Integrated Orbit, Attitude, and Structural Control Systems Design for Space Solar Power Satellites

The major objective of this study is to develop an integrated orbit, attitude, and structural control systems architecture for very large Space Solar Power Satellites (SSPS) in geosynchronous orbit. This study focuses on the 1.2-GW Abacus SSPS concept characterized by a 3.2 x 3.2 km solar-array platform, a 500-m diameter microwave beam transmitting antenna, and a 500 x 700 m earth-tracking reflector. For this baseline Abacus SSPS configuration, we derive and analyze a complete set of mathematical models, including external disturbances such as solar radiation pressure, microwave radiation, gravity-gradient torque, and other orbit perturbation effects. The proposed control systems architecture utilizes a minimum of 500 1-N electric thrusters to counter, simultaneously, the cyclic pitch gravity-gradient torque, the secular roll torque caused by an offset of the center-of-mass and center-of-pressure, the cyclic roll/yaw microwave radiation torque, and the solar radiation pressure force whose average value is about 60 N.

Robust time-optimal control of uncertain structural dynamic systems

A time-optimal open-loop control problem of flexible spacecraft in the presence of modeling uncertainty has been investigated. The results indicate that the proposed approach significantly reduces the residual structural vibrations caused by modeling uncertainty. The results also indicate the importance of proper jet placement for practical tradeoffs among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, and performance robustness.

Robust on-off pulse control of flexible space vehicles

The on-off reaction jet control system is often used for attitude and orbital maneuvering of various spacecraft. Future space vehicles such as the orbital transfer vehicles, orbital maneuvering vehicles, and space station will extensively use reaction jets for orbital maneuvering and attitude stabilization. The proposed robust fuel- and time-optimal control algorithm is used for a three-mass spacing model of flexible spacecraft. A fuel-efficient on-off control logic is developed for robust rest-to-rest maneuver of a flexible vehicle with minimum excitation of structural modes. The first part of this report is concerned with the problem of selecting a proper pair of jets for practical trade-offs among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, structural mode excitation, and performance robustness. A time-optimal control problem subject to parameter robustness constraints is formulated and solved. The second part of this report deals with obtaining parameter insensitive fuel- and time- optimal control inputs by solving a constrained optimization problem subject to robustness constraints. It is shown that sensitivity to modeling errors can be significantly reduced by the proposed, robustified open-loop control approach. The final part of this report deals with sliding mode control design for uncertain flexible structures. The benchmark problem of a flexible structure is used as an example for the feedback sliding mode controller design with bounded control inputs and robustness to parameter variations is investigated.

Robust stabilization of the Space Station in the presence of inertia matrix uncertainty

This paper presents a robust H-infinity full-state feedback control synthesis method for uncertain systems with D11 not equal to 0. The method is applied to the robust stabilization problem of the Space Station in the face of inertia matrix uncertainty. The control design objective is to find a robust controller that yields the largest stable hypercube in uncertain parameter space, while satisfying the nominal performance requirements. The significance of employing an uncertain plant model with D11 not equal 0 is demonstrated.

Robust fuel- and time-optimal control of uncertain flexible space structures

The problem of computing open-loop, fuel- and time-optimal control inputs for flexible space structures in the face of modeling uncertainty is investigated. Robustified, fuel- and time-optimal pulse sequences are obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem subject to robustness constraints. It is shown that 'bang-off-bang' pulse sequences with a finite number of switchings provide a practical tradeoff among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, and performance robustness of uncertain flexible space structures.

Robust H-infinity control synthesis method and its application to benchmark problems

This paper presents a robust H-infinity control synthesis method for structured parameter uncertainty. The robust H-infinity control design methodology is also incorporated with the so-called internal model principle for persistent-disturbance rejection. A noncollocated control problem of flexible space structures subject to parameter variations is used to illustrate the design methodology. It is shown that the proposed design method invariably makes use of nonminimum-phase compensation and that it achieves the desired asymptotic disturbance rejection by having a disturbance rejection 'dipole'.

Robust control of flexible space vehicles with minimum structural excitation: On-off pulse control of flexible space vehicles

Both feedback and feedforward control approaches for uncertain dynamical systems (in particular, with uncertainty in structural mode frequency) are investigated. The control objective is to achieve a fast settling time (high performance) and robustness (insensitivity) to plant uncertainty. Preshaping of an ideal, time optimal control input using a tapped-delay filter is shown to provide a fast settling time with robust performance. A robust, non-minimum-phase feedback controller is synthesized with particular emphasis on its proper implementation for a non-zero set-point control problem. It is shown that a properly designed, feedback controller performs well, as compared with a time optimal open loop controller with special preshaping for performance robustness. Also included are two separate papers by the same authors on this subject.

Real parameter margin computation for uncertain structural dynamic systems

This paper is concerned with the problem of computing real parameter margins for stabilized, structural dynamic systems with the masses, spring constants, and damping constants as uncertain parameters. Numerical algorithms for uncertain systems with multilinear parameters are investigated. It is shown that for a certain class of structural dynamic systems with small passive damping (e.g., flexible structures in space), the computational complexity of the problem can be avoided by modeling the system as a conservative plant, without loss of any practical significance.

On actuator placement for robust time-optimal control of uncertain flexible spacecraft

The problem of computing open-loop, on-off jet firing logic for flexible spacecraft in the face of plant modeling uncertainty is investigated. The primary control objective is to achieve a fast maneuvering time with a minimum of structural vibrations during and/or after a maneuver. This paper is also concerned with the problem of selecting a proper pair of jets for practical trade-offs among the maneuvering time, fuel consumption, structural mode excitation, and performance robustness. A time-optimal control problem subject to parameter robustness constraints is formulated. A three-mass-spring model of flexible spacecraft with a rigid-body mode and two flexible modes is used to illustrate the concept.

Classical and robust H(infinity) control redesign for the Hubble Space Telescope

A control redesign problem of the Hubble Space Telescope for reducing the effects of solar array vibrations on telescope pointing jitter is investigated. Both classical and H(infinity) control design methodologies are employed for such a control problem with a non-colocated actuator and sensor pair. This paper successfully demonstrates the effectiveness of a dipole concept for precision line-of-sight pointing control in the presence of significant structural vibrations. Proposed controllers with two dipoles effectively reduce the effects of the solar array induced disturbances at 0.12 Hz and 0.66 Hz on pointing jitter.

Classical and robust H infinity control redesign for the Hubble Space Telescope

A control redesign problem of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for reducing the effects of solar array vibrations on telescope pointing jitter is investigated. Both classical and H infinity control design methodologies are employed for such a control problem with a non-colocated actuator and sensor pair. This pair successfully demonstrates the effectiveness of a dipole concept for precision line-of-sight pointing control in the presence of significant stuctural vibrations. Proposed controllers with two dipoles effectively reduce the effects of the solar array induced disturbances at 0.12 Hz and 0.66 Hz on pointing jitter.
