The MSFC UNIVAC 1108 EXEC 8 simulation model

A model is presented which simulates the MSFC Univac 1108 multiprocessor system. The hardware/operating system is described to enable a good statistical measurement of the system behavior. The performance of the 1108 is evaluated by performing twenty-four different experiments designed to locate system bottlenecks and also to test the sensitivity of system throughput with respect to perturbation of the various Exec 8 scheduling algorithms. The model is implemented in the general purpose system simulation language and the techniques described can be used to assist in the design, development, and evaluation of multiprocessor systems.

Computer system simulation and analysis

A simulation model has been developed as a tool for studying different computer system configurations. The model simulates a computer system in terms of the number and speed of hardware subsystems and the runs processed by the system in terms of equivalent adds for computation and data bits transferred for I/O. The model was written in the GPSS simulation language.

A system reliability analysis for stand-by spares with non-zero unpowered failure rates

Equations which define the reliability of n-fold parallel systems with stand-by spares, and triply redundant, majority-voting systems with stand-by spares have been derived. The stand-by spares have been assumed to have a non-zero failure rate while in the stand-by mode. A Monte Carlo system simulation has been generated and the results compared to the theoretical reliability predictions. A comparison of these two stand-by configurations is also presented for three through six total units.

An on-line system for hand-printed input

The capability of graphic input/output systems is described. Topics considered are a character recognizer and dictionary building program, an initial flow chart element input program, and a system entitled The Assistant Mathematician, which uses ordinary mathematics to specify numeric computation. All three parts are necessary to allow a user to carry on a mathematical dialogue with the computer in the language and notation of his discipline or problem domain.
