The Orbiting Standards Platform

The Orbiting Standards Platform (OSP) is a combination satellite signal source and field strength meter which will make possible highly accurate, truly far-field measurements of large aperture antenna gain, pattern, sidelobes, and polarization as well as system G/T and EIRP. These measurements may be used to initially characterize earth station equipment and for the subsequent monitoring of its performance. This paper describes a technical-feasibility study of the OSP.

An Orbiting Standards Platform for communication satellite system RF measurements

The Orbiting Standards Platform (OSP) is a proposed satellite dedicated to performing RF measurements on space communications systems. It would consist of a quasi-geostationary spacecraft containing an ensemble of calibrated RF sources and field strength meters operating in several microwave bands, and would be capable of accurately and conveniently measuring critical earth station and satellite RF performance parameters, such as EIRP, gain, figure of merit (G/T), crosspolarization, beamwidth, and sidelobe levels. The feasibility and utility of the OSP concept has been under joint study by NASA, NBS, Comsat and NTIA. A survey of potential OSP users was conducted by NTIA as part of this effort. The response to this survey, along with certain trends in satellite communications system design, indicates a growing need for such a measurement service.

Shuttle communication experiments

The article reviews concepts and experiments to be tested on Shuttle/Spacelab for high-data-rate multiple-terminal and multiple-user communications (deep space and space-ground) and navigation, emphasizing synergistic payloads in which instrumentation and measurements are shared by onboard equipment and experiments. The millimeter-wavelength large antenna, the adaptive multibeam antenna, the electromagnetic (mm wavelength range) environment experiment, and bandwidth compressive modulation, an open-envelope TWT, and the microwave multi-application payload concept are described in detail in terms of concept, components, and performance parameters to be tested.
