Pulse modulated control synthesis for a flexible spacecraft

The describing function method is employed for the nonlinear control analysis and design of a flexible spacecraft equipped with pulse modulated reaction jets. The method provides a means of characterizing the pulse modulator in terms of its gain and phase for structural mode limit cycle analysis. Although the describing function method is inherently inexact and is not widely used in practice, a new way of utilizing it for practical control design problems is presented. It is shown that the approximations inherent in the method can be accounted as a modeling uncertainty for the nonlinear control robustness analysis. The pulse modulated control system of the Intelsat 5 spacecraft is used as an example to illustrate the concept and methodology developed in the paper. The nonlinear stability margins predicted by the describing function analysis are verified from nonlinear simulations.

Periodic-disturbance accommodating control of the Space Station for asymptotic momentum management

Periodic-disturbance accommodating control is investigated for asymptotic momentum management of control moment gyros used as primary actuating devices for the Space Station. The proposed controller utilizes the concepts of quaternion feedback control and periodic-disturbance accommodation to achieve oscillations about the constant torque equilibrium attitude, while minimizing the control effort required. Three-axis coupled equations of motion, written in terms of quaternions, are derived for roll/yaw controller design and stability analysis. The quaternion feedback controller designed using the linear-quadratic regulator synthesis technique is shown to be robust for a wide range of pitch angles. It is also shown that the proposed controller tunes the open-loop unstable vehicle to a stable oscillatory motion which minimizes the control effort needed for steady-state operations.

Computational analysis of a stability robustness margin for structured real-parameter perturbations

An efficient computational method is presented for stability robustness analysis with structured real-parameter perturbations. A generic model of a class of uncertain dynamical systems is used as an example. The parameter uncertainty is characterized by a real scalar, epsilon. Multilinearity of the closed-loop characteristic polynomial is exploited to permit application of the mapping theorem to calculate the stability robustness margin. It is found that sensitive geometry of the stability boundary in the epsilon, omega-plane renders problematic the calculation of the minimum epsilon as a function of omega. This difficulty is avoided by calculating the minimum distance to the image of the uncertainty domain over omega as a function of epsilon. It is also shown that a certain class of uncertain dynamical systems has the required multilinearity property and are thus amenable to the proposed technique.

Robust control synthesis for uncertain dynamical systems

This paper presents robust control synthesis techniques for uncertain dynamical systems subject to structured parameter perturbation. Both QFT (quantitative feedback theory) and H-infinity control synthesis techniques are investigated. Although most H-infinity-related control techniques are not concerned with the structured parameter perturbation, a new way of incorporating the parameter uncertainty in the robust H-infinity control design is presented. A generic model of uncertain dynamical systems is used to illustrate the design methodologies investigated in this paper. It is shown that, for a certain noncolocated structural control problem, use of both techniques results in nonminimum phase compensation.

A computer-aided approach to nonlinear control systhesis

The major objective of this project is to develop a computer-aided approach to nonlinear stability analysis and nonlinear control system design. This goal is to be obtained by refining the describing function method as a synthesis tool for nonlinear control design. The interim report outlines the approach by this study to meet these goals including an introduction to the INteractive Controls Analysis (INCA) program which was instrumental in meeting these study objectives. A single-input describing function (SIDF) design methodology was developed in this study; coupled with the software constructed in this study, the results of this project provide a comprehensive tool for design and integration of nonlinear control systems.

Minimum-time pointing control of a two-link manipulator

Minimum-time pointing control for the end-effector of a planar, two-link manipulator is developed. Minimum-time pointing control is a new area of research for multilink manipulators, which can be applied to rapid retargeting control of a multibody spacecraft. The minimum-time control problem of aligning the second link of the two-link manipulator with a given target point is considered. A numerical method called the minimizing-boundary-condition method is used to determine optimal solutions for the two-point boundary-value problem associated with first-order necessary conditions. Minimum-time solutions for different models of pointing systems are compared. The results of the comparison show that a two-link manipulator with two degree-of-freedom performs better than a conventional one-link system for minimum-time pointing.
