown-6, affords the imido complexes, [K(18-crown-6)][An IV (NTs)(NR 2 ) 3 ] (An = U, 1; Th, 2), in modest to moderate yields after work-up. Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and 1 H and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR spectroscopies. To our knowledge, they represent the first sulfonylimido complexes reported for the f elements. Finally, they are also a rare example of an isostructural set of actinide imido complexes.

Quantifying Actinide–Carbon Bond Covalency in a Uranyl–Aryl Complex Utilizing Solution 13 C NMR Spectroscopy

Reaction of [UO 2 Cl 2 (THF) 2 ] 2 with in situ generated LiFmes (FmesH = 1,3,5-(CF 3 ) 3 C 6 H 3 ) in Et 2 O resulted in the formation of the uranyl aryl complexes [Li(THF) 3 ][UO 2 (Fmes) 3 ] ([Li(THF) 3 ][1]) and [Li(Et 2 O) 3 (THF)][UO 2 (Fmes) 3 ] ([Li(Et 2 O) 3 (THF)][1]) in good to moderate yields after crystallization from hexanes and Et 2 O, respectively. Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations reveal that the C ispo resonance in [1] – exhibits a deshielding of 51 ppm from spin–orbit coupling effects originating at uranium, which indicates an appreciable covalency in the U–C bonding interaction.

Dimerization and ring-opening in bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) mediated by [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (R = SiMe 3 )

Here the addition of 2 equiv. of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) to [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (1, R = SiMe 3 ), in Et 2 O, results in formation of [cyclo-N(iPr)C(Me) 2 CH(NiPr 2 )C{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC 3 (NiPr 2 ) 2 }][U(NR 2 ) 2 (N(SiMe 3 )SiMe 2 CH 2 )(CCPh)] (2) in moderate isolated yield. Complex 2 is the result of coupling and protonation of two BAC molecules, where complex 1 contributes the required proton. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and represents a new mode of reactivity of the cyclopropenylidene fragment.

Hybrid and Inorganic Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskites A 2 WCl 6

We report hybrid and all-inorganic, vacancy-ordered double perovskites of d 2 W 4+ with the formula A 2 WCl 6 (A = CH 3 NH 3 + , Rb + , and Cs + ). These compounds, which are reddish in color, can be distinguished from structurally similar compounds obtained by hydrothermal methods on the basis of structure, spectroscopic, and magnetic properties. The latter are green and incorporate oxygen, with the actual formula Cs 2 WO x Cl 6–x and distinct optical absorption and emission behavior. Furthermore, the local-moment magnetism of the pure-red d 2 compounds reported here does not correspond to the appropriate Kotani model, suggesting as-yet undiscovered physics in these systems.

Ring-Opening in the Actinide Cyclopropyl Complexes [Cp 3 U(2,2-Diphenylcyclopropyl)] n – ( n = 0, 1)

The reaction of [Cp 3 UCl] with in situ generated 1-lithium-2,2-dipenylcyclopropane results in the formation of [Cp 3 U(2,2-diphenylcyclopropyl)] (1) in good yield. Reduction of 1 with KC 8 , in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand, results in the formation of a rare U(III) alkyl complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp 3 U(2,2-diphenylcyclopropyl)] (2). Thermolysis or photolysis of 1 for 10 d in toluene results in isomerization to the U(IV) η 1 -allyl complex, [Cp 3 U(η 1 -3,3-diphenylallyl)] (3). Moreover, photolysis of 2 in THF for 9 h at room temperature results in isomerization to the U(III) η 1 -allyl complex, [K(2,2,2-cryptand)][Cp 3 U(η 1 -3,3-diphenylallyl)] (4). Both 3 and 4 were fully characterized. Additionally, selective labeling of the C α positions of 1 and 2 with deuterium revealed that cyclopropyl ring-opening occurs via distal C–C bond cleavage via a hypothesized η 3 -allyl intermediate.

