Measuring Hole Elongation in Bolted Joints

Measurement does not affect joint parameters. Verification of analytical and strength-prediction methods for bolted composite joints based generally on data obtained experimentally from double-lap-joint specimens. In mechanically fastened joints, stresses maximal at fastener holes. Ability to measure accurately hole elongations without affecting joint parameters provides better understanding of elastic and plastic behavior of joint material leading to failure mechanisms in mechanically fastened joints required for design of more-efficient, lightweight composite joints.

Strength of graphite/epoxy bolted wing-skin splice specimens subjected to outdoor exposure under constant load and yearly fatigue loading

The results of an experimental study to provide long-term durability data on detailed full-scale graphite/epoxy wing-skin joint designs under environmental exposure and cyclic loading associated with commercial transport aircraft are reported. The specimens consisted of a single-row bolt configuration fabricated from T300/5208 and a double-row bolt configuration fabricated from T300/5209. The unpainted specimens were exposed to the outdoor environment under a sustained tensile load, and at yearly intervals, they were subjected to fatigue loading. Experimental results showed a slight reduction in residual tensile strength for both graphite/epoxy joints under the exposure times and fatigue loadings reported. A 7.5-percent decrease in residual strength was observed for the T300/5208 single-row joint after 5 years exposure and two lifetimes of fatigue loading. A 5.3-percent decrease in residual strength was observed for the T300/5209 double-row joint after 7 years exposure and 2.8 lifetimes of fatigue loading. The 5208 epoxy material was more susceptible to degradation by ultraviolet radiation than the 5209 epoxy material.

Experimental data on single-bolt joints in quasi isotropic graphite/polyimide laminates

Sixteen ply, quasi-isotropic laminates of Celanese Celion 6000/PMR-15 and Celion 6000/LARC-160 with a fiber orientation of (0/45/90/-45) sub 2S were evaluated. Tensile and open hole specimens were tested at room temperature to establish laminate tensile strength and net tensile strength at an unloaded bolt hole. Double lap joint specimens with a single 4.83-mm (0.19 in.) diameter bolt torqued to 1.7 N-m (15 lbf-in.) were tested in tension at temperatures of 116 K (-250F), 297 K (75F), and 589 K (600F). The joint ratios of w/d (specimen width to hole diameter) and e/d (edge distance to hole diameter) were varied from 4 to 6 and from 2 to 4, respectively. The effect of joint geometry and temperature on failure mode and joint stresses are shown. Joint stresses calculated at maximum load for each joint geometry and test temperature are reported. Joint strength in net tension, bearing, and shear out at 116 K (-250F), 297 K (75F), and 589 K (600F) are given for the Celion 6000/PMR-15 and Celion 6000/LARC-160 laminates.

Preliminary bolted-joint data

Bolted-joint strength and failure modes for advanced graphite/polyimide composite laminates at 116K (-250 F), room temperature, and 589K (600 F) were determined to provide preliminary design data. The bolted-joint test setup for the low and elevated temperature tests is described. Test results are reported on a quasi-isotropic laminate of Celion 6000/PMR-15. Single bolt, double lap shear specimens were tested to obtain maximum joint strength and failure mode. The effect of joint geometry and temperature on joint strength and failure mode is presented.
