Polarization observables in double neutral pion photoproduction

Abstract Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction "Equation missing"<#comment/>are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol ($$\hbox {C}_4\hbox {H}_9$$ C 4 H 9 OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Linearly polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. The data cover the photon energy range from "Equation missing"<#comment/>to "Equation missing"<#comment/>and nearly the complete angular range. The results have been included in the BnGa partial wave analysis. Experimental results and the fit agree very well. Observed systematic differences in the branching ratios for decays of "Equation missing"<#comment/>and$${\varDelta ^*}$$ Δ ∗ resonances are attributed to the internal structure of these excited nucleon states. Resonances which can be assigned to SU(6)$$\times $$ × O(3) two-oscillator configurations show larger branching ratios to intermediate states with non-zero intrinsic orbital angular momenta than resonances assigned to one-oscillator configurations.

Experimental Verification of the Theoretical Prediction of the Phase Structure of a Ni-Al-Ti-Cr-Cu Alloy

The Bozzolo-Ferrante-Smith (BFS) method for alloys was applied to the study of NiAl-based materials to assess the effect of alloying additions on structure. Ternary, quaternary and even pentalloys based on NiAl with additions of Ti, Cr and Cu were studied and experimental verification of the theoretical predictions including the phase structure of a Ni-Al-Ti-Cr-Cu alloy is presented. Two approaches were used, Monte Carlo simulations to determine low energy structures, and analytical calculations of the energy of high symmetry configurations which give physical insight into preferred structures. The energetics for site occupancy in ternary and quaternary systems were calculated leading to an indirect determination of solubility limits at 0 K. Precipitate formation with information concerning structure and lattice parameter were also 'observed' computationally and the general characteristics of a Ni-Al-Ti-Cr-Cu alloy were correctly predicted. The results indicate that the BFS method for alloys can be a useful tool for alloy design and can be used to complement experimental alloy design programs.

The United Kingdom SATMaP program

Data from test tapes from the United States (specifically the August Arkansas scene) and the first tape of the UK test site which came from ESRIN are analyzed. Methods for estimating spatial resolution are discussed and some preliminary results are included. The characteristics of the ESRIN data are examined and the utility of the various spectral bands of the thematic mapper for land cover mapping are outlined.

Simulated hail impact testing of photovoltaic solar panels

Techniques used to simulate and study the effect of hail on photovoltaic solar panels are described. Simulated hail stones (frozen ice spheres projected at terminal velocity) or steel balls were applied by air guns, gravity drop, or static loading. Tests with simulated hail and steel balls yielded different results. The impact strength of 10 commercially available flat-plate photovoltaic modules was tested. It was found that none of the six panel designs incorporating clear potting silicone material as the outermost layer remained undamaged by 1-in. simulated hailstones, while a photovoltaic module equipped with a 0.188-in.-thick acrylic cover sheet would be able to withstand the impact of a 2-in.-diameter hailstone.

Dynamic modeling of spacecraft in a collisionless plasma

A new computational model is described which can simulate the charging of complex geometrical objects in three dimensions. Two sample calculations are presented. In the first problem, the capacitance to infinity of a complex object similar to a satellite with solar array paddles is calculated. The second problem concerns the dynamical charging of a conducting cube partially covered with a thin dielectric film. In this calculation, the photoemission results in differential charging of the object.

Modular disposable can (MODCAN) crash cushion: A concept investigation

A conceptual design investigation of an improved highway crash cushion system is presented. The system is referred to as a modular disposable can (MODCAN) crash system. It is composed of a modular arrangement of disposable metal beverage cans configured to serve as an effective highway impact attenuation system. Experimental data, design considerations, and engineering calculations supporting the design development are presented. Design performance is compared to that of a conventional steel drum system. It is shown that the MODCAN concepts offers the potential for smoother and safer occupant deceleration for a larger class of vehicle impact weights than the steel drum device.

Survey of projected growth and problems facing air transportation, 1975 - 1985

Results are presented of a survey conducted to determine the current opinion of people working in air transportation demand forecasting on the future of air transportation over the next ten years. In particular, the survey included questions on future demand growth, load factor, fuel prices, introduction date for the next new aircraft, the priorities of problems facing air transportation, and the probability of a substantial change in air transportation regulation. The survey participants included: airlines, manufacturers, universities, government agencies, and other organizations (financial institutions, private research companies, etc.). The results are shown for the average responses within the organization represented as well as the overall averages.
