Dielectric tensor of a weakly relativistic, nonequilibrium, and magnetized plasma

The dielectric tensor of a magnetized plasma is investigated in order to obtain analytic expressions which can be used to study wave-plasma interactions for the case of wave frequencies lying close to the cyclotron harmonics of ions or electrons. Work on this topic by Trubnikov (1959) and Shkarovsky (1966) is extended to the nonequilibrium cases, in which the particles may have drift motions, thermal anisotropy, and loss-cone-type distributions. Account is taken of these features, and a set of analytic expressions in terms of an integral is derived. The discussion presented is pertinent to the absorption and emission of radiation near the electron cyclotron harmonics.

Absorption and emission of extraordinary-mode electromagnetic waves near cyclotron frequency in nonequilibrium plasmas

An investigation is presented of two cases: (1) weakly relativistic electrons with a loss-cone type distribution, and (2) electrons with a drift velocity parallel to the ambient magnetic field. Numerical computations are given for physical parameters close to those in the polar region of the earth magnetosphere and laboratory experiments, with attention to the fast extraordinary-mode radiation whose frequency is near that of the electron cyclotron frequency. The fast extraordinary mode can escape from a strong field region to the weaker field region and may therefore be measured outside the plasma. It is found that the X mode radiation can be amplified by means of a cyclotron maser effect when the electrons have a loss-cone distribution, and it is concluded that, when the electron energy is sufficiently high, the X mode cutoff frequency may be lower than the cyclotron frequency.

Saturation and energy-conversion efficiency of auroral kilometric radiation

A quasi-linear theory is used to study the saturation level of the auroral kilometric radiation. The investigation is based on the assumption that the emission is due to a cyclotron maser instability as suggested by Wu and Lee and Lee et al. The thermodynamic bound on the radiation energy is also estimated separately. The energy-conversion efficiency of the radiation process is discussed. The results are consistent with observations.

Upstream particle spatial gradients and plasma waves

The upstream electron and ion fluxes detected by our experiment on ISEE 1/2 spacecraft undergo frequent time variations, from a few seconds to minutes. Many flux variations correlate with directional changes of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Particles propagating in the upstream region acted on by the solar wind electric field creates a quasi-stationary particle pattern in space. Evidently, the spacecraft frequently crosses the boundaries of these particle patterns. The present analysis strongly suggests that the particle time variations are usually spatial variations that have been convoluted into our data. Estimates of the thickness of the particle boundaries deduced is greater than or approximately equal to the Larmor radius (for both the upstream electron and the ion events). Plasma waves are observed in association with the upstream particle fluxes and a correlation between the amplitudes and the particle boundaries is suggested. We will theoretically show that the ion and electron density gradients across the boundary play an important role in exciting the ion acoustic-like and plasma waves.

Statistical acceleration of electrons by lower-hybrid turbulence

The statistical acceleration of electrons along an ambient magnetic field by large-amplitude lower-hybrid turbulence is discussed. Perturbations driven by a crossfield current and propagating nearly perpendicular to the applied magnetic field are considered. It is assumed that the instability saturates rapidly and that the fluctuating electric field is predominantly electrostatic. If the turbulence is characterized by a spectrum of small parallel wavenumbers, such that the parallel phase velocity of the waves is greater than the electron thermal velocity, then the turbulence can only accelerate electrons moving with large velocities along the magnetic field. The quasi-linear diffusion equation is solved using a Green's function technique, assuming a power law spectral energy density. The time evolution of an initial Maxwellian distribution is given and the time rate of change of the mean electron energy is calculated for various cases.

Plasma waves excited in the upstream region by density gradient of energetic-particle streams associated with the earth's bow shock

The present study is concerned with the excitation of plasma waves at the boundaries of the streams of energetic particles which are associated with the earth's bow shock. The analysis was motivated by observational results acquired with the ISEE spacecraft (Parks et al., 1981). It is shown theoretically that the density gradient of energetic ions can only excite ion waves, whereas that of energetic electrons can excite both ion waves and Langmuir waves. This conclusion appears to be consistent with observations.

The source mechanism of auroral kilometric radiation

A cyclotron maser mechanism for the auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) proposed by Wu and Lee (1979) and Lee et al. (1980) is reviewed with a discussion of recent developments concerning the quasilinear saturation of AKR and its energy conversion. Emphasis is on the case in which the population of the secondary electrons prevails over that of the energetic electrons. The limit of zero secondary electrons is examined, and it is found that the dispersion relation of the radiation is significantly modified.

Amplification of radiation near cyclotron frequency due to electron population inversion

Amplification of electromagnetic waves via the cyclotron maser mechanism by a population of weakly relativistic electrons is studied. The effect of a tenuous population of low energy background plasma is included. It is found that both the ordinary and extraordinary modes can be excited by the weakly relativistic electrons with a loss-cone distribution. The growth rate for the extraordinary mode is much higher than that for the ordinary mode. Velocity spread in the energetic electron distribution function may reduce the growth rate by a factor of approximately 10 from that in the monoenergetic case. The maximum growth rate for the fast extraordinary mode (X mode) occurs near the upper hybrid cutoff frequency. Numerical results are obtained and discussed.

Generation of auroral kilometric radiation and the structure of auroral acceleration region

Generation of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) in the auroral acceleration region is studied. It is shown that auroral kilometric radiation can be generated by backscattered electrons trapped in the acceleration region via a cyclotron maser process. The parallel electric field in the acceleration region is required to be distributed over 1-2 earth radii. The observed AKR frequency spectrum can be used to estimate the altitude range of the auroral acceleration region. The altitudes of the lower and upper boundaries of the acceleration region determined from the AKR data are respectively approximately 2000 and 9000 km.

