Ferromagnetism and structural phase transition in rhombohedral PrI r 3

The synthesis, structural, magnetic, thermal, and transport properties are reported for polycrystalline PrI⁢r 3 . At room temperature PrI⁢r 3 displays the rhombohedral space group R–3m and a PuNi 3 -type structure. At around 70 K a phase transition to a monoclinic C⁢2/m structure is observed and continued cooling reveals temperature independent behavior of the unit cell volume. Further, PrI⁢r 3 undergoes a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition with T c =7.5K. The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law with a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and an effective moment that is close to the theoretical effective moment for a free P⁢r +3 ion. Finally, the structural transition introduces further complexity into the behavior of PuNi 3 -type materials and highlights the importance of temperature-dependent structural studies to complement physical property measurements in intermetallic compounds.

MgPd 2 Sb : A Mg-based Heusler-type superconductor

Here, we report the synthesis and physical properties of a full Heusler compound, MgPd 2 Sb, which we found to show superconductivity below T c = 2.2 K . MgPd 2 Sb was obtained by a two-step solid-state reaction method and its purity and cubic crystal structure [Fm-3m, a = 6.4523(1) Å ] were confirmed by powder x-ray diffraction. Normal and superconducting states were studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The results show that MgPd 2 Sb is a type-II, weak coupling superconductor ( λ e-p = 0.53 ). The observed pressure dependence of T c (ΔT c /p ≈ -0.23 K / GPa ) is one of the strongest reported for a superconducting Heusler compound. The electronic structure, phonons, and electron-phonon coupling in MgPd 2 Sb were theoretically investigated. The obtained results are in agreement with the experiment, confirming the electron-phonon coupling mechanism of superconductivity. We compare the superconducting parameters to those of all reported Heusler-type superconductors.

Spinon excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional $S = \frac{1}{2}$ chain compound Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is ideal for realizing one of the simplest gapless quantum spin liquids (QSLs), supporting a many-body ground state whose elementary excitations are fractional fermionic excitations called spinons. Here we report the discovery of such a one-dimensional (1D) QSL in Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 . Compared to previously reported $S = \frac{1}{2}$ 1D chains, this material possesses a wider temperature range over which the QSL state is stabilized. In this work, we identify spinon excitations extending at $\textit{T}$ > 0.8 K, with a large $\textit{T}$-linear contribution to the specific heat, γ = 31.5(2)mJ mol –1 K –2 , which contribute itinerantly to thermal transport up to temperatures as high as $\textit{T}$ = 35 K. At $\textit{T}$ = 0.7 K , we find a second-order phase transition that is unchanged by a $μ_0H = 5T$ magnetic field. Cs 4 CuSb 2 Cl 12 reveals new phenomenology deep in the 1D QSL regime, supporting a gapped QSL phase over a wide temperature range compared to many other experimental realizations.
