SCILLA Scanning Electrical Mobility Spectrometer (SEMS) airborne data

The Scanning Electrical Mobility Spectrometer (SEMS) provides measurements of bulk aerosol size distributions, which are crucial for studying aerosol-cloud interactions. The instrument sampled through two different inlets: an isokinetic inlet and a counter-flow virtual impactor (CVI) inlet. Data were collected to help improve climate and earth systems models, characterize atmospheric conditions, and validate satellite observations and climate simulations.

SCILLA Secondary Aerosol Volume Concentration Airborne Data

This data set contains secondary aerosol volume concentration in cubic micrometers per cubic centimeter (um^3/cm^3). The aerosol was generated in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) and its volume concentration measured with a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). Both components were designed and built at the University of California Riverside. Ambient particles were removed with a Teflon filter upstream of the OFR and then pure ammonium sulfate particles were added to create a stable aerosol surface area on which low-volatility oxidation products condense. High concentrations of hydroxyl radical (OH) formed inside the OFR accelerate the oxidative chemistry that would typically occur over a period of several days in the atmosphere, resulting in the production of secondary aerosol from precursor gases present in the ambient air. Concentrations of added ozone and water vapor were controlled to produce the desired and approximately constant level of photochemical aging. The reactor temperature was controlled, while the pressure was not, and was always slightly lower than that of the sampled outside air. Sampled air was pulled from above the Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Twin Otter aircraft through a rear-facing, ¼” OD PFA Teflon tube. The sample stream was split between the OFR and several gas analyzers (NOx, CO, O3, and H2O). Though not contained in these files, data from an aerosol mass spectrometer intermittently operated downstream of the OFR are also available.

SCILLA nitrogen oxide (NOx) airborne data

Nitrogen oxides mixing ratios in ppb are measured using a Teledyne API Model T200UP. The analyzer uses chemiluminescence to determine NO concentration. Alternating measurement of the concentrations of total NOx (NO + NO2) and just NO are made by directing the sample through a blue light converter that photolyzes NO2 to NO and bypassing it, respectively, with the NO2 concentration calculated as the difference between the two. Sampled air was pulled from above the Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Twin Otter aircraft through a rear-facing, ¼” OD PFA Teflon tube. The sample stream was split between several other gas analyzers (CO, O3, and H2O) and an oxidation flow reactor. The NO, NO2, and NOx mixing ratios were recorded once per minute.

SCILLA ozone (O3) airborne data

Ozone mixing ratios in ppb are measured using a Teledyne API Model T400U. The analyzer uses UV absorption at 254 nm to determine O3 concentration. Sampled air was pulled from above the Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Twin Otter aircraft through a rear-facing, ¼” OD PFA Teflon tube. The sample stream was split between several other gas analyzers (CO, NOx, and H2O) and an oxidation flow reactor. The data were recorded at 0.1 Hz.

SCILLA mini-Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (mAMS) airborne data

Measurements of non-refractory, sub-micron aerosol composition, namely organic, sulfate, nitrate, chloride, and ammonium aerosols, by a mini- aerosol mass spectrometer (mAMS, Aerodyne Research, Inc.) are reported. The instrument sampled ambient air through 3 different inlets: unperturbed ambient air, a Counter-flow Virtual Impactor (CVI), and an oxidation flow reactor (OFR). Users should consult the Sampling Key for proper interpretation of the data.
