OR22-Neuromorphic Rad Detector-PD3Ra (Final Report)

In unattended monitoring scenarios, automated radiation detection algorithms must be able to detect low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) anomalies in a potentially dynamic and noisy background and report these anomalies in a timely fashion. Dynamic and noisy backgrounds complicate the use of simple gross-counting algorithms because they can lead to either high false positive rates or low sensitivity. Algorithms that use the entire spectrum have been the most successful in this area; notable examples are the NSCRAD algorithm developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and recently the nonnegative matrix factorization approach developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). These approaches use either spectral regions of interest or spectral decomposition to detect threat isotopes in the background.

Battery Electrolyte Design for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Platforms

Here, the development of robust and high-performance battery systems is crucial for the advancement of Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles for urban air mobility. This study evaluates the performance of different lithium-ion battery chemistries under Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) load profiles. The actual flight data coupled with physical models is used to create discharge profiles for testing on developed lithium-ion cells for eVTOLs. The performance of a standard liquid electrolyte (1.2 M LiPF 6 in EC:EMC), labeled Gen-2, is benchmarked and compared with a fast-charging electrolyte (1.2 M LiFSI in EC:EMC), labeled XFC. Cell analysis involves the use of various techniques, such as impedance spectroscopy, polarization curves, and capacity retention measurements. Capacity retention is stable for both systems over 500 cycles, but unique discharge capacity trends are observed for different mission segments. During the initial takeoff hover stages, Gen-2 electrolytes experience substantial voltage fade, while XFC electrolytes maintain consistent behavior. In general, the Gen-2 electrolyte demonstrated lower discharge overpotentials and higher decay during cycling compared to the XFC electrolyte. This work highlights the complexity of eVTOL battery behavior and provides insights into battery system design, contributing to the advancement of battery energy storage solutions for urban air mobility.

An FPGA-Based Neuromorphic Processor with All-to-All Connectivity

Neuromorphic computing is a promising paradigm for future energy-efficient computing. At present, however, it is in its nascent stages—most hardware implementations are research-grade, commercial products are not available, and the software tools are not production-ready. The lack of hardware and software tools makes neuromorphic computing inaccessible to researchers around the globe. To this extent, we intend to build a low-cost, open-source, FPGA-based digital neuromorphic processor that can be used by researchers worldwide. In this paper, we present a preliminary implementation of the processor on a Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA using SystemVerilog. Our implementation supports the integrate-and-fire neuron with two parameters each for neurons and synapses. It also features all-to-all connectivity among neurons on the hardware. We test our implementation on four cases: bars and stripes datasets, shortest path algorithm, logic gates, and 8-3 encoder. We also perform a scalability study to understand the resource utilization of the FPGA as the number of all-to-all connected neurons increases. With our implementation, the Artix- 7 supports 65 neurons with all-to-all connectivity. Moreover, all the test cases mentioned above achieve 100% accuracy.

Results from the First Field Test of a Ruggedized Continuous Holdup Monitor

A first field test of the inexpensive and ruggedized online holdup monitor under development at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was performed in September of 2023 with highly successful results. ORNL staff collaborated with personnel at the National Fuel Services (NFS) to place two battery-powered detector units at the facility, one on a fuel processing line and the other on a HEPA filter. Both units collected gamma-ray counts per second, temperature, humidity, and battery power data every 5 s seconds over the course of 19 days. Analyzed results from the measurements were discussed with NFS personnel after the units were removed. Vendor feedback on the units was overwhelmingly positive with an expressed desire to deploy finished units at the facility and an open invitation for testing future prototypes.
