Venus - Microwave detection of carbon monoxide

The 115-gigahertz microwave line of carbon monoxide has been detected in the spectrum of Venus. The measurement proves that the carbon monoxide mixing ratio increases above an altitude of 85 kilometers in the Venus stratosphere and provides quantitative information on carbon monoxide in the altitude region from 80 to 110 kilometers. This altitude region is well above that which has been previously sensed.

Time variations in the OH microwave and infrared emission from late-type stars

The results of a study initiated in the fall of 1969 are reported. The study was concerned with the monthly measurement of the microwave spectra at 1612 MHz and the broadband infrared fluxes at six wavelengths for 10 OH/IR sources. The observations represent the first conclusive evidence for well-defined, periodic variations in the flux from any type of OH microwave emitter. Following the discovery of OH/IR stars that emit mainly at 1665 and/or 1667 MHz the program was expanded to include four of these sources.

Accurate positions of OH sources

The Owens Valley interferometer was used at 1665, 1667, and 1720 MHz to measure the positions of eleven OH emission sources. The 1720-MHz OH source in W3 (continuum) was found to be 40 seconds away from the H2O maser source and was found not to coincide with any radio or infrared feature. Two OH emission sources were found in NGC 7538; one is identifiable with a very compact radio infrared source, while the other, 80 seconds to the south, is as yet unidentified. The OH sources 0739-14 and Sharpless 269 also coincide with infrared sources.
