MHD modelling of the earth's magnetosphere

Attention is given to the shock capturing technique, nonuniform grid system, and multiple time scale problem aspects of a global MHD model of the earth's magnetosphere that uses numerical methods. Because of the fast Alfven waves near the earth, the model is more difficult to solve than problems of hydrodynamic flow past bodies. The Rusanov (1962) scheme, which is a variant of the Lax (1954) method that maintains viscosity at a minimum value except where a large one is required, is used. The magnetosphere shape obtained by these means is noted.

The effects of dipole tilt on the structure of the magnetosphere

The structure of the magnetosphere as a function of dipole tilt was studied by using a global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. We show here that the cusp current sheet in the MHD model is related to the tail current sheet and that the calculated shape and positions of the tail current sheet are consistent with observations. In addition, we discuss the difference between the MHD model and the Chapman-Ferraro type model which manifests as a function of tilt angle.

Interstellar absorption lines in the spectrum of 3C 273

Absorption lines near the rest wavelengths of the Si IV doublet (wavelengths 1393.76, 1402.77) with equivalent widths 533 and 235 mA are reported in the spectrum of QSO 3C 273. The profiles show the nature of hot gas along a high-latitude (b = 64 deg) line of sight through our entire halo. The lines have full width at half-maxima of 100 km/s, compared to an instrumental resolution of 35 km/s, are centered at zero velocity, and show no evidence for components with equivalent widths greater than 50 mA at an absolute value of v greater than 75 km/s. The absence of high peculiar velocities is consistent with published spectra of halo gas over shorter pathlengths. The implications of this result are discussed, with particular reference to the possible connection between galactic halos and QSO absorption lines, for which C IV and Si IV usually have a broader velocity range.

Shape of the magnetosphere

The shape of the magnetosphere has been studied by using a global MHD model of the magnetosphere. It is found that MHD and the Chapman-Ferraro models agree in total magnetopause current distributions, but that the MHD model presents a very different physical picture from that of the Chapman-Ferraro model. In the MHD model with B(IMF) = 0 or northward, the cusp is not exposed directly to the solar wind because the dayside magnetic field lines drape around the nightside magnetosphere. Furthermore, in the MHD model a current sheet exists above the cusp region.

Global MHD model of the earth's magnetosphere

A global MHD model of the earth's magnetosphere is defined. An introduction to numerical methods for solving the MHD equations is given with emphasis on the shock-capturing technique. Finally, results concerning the shape of the magnetosphere and the plasma flows inside the magnetosphere are presented.

The WC6 star HD76536 compact companion

The variability of HD76536 was observed by IUE. Photometric variability is confirmed by measurements with the IUE fine error sensor. Profile changes in the ultraviolet emission lines and stellar wind absorptions were studied. Data favor a binary model with a low luminosity (perhaps compact) secondary.

Bromage, G. E.

IUE ultraviolet spectral atlas

Low dispersion trailed spectra for a group of normal stars, with sample plot and flux tables, are presented. Exposure times are computed assuming 21.4 and 20.5 arcsec aperture lengths.

A comparison of the emission line properties between quasars and type 1 Seyfert galaxies

For quasars and Seyfert galaxies, the equivalent width of C IV lambda 1550 increases as the continuum luminosity of an object decreases. A reasonable interpretation is that the covering factor increases as luminosity decreases. This is consistent with the fact that the L alpha and C IV equivalent widths for Seyferts are a factor of 2 larger than those for high redshift quasars. The C IV/C III ratio, which is a sensitive indicator of the ionization parameter, is about 5 for many Seyferts while it is about 2 for high redshift quasars.

Distribution of gas in the halo of the galaxy

Results are presented from a high-resolution, ultraviolet study of interstellar gas situated away from the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy, using the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies Mkn 509 and F9 as background probes. In these directions, low-velocity, galactic gas were detected as well as two extragalactic clouds, one probably associated with the Magellanic Stream and the other with Mkn 509. These data were combined with results from other lines of sight to show that the ultraviolet species extend about 10 kpc from the plane, assuming the high-latitude gas corotates with the galactic disk. Complimentary observations of the optical Ca II and Na I species suggests that these do not extend as far - perhaps 2 to 3 kpc from the plane. Further, the exceedingly complex velocity structure found only in Magellanic Cloud directions suggests that these sight-lines are not typical of high-latitude gas in general.

Ultraviolet spectra of R Coronae Borealis stars

An analysis of the International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra of the R CrB-type variables R CrB, RY Sgr, XX Cam, and MV Sgr suggests that: (1) it should be possible to construct useful models for the atmospheres of these hydrogen deficient, carbon rich stars if present standards of metallic line blanketing are used; and (2) the observed wavelength dependence of the circumstellar extinction is primarily due to circumstellar grains.

A three dimensional MHD model of the earth's magnetosphere

The results of a global MHD calculation of the steady state solar wind interaction with a dipole magnetic field are presented. The computer code used, being much faster than previous codes, makes it possible to increase the number of grid points in the system by an order of magnitude. The resulting model qualitatively reproduces many of the observed features of the quiet time magnetosphere including the bow shock, magnetopause, and plasma sheet.

IUE observations of Seyfert galaxies

The L alpha/H beta ratio and line profiles for several galaxies are presented. The continuous energy distribution of NGC 4151 and MKN 509 are presented from the X-ray region to the infrared.

Ultraviolet light curves of U Geminorum and VW Hydri

Ultraviolet light curves were obtained for the quiescent dwarf novae U Gem and VW Hyi. The amplitude of the hump associated with the accretion hot spot is much smaller in the UV than in the visible. This implies that the bright spot temperature is roughly 12000 K if it is optically thick. The flux distribution of U Gem in quiescence cannot be fitted by model spectra of steady state, viscous accretion disks. The absolute luminosity, the flux distribution, and the far UV spectrum suggest that the primary star is visible in the far UV. The optical UV flux distribution of VW Hyi can be matched roughly by the model accretion disks.

IUE observations of hot stars - HZ43, BD +75 deg 325, NGC 6826, SS Cygni, Eta Carinae

During the commissioning phase of IUE observations were made of a selection of hot stars: the white dwarf HZ43, the hot subdwarf BD +75 deg 325, the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC 6826, the dwarf nova SS Cygni, and the peculiar object Eta Carinae. The observations were made in the low dispersion mode and the data have been reduced using a preliminary calibration. The results are presented and discussed for each object.
