A j eff = 1/2 Kitaev material on the triangular lattice: the case of NaRuO 2

Motivated by recent reports of a quantum-disordered ground state in the triangular lattice compound NaRuO 2 , we derive a j eff = 1/2 magnetic model for this system by means of first-principles calculations. The pseudospin Hamiltonian is dominated by bond-dependent off-diagonal Γ interactions, complemented by a ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange and a notably antiferromagnetic Kitaev term. In addition to bilinear interactions, we find a sizable four-spin ring exchange contribution with a strongly anisotropic character, which has been so far overlooked when modeling Kitaev materials. The analysis of the magnetic model, based on the minimization of the classical energy and exact diagonalization of the quantum Hamiltonian, points toward the existence of a rather robust easy-plane ferromagnetic order, which cannot be easily destabilized by physically relevant perturbations.

Dark field X-ray microscopy below liquid-helium temperature: The case of NaMnO 2

Dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) is an experimental technique employed to investigate material properties by probing their ‘mesoscale,’ or microscale structures, in a bulk-sensitive manner using hard X-rays at synchrotron radiation sources. However, challenges remain when it comes to applications of this technique to examine low-temperature phenomena in quantum materials, which exhibit complex phase transitions at cryogenic temperatures. One such material is NaMnO 2 , which hosts an antiferromagnetic transition at 45 K that is suspected to coincide with local structural transitions from its majority monoclinic phase to nanoscale triclinic domains. Direct observation of local heterogeneities and this effect at low temperatures in NaMnO 2 is an important step in understanding this material and serves as an ideal candidate study for expanding the DFXM experimental design space. This paper details a foundational high-resolution DFXM study, down to liquid-helium temperature and below, conducted to explore phase transitions in NaMnO 2 . In conclusion, the outlined experiment ushers in the evaluation of other functional materials at low temperatures using this technique.

High Resolution Polar Kerr Effect Studies of CsV 3 Sb 5 : Tests for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking below the Charge-Order Transition

We report high resolution polar Kerr effect measurements on CsV 3 Sb 5 single crystals in search for signatures of spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking below the charge order transition at T * = 94 K. Utilizing two different versions of zero-area loop Sagnac interferometers operating at 1550 nm wavelength, each with the fundamental attribute that without a time reversal symmetry breaking sample at its path, the interferometer is perfectly reciprocal, we find no observable Kerr effect to within the noise floor limit of the apparatus at 30 nanoradians. Simultaneous coherent reflection ratio measurements confirm the sharpness of the charge order transition in the same optical volume as the Kerr measurements. At finite magnetic field we observe a sharp onset of a diamagnetic shift in the Kerr signal at T *, which persists down to the lowest temperature without change in trend. Since 1550 nm is an energy that was shown to capture all features of the optical properties of the material that interact with the charge order transition, we are led to conclude that it is highly unlikely that time reversal symmetry is broken in the charge ordered state in CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Electrochemical Control of Magnetism on the Breathing Kagome Network of Li x ScMo 3 O 8

Controlling properties within a given functional inorganic material structure type is often accomplished through tuning the electronic occupation, which is in turn dictated by the elemental composition determined at the time of material preparation. We employ electrochemical control of the lithium content, with associated electronic occupancy control, to vary the magnetic properties of a material where a kagome-derived network of Mo 3 triangles carry the spin. In this case, Li is electrochemically inserted into LiScMo 3 O 8 , a layered compound containing a breathing Mo kagome network. Up to two additional Li can be inserted into LiScMo 3 O 8 , transforming it into Li 3 ScMo 3 O 8 . Li 2 ScMo 3 O 8 prepared by electrochemical lithiation is compared to the quantum spin liquid candidate compound Li 2 ScMo 3 O 8 prepared through high-temperature solid-state methods, which has a slightly different structural stacking sequence but a similar kagome-derived network. Magnetic measurements are supported by first-principles calculations, showing that electrons remain localized on the Mo clusters throughout the doping series. As x is varied in Li x ScMo 3 O 8 , the measurements and calculations reveal the evolution from a diamagnetic band insulator at x = 1 to a geometrically frustrated magnet at x = 2, back to a diamagnetic insulator at x = 3. These results indicate a likelihood of strong coupling between the degree of Li disorder and charge/magnetic ordering over the Mo 3 clusters.

