Graded junction termination extensions for electronic devices

A graded junction termination extension in a silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor device and method of its fabrication using ion implementation techniques is provided for high power devices. The properties of silicon carbide (SiC) make this wide band gap semiconductor a promising material for high power devices. This potential is demonstrated in various devices such as p-n diodes, Schottky diodes, bipolar junction transistors, thyristors, etc. These devices require adequate and affordable termination techniques to reduce leakage current and increase breakdown voltage in order to maximize power handling capabilities. The graded junction termination extension disclosed is effective, self-aligned, and simplifies the implementation process.

Development and Preliminary Evaluation of Aryl Ester Boundary Additives for Perfluoropolyethers

A series of additives were developed for evaluation as boundary lubrication enhancers for perfluoropolyethers. They are composed of a hydrocarbon aryl component (for lubrication improvement) and a fluorinated side chain (for solubility enhancement). The two moieties are joined by an ester linkage. Five boundary additives were evaluated in a perfluoropolyether basestock (Fomblin Z25) using a specially designed four-ball apparatus. Additives were evaluated at a one wt percent concentration. Conditions included: an atmosphere of dry air at atmospheric pressure, a 200N load, a speed of 100 rpm, room temperature, and 440C stainless steel specimens. Two monoesters, 2,4,6-trimethyl E2 and H5PDFO yielded wear rate reductions of approximately 60 and 35 percent, respectively. One diester, H4(E2)(sub 2), had no activity, while two other diesters (a diester of bisphenol A and H4(E4)(sub 2)) were pro-wear.

Sputter process investigation: Material and environment interaction processes investigation

The multilayer Ellipsometry program has been developed with which the thickness and the optical properties of top layer can be determined with the additional information obtained from other measurement such as the optical constant of the middle layer film. Once the proper parameters are input into the program, the multilayer Ellipsometry program which was developed by H. Kim and Dr. Fromhold gives the best possible set of the solutions for the top layer thickness or its optical index graphically on a PC screen. In this report the basic two layer Ellipsometry theory will be summarized briefly as well as the one layer case. All the code is written in Microsoft Quickbasic version 4.5 for IBM PC with a VGA color graphics monitor so that the measurement could be cross-checked out graphically on the screen.

Commerce Lab - An enabling facility and test bed for commercial flight opportunities

Commerce Lab is conceived as an adjunct to the National Space Transportation System (NSTS) by providing a focal point for commercial missions which could utilize existing NSTS carrier and resource capabilities for on-orbit experimentation in the microgravity sciences. In this context, the Commerce Lab provides an enabling facility and test bed for commercial flight opportunities. Commerce Lab program activities to date have focused on mission planning for private sector involvement in the space program to facilitate the commercial exploitation of the microgravity environment for materials processing research and development. It is expected that Commerce Lab will provide a logical transition between currently planned NSTS missions and future microgravity science and commercial R&D missions centered around the Space Station. The present study identifies candidate Commerce Lab flight experiments and their development status and projects a mission traffic model that can be used in commercial mission planning.
