Designing a Mars surface rover

Only three categories of vehicular configuration are under consideration for the Mars rover geological exploration mission: a six-wheeled 'lunar roving vehicle' (LRV), an elastic loopwheeled mobility system (ELMS), and a 'walking' vehicle. The LRV uses three compliantly coupled modules, each of which is equipped with two powered wheels. The ELMS uses three loopwheels that are reminiscent of tracks mounted on an articulated suspension. Walkers, which use leg-like mechanisms, are the least developed of the three categories. A comparative assessment of the capabilities and economies of the three vehicle types is presented.

PIFEX: An advanced programmable pipelined-image processor

PIFEX is a pipelined-image processor being built in the JPL Robotics Lab. It will operate on digitized raster-scanned images (at 60 frames per second for images up to about 300 by 400 and at lesser rates for larger images), performing a variety of operations simultaneously under program control. It thus is a powerful, flexible tool for image processing and low-level computer vision. It also has applications in other two-dimensional problems such as route planning for obstacle avoidance and the numerical solution of two-dimensional partial differential equations (although its low numerical precision limits its use in the latter field). The concept and design of PIFEX are described herein, and some examples of its use are given.

Summary of workshop on the application of VLSI for robotic sensing

It was one of the objectives of the considered workshop to identify near, mid, and far-term applications of VLSI for robotic sensing and sensor data preprocessing. The workshop was also to indicate areas in which VLSI technology can provide immediate and future payoffs. A third objective is related to the promotion of dialog and collaborative efforts between research communities, industry, and government. The workshop was held on March 24-25, 1983. Conclusions and recommendations are discussed. Attention is given to the need for a pixel correction chip, an image sensor with 10,000 dynamic range, VLSI enhanced architectures, the need for a high-density serpentine memory, an LSI-tactile sensing program, an analog-signal preprocessor chip, a smart strain gage, a protective proximity envelope, a VLSI-proximity sensor program, a robot-net chip, and aspects of silicon micromechanics.
