OSIRIS-REx Orbit Determination Performance During the Navigation Campaign

The OSIRIS-REx mission Navigation Campaign consists of three sub-phases: Approach,Preliminary Survey, and Orbital A. Approach was designed for initial characterization ofBennu while matching Bennu's heliocentric velocity. Preliminary Survey provided the firstspacecraft-based estimate of Bennu's mass. This phase consisted of five target flybys witha close approach distance of about 7 km. Orbital A was a two-month phase devoted to theNavigation Team learning the close proximity operations dynamics and environment aroundBennu and transitioning from center-finding optical navigation to landmark feature-basednavigation. This paper provides a detailed summary of the orbit determination performancethroughout the Navigation Campaign.

Orbit Determination Strategy and Simulation Performance for OSIRIS-REx Proximity Operations

The Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRISREx)is a NASA New Frontiers mission to the near-earth asteroid Bennu that will rendez vousin 2018, create a comprehensive and detailed set of observations over several years, collect a regolith sample, and return the sample to Earth in 2023. The Orbit Determination (OD) team isa sub-section of the Flight Dynamics System responsible for generating precise reconstructions and predictions of the spacecraft trajectory. The OD team processes radiometric data, LIDAR, as well as center-finding and landmark-based Optical Navigation images throughout the proximity operations phase to estimate and predict the spacecraft location within several meters. Stringent knowledge requirements stress the OD teams concept of operations and procedures to produce verified and consistent high quality solutions for observation planning, maneuver planning, and onboard sequencing. This paper will provide insight into the OD concept of operations and summarize the OD performance expected during the approach and early proximity operation phases, based on our pre-encounter knowledge of Bennu. Strategies and methods used to compare and evaluate predicted and reconstructed solutions are detailed. The use of high fidelity operational tests during early 2017 will stress the teams concept of operations and ability to produce precise OD solutions with minimal turn-around delay.

Maneuver Strategy for OSIRIS-REx Proximity Operations

The Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission will study and observe asteroid (101955) Bennu (previously known as 1999 RQ36) and subsequently collect and return a sample from the asteroid to Earth for further detailed analysis. After a successful launch in September 2016, the spacecraft will be in cruise phase for two years until arrival at asteroid Bennu in late 2018. At that time, aseries of critical maneuvers will provide an initial characterization of Bennu and the dynamical environment surrounding it, ultimately concluding with a successful capture into orbit about the small asteroid. This paper discusses some of the unique navigation challenges presented by these early operational phases in close proximity to Bennu and shares key observations and results from operational tests that have prepared the operations team and help mitigate the risks posed by these challenges.