YbV 3 ⁢Sb 4 and EuV 3 ⁢Sb 4 vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ zigzag chains

Here, in this work, we present Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 , two compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zigzag chains of divalent Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and heat capacity measurements. Yb⁢V 3⁢ Sb 4 is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60 mK and 300 K. Conversely, Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagneticlike order below T C =32 K with hints of modulated spin texture under low field. With Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 we demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

Flat band separation and robust spin Berry curvature in bilayer kagome metals

Kagome materials have emerged as a setting for emergent electronic phenomena that encompass different aspects of symmetry and topology. It is debated whether the XV 6 Sn 6 kagome family (where X is a rare-earth element), a recently discovered family of bilayer kagome metals, hosts a topologically non-trivial ground state resulting from the opening of spin–orbit coupling gaps. These states would carry a finite spin Berry curvature, and topological surface states. Here we investigate the spin and electronic structure of the XV 6 Sn 6 kagome family. We obtain evidence for a finite spin Berry curvature contribution at the centre of the Brillouin zone, where the nearly flat band detaches from the dispersing Dirac band because of spin–orbit coupling. In addition, the spin Berry curvature is further investigated in the charge density wave regime of ScV 6 Sn 6 and it is found to be robust against the onset of the temperature-driven ordered phase. Utilizing the sensitivity of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to the spin and orbital angular momentum, our work unveils the spin Berry curvature of topological kagome metals and helps to define its spectroscopic fingerprint.

Quantum disordered ground state in the triangular-lattice magnet NaRuO 2

It has long been hoped that spin liquid states might be observed in materials that realize the triangular lattice Hubbard model. However, weak spin-orbit coupling and other small perturbations often induce conventional spin freezing or magnetic ordering. Sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling, however, can renormalize the electronic wave function and induce anisotropic exchange interactions that promote magnetic frustration. Here we show that the cooperative interplay of spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects in the triangular lattice magnet NaRuO 2 produces an inherently fluctuating magnetic ground state. Despite the presence of a charge gap, we find that low-temperature spin excitations generate a metal-like term in the specific heat and a continuum of excitations in neutron scattering, reminiscent of spin liquid states previously found in triangular lattice organic magnets. Further cooling produces a crossover into a different, highly disordered, spin state whose dynamic spin autocorrelation function reflects persistent fluctuations. Furthermore, these findings establish NaRuO 2 as a cousin to organic, Heisenberg spin liquid compounds with a low-temperature crossover in quantum disorder.

Inducing skyrmion flop transitions in Co 8 Zn 8 Mn 4 at room temperature

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that manifest in certain noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets under the right conditions of temperature and field. In thin-film skyrmion hosts, demagnetization effects combined with geometric confinement can result in two distinct types of spin textures: those with their axis of symmetry in the plane of the film (IP) and those with their axis pointing out-of-plane (OOP). Here we present Lorentz transmission electron microscopy evidence in conjunction with numerical modeling showing a flop transition between IP and OOP skyrmions in Co 8 ⁢Zn 8 ⁢Mn 4 at room temperature. Further, we show that this skyrmion flop transition is controllable via the angle of the external field relative to the film normal and we illustrate how this transition depends on thickness. Finally, we propose a skyrmion-writing device that utilizes the details of this transition.

Ferroelectricity and superconductivity in strained Eu x Sr 1 – x TiO 3 films

The superconducting transition of SrTiO 3 can be influenced by tuning its ferroelectric transition, but the underlying reasons remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate compressively strained, Sm-doped films of Eu x Sr 1-x TiO 3 that were grown by molecular beam epitaxy to determine the effect of alloying with Eu on both superconductivity and ferroelectricity, both of which are present in strained SrTiO 3 films. Remarkably, superconductivity survives up to x = 0.14. Films at the lowest alloy concentration studied here, x = 0.09, exhibit no suppression of their superconducting transition temperature, but a strong reduction of the upper critical field (H c2 ), compared to non-alloyed, strained SrTiO 3 films. In addition, these films lack the sharp ferroelectric transition that appears in films without Eu in second harmonic generation measurements. Here, we postulate that Eu-alloying causes a crossover from a globally ordered ferroelectric state to one with only short-range polar order. We discuss the connection between the loss of global polar order and the change in the superconducting properties.

Order-disorder charge density wave instability in the kagome metal (Cs,Rb)V 3 Sb 5

The origin of the charge density wave phases in the kagome metal compound AV 3 Sb 5 is still under great scrutiny. Here, we combine diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify a 3-dimensional precursor of the charge order at the L point that condenses into a CDW through a first order phase transition. The quasi-elastic critical scattering indicates that the dominant contribution to the diffuse precursor is the elastic central peak without phonon softening. However, the inelastic spectra show a small broadening of the Einstein-type phonon mode on approaching T CDW . Our results point to the situation where the Fermi surface instability at the L point is of order-disorder type with critical growth of quasi-static domains. The experimental data indicate that the CDW consists on an alternating Star of David and trihexagonal distortions and its dynamics goes beyond the classical weak-coupling scenario and is discussed within strong-electron phonon coupling and non-adiabatic models.
