Spacelab energetic ion mass spectrometer

Basic design criteria are given for an ion mass spectrometer for use in studying magnetospheric ion populations. The proposed instrument is composed of an electrostatic analyzer followed by a magnetic spectrometer and simultaneously measures the energy per unit and mass per unit charge of the ion species. An electromagnet is used for momentum analysis to extend the operational energy range over a much wider domain than is possible with the permanent magnets used in previous flights. The energetic ion source regions, ion energization mechanisms, field line tracing, coordinated investigations, and orbit considerations are discussed and operations of the momentum analyzer and of the electrostatic energy analyzer are examined.

Laboratory studies of the charge neutralization of a rocket payload during electron beam emission

The charge neutralization of an electrically-isolated rocket payload emitting an energetic electron beam has been studied in experiments in the large vacuum chamber at Johnson Space Center. The introduction of an RF-discharge-produced ambient plasma density (10,000 to 50,000 per cu cm) reduces the payload potential to 200 V for low current (1 and 10 ma) beams. The ignition of the beam-plasma discharge provides an efficient neutralization process for higher current beams.

Rocket observation of high frequency waves over a strong aurora

High frequency waves in two frequency bands above the electron gyro frequency (1.6 MHz and 2.3 MHz) were observed by radio receivers carried on a sounding rocket as it passed over a strong aurora. Only the line at 2.3 MHz has a large magnetic component. Both 0.4s and 4s periods are present in much of the emissions. Good correlation is seen for a short time between the 2.3 MHz waves and 1.9 keV electrons detected on board the rocket.

Simultaneous investigation of parent electrons and bremsstrahlung X rays by rocket-borne detectors

Simultaneous measurements of the energy spectrum of precipitating electrons and the resulting bremsstrahlung X-ray spectrum were carried out during an auroral event on March 3, 1971, at the Churchill Research Range, Manitoba, Canada. The electron data were obtained with detectors on a Black Brant VB sounding rocket (275-km apogee), while the X-ray flux was measured by an instrument package that was boosted to 60 km on an Arcas rocket. The X-ray package was deployed on a parachute at apogee to provide a slow descent through the atmosphere. Thick-target bremsstrahlung theory is used to calculate the X-ray flux produced by the incident electrons, and a Monte Carlo method is used to predict the X-ray spectrum at various altitudes appropriate for comparison with the measured X-ray data. Satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is obtained, and the value of the constant in the thick target theory has been estimated to be about 0.00002.
