Integrated Thermal Control for Mars Rover

The Mars Rover has been built, environmentally tested and qualified for the 1996 launch of the Pathfinder mission to Mars. The basic structure for the thermal control for the Mars Rover is the Warm Electronics Box (WEB). This consists of a thermal isolating composite structure with co-cured thermal control surfaces and an ultralightweight hydrophobic solid silica aerogel which minimizes conduction and radiation.

Lightweight, Thermally Insulating Structural Panels

Lightweight, thermally insulating panels that also serve as structural members developed. Honeycomb-core panel filled with low-thermal-conductivity, opacified silica aerogel preventing convection and minimizes internal radiation. Copper coating on face sheets reduces radiation. Overall thermal conductivities of panels smaller than state-of-art commercial non-structurally-supporting foam and fibrous insulations. On Earth, panels suitable for use in low-air-pressure environments in which lightweight, compact, structurally supporting insulation needed; for example, aboard high-altitude aircraft or in partially evacuated panels in refrigerators.

Regenerative Sorption Refrigerator

Two-stage sorption refrigerator achieves increased efficiency via regenerative-heating concept in which waste heat from praseodymium/cerium oxide (PCO) chemisorption compressor runs charcoal/krypton (C/Kr) sorption compressor. Waste heat from each PCO sorption compressor used to power surrounding C/Kr sorption compressor. Flows of heat in two compressor modules controlled by gas-gap thermal switches. Has no wearing moving parts other than extremely long life, room-temperature check valves operating about twice per hour. Virtually no measurable vibration, and has potential operating life of at least ten years.

Two-statge sorption type cryogenic refrigerator including heat regeneration system

A lower stage chemisorption refrigeration system physically and functionally coupled to an upper stage physical adsorption refrigeration system. Waste heat generated by the lower stage cycle is regenerated to fuel the upper stage cycle thereby greatly improving the energy efficiency of a two-stage sorption refrigerator. The two stages are joined by disposing a first pressurization chamber providing a high pressure flow of a first refrigerant for the lower stage refrigeration cycle within a second pressurization chamber providing a high pressure flow of a second refrigerant for the upper stage refrigeration cycle. The first pressurization chamber is separated from the second pressurization chamber by a gas-gap thermal switch which at times is filled with a thermoconductive fluid to allow conduction of heat from the first pressurization chamber to the second pressurization chamber.

Encapsulants And Corrosion In Photovoltaic Modules

Paper reports studies of effects of moisture on photovoltaic modules, presenting data useful in further quantitative studies of such phenomena. Measured data used in computer simulation of two-dimensional conduction to analyze ionic-conduction characteristics of PVB- and EVA-encapsulated modules. Notes encapsulant plays important role in electrochemical processes in photovoltaic module. Indicates how variations in design parameters affect levels of leakage currents in modules. Points out likely leakage-current paths in modules at various temperatures and humidities. Compares results of field and laboratory tests of same specimens and notes greater severity of outdoor environment.

Two stage sorption type cryogenic refrigerator including heat regeneration system

A lower stage chemisorption refrigeration system physically and functionally coupled to an upper stage physical adsorption refrigeration system is disclosed. Corrosion In Amorphous-Silicon Solar Cells And Modules

Paper reports on corrosion in amorphous-silicon solar cells and modules. Based on field and laboratory tests, discusses causes of corrosion, ways of mitigating effects, and consequences for modules already in field. Suggests sealing of edges as way of reducing entry of moisture. Cell-free perimeters or sacrificial electrodes suggested to mitigate effects of sorbed moisture. Development of truly watertight module proves to be more cost-effective than attempting to mitigate effects of moisture.

Program for Paraboloidal Solar Concentrators

Solar-Concentrator Code for Paraboloidal Dishes (SOLCOL) aids in design and analysis of solar collectors in space station. Calculates quality of solar image and flux distribution on specified target surface. Receiver target is focal plane cylinder, hemisphere, or any arbitrary surface, normals to which supplied. Used to assess optical performance of concentrator. Written in FORTRAN 77.