Elusive Double Perovskite Iodides: Structural, Optical, and Magnetic Properties

Halide double perovskites [A 2 M I M III X 6 ] are an important class of materials that have garnered substantial interest as non-toxic alternatives to conventional lead iodide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. While numerous studies have examined chloride and bromide double perovskites, reports of iodide double perovskites are rare, and their definitive structural characterization has not been reported. Predictive models have aided us here in the synthesis and characterization of five iodide double perovskites of general formula Cs 2 NaLnI 6 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy). Finally, the complete crystal structures, structural phase transitions, optical, photoluminescent, and magnetic properties of these compounds are reported.

YbV 3 ⁢Sb 4 and EuV 3 ⁢Sb 4 vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ zigzag chains

Here, in this work, we present Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 , two compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zigzag chains of divalent Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and heat capacity measurements. Yb⁢V 3⁢ Sb 4 is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60 mK and 300 K. Conversely, Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagneticlike order below T C =32 K with hints of modulated spin texture under low field. With Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 we demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

Ring-opening of a thorium cyclopropenyl complex generates a transient thorium-bound carbene

The reaction of [Cp 3 ThCl] with in situ generated 1-lithium-3,3-diphenylcyclopropene results in the formation of [Cp 3 Th(3,3-diphenylcyclopropenyl)] (1), in good yields. Thermolysis of 1 results in isomerization to the ring-opened product, [Cp 3 Th(3-phenyl-1H-inden-1-yl)] (3) via a hypothesized carbene intermediate. This transformation represents a new mode of reactivity of 3,3-diphenylcyclopropene with the actinides, improving our ability to use this reagent as a carbene source. Here, a combined DFT and 13 C{ 1 H} NMR analysis of 1 shows a spin–orbit induced downfield shift at C α due to participation of the 5f orbitals in the Th–C bond.

Hybrid Layered Double Perovskite Halides of Transition Metals

Hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP) halides comprise hexacoordinated 1+ and 3+ metals in the octahedral sites within a perovskite layer and organic amine cations between the layers. Here, progress on such materials has hitherto been limited to compounds containing main group 3+ ions isoelectronic with Pb II (such as Sb III and Bi III ). Furthermore, we report eight HLDP halides from the A 2 M I M III X 8 family, where A = para-phenylenediammonium (PPDA), 1,4-butanediammonium (1,4-BDA), or 1,3-propanediammonium (1,3-PDA); M I = Cu or Ag; M III = Ru or Mo; X = Cl or Br. The optical band gaps, which lie in the range 1.55 to 2.05 eV, are tunable according to the layer composition, but are largely independent of the spacer. Magnetic measurements carried out for (PPDA) 2 Ag I Ru III Cl 8 and (PPDA) 2 Ag I Mo III Cl 8 show no obvious evidence of a magnetic ordering transition. While the t 2g 3 Mo III compound displays Curie–Weiss behavior for a spin-only d 3 ion, the t 2g 5 Ru III compound displays marked deviations from the Kotani theory.

Ligand Control of Structural Diversity in Luminescent Hybrid Copper(I) Iodides

Copper(I) iodide hybrids are of interest for next-generation lighting technologies because of their efficient luminescence in the absence of rare-earth elements. Here, we report 10 structurally diverse hybrid copper(I) iodides that emit in the green–red region with quantum yields reaching 67%. The compounds display a diversity of structures including ones with one-dimensional (1D) Cu–1 chains, Cu 2 I 2 rhomboid dimers, and structures with two different arrangements of Cu 4 I 4 tetramers. The compounds with Cu 2 I 2 rhomboid dimers or Cu 4 I 4 cubane tetramers have higher photoluminescence quantum yields than those with Cu–I 1D chains and octahedral Cu 4 I 4 tetramers, owing to the optimal degree of condensation of the inorganic motifs, which suppresses nonradiative processes. Electronic structure calculations on these compounds point out the critical influence of the inorganic motif and organic ligand on the nature of the band gaps and thus the excitation characteristics. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra are presented to better understand the nature of luminescence in compounds with different inorganic motifs. Here. the emerging understanding of composition–structure–property correlations in this family provides inspiration for the rational design of hybrid phosphors for general lighting applications.