Generalized lower-hybrid-drift instability

The theory of lower-hybrid-drift instability is extended to include a finite value of the component of wave vector parallel to the ambient magnetic field so that the analysis bridges the usual lower-hybrid-drift instability of flute modes and the modified-two-stream instability. The present theory also includes electromagnetic and ambient magnetic field-gradient effects. It is found that in the cold-electron limit the density and magnetic gradients can qualitatively modify the conclusion obtained in the early theory of the modified-two-stream instability. For example, even if the relative drift far exceeds the Alfven speed of the plasma, the instability may still persist. This result is in contrast to that established in the literature. When the electron temperature is finite, the problem is complicated. Numerical solutions are obtained for a number of cases.

A theory of the terrestrial kilometric radiation

During magnetospheric substorms, electrons with energies of about 1 keV are injected from the plasma-sheet region into the auroral region. A fraction of these energetic electrons can precipitate into the upper atmosphere, and the rest are reflected because of the mirror effect of the convergent geomagnetic field. It is found that these reflected electrons can result in the amplification of electromagnetic waves via a relativistic normal cyclotron resonance. This process may explain the recently discovered terrestrial kilometric radiation.

Gyroharmonic emissions induced by energetic ions in the equatorial plasmasphere

A theoretical investigation shows that MeV ions observed in the plasmasphere which have a power law distribution function possessing strong pitch angle anisotropy can give rise to emissions at frequencies near the harmonics of the ion gyrofrequencies observed in the same region. These emissions are sustained by the low-beta sub c plasma in the plasmasphere. It is found that only emissions with frequencies along the fast magnetosonic branch may occur and that these waves are essentially perpendicularly propagating. Growth is restricted to frequencies immediately below the ion gyroharmonics by the resonance condition and implies line widths of about 0.001 Omega sub alpha. Observations of ion gyroharmonic emissions with spacings of 1/16, 1/8, and 3/16 of the proton gyrofrequency may indicate the existence of energetic ion O(+), O(2+), and O(3+), respectively.

Electrostatic and electromagnetic gyroharmonic emissions due to energetic electrons in magnetospheric plasma

The paper derives the growth rates and growth lengths of the electrostatic emission for spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous energetic electrons, and numerically evaluates the growth rate and growth length spectra for several parameter sets representative of magnetospheric plasmas. In addition, the growth rates are derived for the case of electromagnetic emission modeled by the ordinary mode. The numerical results of the electromagnetic and electrostatic cases are compared with observations made by satellites in the earth's magnetosphere. It is concluded that the electrostatic gyroharmonic excitation is possible without the cold composition of plasma which is often postulated in the existing literature.

Electromagnetic and electrostatic emissions at the cusp-magnetosphere interface during substorms

Strongly peaked electrostatic emissions near 10.0 kHz and electromagnetic emissions near 0.56 kHz have been observed by the VLF wave detector on board Imp 6 on crossings from the earth's magnetosphere into the polar cusp during the occurrence of large magnetospheric substorms. The electrostatic emissions were observed to be closely confined to the cusp-magnetosphere interface. The electromagnetic emissions were of somewhat broader spatial extent and were seen on higher-latitude field lines within the cusp. Using these plasma wave observations and additional information provided by plasma, magnetometer and particle measurements made simultaneously on Imp 6, theories are constructed to explain each of the two classes of emission. The electromagnetic waves are modeled as whistlers, and the electrostatic waves as electron-cyclotron harmonics. The resulting growth rates predict power spectra similar to those observed for both emission classes. The electrostatic waves may play a significant role via enhanced diffusion in the relaxation of the sharp substorm time cusp-magnetosphere boundary to a more diffuse quiet time boundary.

Spontaneous synchrotron emission from a plasma with an energetic runaway electron tail

The emissivity of spontaneous synchrotron radiation is computed for a plasma consisting of a background thermal plasma in addition to an energetic runaway electron component. The analysis is performed for both the ordinary and extraordinary modes, for frequencies in the vicinity of the electron plasma frequency and the higher harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency, and for the case when the electron plasma frequency is approximately the same as or smaller than the cyclotron frequency. The relativistic gyroresonance with the runaway electrons is found to result in a level of spontaneous emission which, for frequencies in the neighborhood of the electron plasma frequency, is significantly enhanced over the thermal radiation.

Excitation of low frequency waves by streaming ions via anomalous cyclotron resonance

The effect of a small population of streaming ions on low-frequency waves with frequencies below the ion cyclotron frequency is analyzed for three modes of interest: Alfven waves, magnetosonic waves, and ion-cyclotron waves. The instability mechanism is the anomalous cyclotron resonance of the waves with the streaming ions. Conditions for excitation of the three types of waves are derived and expressions for the growth rates are obtained. Excitation of Alfven waves is possible even if the ratio of the densities of the streaming ions to the thermal ions is very small. For magnetosonic waves, excitation can easily occur if waves are propagating parallel or nearly parallel to the ambient magnetic field. As for ion-cyclotron waves, it is found that for the ion-whistler branch the excitation is suppressed over a broader range of wave frequencies than for the fast magnetosonic branch.

Spontaneous emission near the electron plasma frequency in a plasma with a runaway electron tail

Spontaneous emission of radiation with frequencies near the electron plasma frequency is studied for a plasma which consists of both thermal and runaway electrons. It is found that a substantial enhancement of the spontaneous radiation intensity can occur in this frequency regime via a Cherenkov resonance with the runaway electrons. Numerical analysis indicates that, for reasonable estimates of densities and energies, the plasma-frequency radiation can attain levels greater than the peak thermal emission at the second gyroharmonic.
