The star system: A production engineering approach to STS

A fundamental change to the way Space Transportation System flight preparation is done is documented. It involves (1) systematic restructuring the Space Transportation System flight preparation task, to minimize its R&D content; (2) development of the Space Transportation Automated Reconfiguration (STAR) system to structure and support the remaining work flow. STAR is an integrated software system providing automation and quality control mechanisms necessary to create a production-like process. This approach was implemented using tools and methodology developed by IBM under NASA contract, to produce payload flight data requirements. It offers increased product quality, reduced cost per flight, and greater responsiveness to change.

Hydrogen suppression of 'ductile' processes

Experimental results are reported for torsional fatigue specimens of high-strength steel 4370 and tensile bars of mild steel A-106 which present evidence of a hydrogen-induced strain-aided hardening effect. These results are consistent with the postulate that hydrogen suppresses ductile processes required for crack initiation at large plastic strains.

Void-free bends in laminated structures

Layup technique involving repositioning of filler plies and redesigning of bleeder pressure pad reduces wrinkles, voids, pores, and other defects at sharp bends in laminated materials.

Application of mobile digital communications in law enforcement, an introductory planning guide

A set of planning guidelines for the application of digital communications techniques to law enforcement use is presented. Some essential characteristics of digital techniques and their applications are outlined, as are some principles of system analysis, evaluation, and planning. Requirements analysis, system concept design, implementation planning, and performance and cost modeling are described and demonstrated with respect to this application problem. Information on law enforcement digital communications systems and equipment and a list of vendor sources are given in appendices.

California four cities program, 1971 - 1973

A pilot project in aerospace-to-urban technology application is reported. Companies assigned senior engineering professionals to serve as Science and Technology Advisors to participating city governments. Technical support was provided by the companies and JPL. The cities, Anaheim, Fresno, Pasadena, and San Hose, California, provided the working environment and general service support. Each city/company team developed and carried out one or more technical or management pilot projects together with a number of less formalized technology efforts and studies. An account and evaluation is provided of the initial two-year phase of the program.

Mariner Venus Mercury, 1973

The Mariner Venus Mercury 1973 unmanned mission is discussed, which is designed to conduct a close flyby investigation of the planet Mercury after using the gravity-turn technique in a Venus flyby. Its scientific purposes include photographic, thermal, and spectral surveys, radio occulation, and charged particle/magnetic measurements at each planet, observation of solar-system fields and particles from 1.0 a.u. down to 0.4 a.u., and comparative planetary surveys between the Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Mercury. It is also intended to observe Kohoutek's comet. The trajectory permits establishment of a solar orbit in phase with Mercury's, permitting repeated encounters with that planet.

A digital-to-analog conversion circuit using third-order polynomial interpolation

Zero- and third-order digital-to-analog conversion techniques are described, and the theoretical error performances are compared. The design equations and procedures for constructing a third-order digital-to-analog converter by using analog design elements are presented. Both a zero- and a third-order digital-to-analog converter were built, and the performances are compared with various signal inputs.

High current compensation network for dc logarithmic amplifiers

Circuit voltage output is reduced by voltage equivalent to ampere resistance drop of nonlogarithmic resistances of practical diodes; therefore, output is same as circuit using ideal diode. Circuit applies to meter and electronic recorder movements, and improves performance of radiation detectors and several microbiological monitoring devices

Servo calorimeter measures material heating rate

Servo calorimeter accurately measures the heating rate of a material exposed to nuclear radiation independently of the specific heat thermal conductivity of the material. The electrical power used is a direct measure of the nuclear heating rate.
