Structural transition and anisotropic magnetism in disordered Zintl phase Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8

Single crystals of the Zintl compound Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 were synthesized using a Ga-Sb flux. We report the temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) dependence of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), magnetization (M), resistivity (ρ), specific heat (C), and thermal expansion (α). We also report high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction data that support a structural phase transition with accompanying signatures seen in C(T), ρ(T), and α(T). We find Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering at T N1 = 9.0 K from anomalies seen in χ(T), C(T), and α(T), as well as a potential reorientation of Eu 2+ spins at T N2 = 7.5 K and T N3 = 7.2 K. In conclusion, density functional theory calculations predict Eu 7 Ga 6 Sb 8 to be semiconducting; however, electrical resistivity measurements show bad-metal behavior that indicates the presence of disorder.

Nonsymmorphic symmetry-protected band crossings in a square-net metal PtPb 4

Topological semimetals with symmetry-protected band crossings have emerged as a rich landscape to explore intriguing electronic phenomena. Nonsymmorphic symmetries in particular have been shown to play an important role in protecting the crossings along a line (rather than a point) in momentum space. Here we report experimental and theoretical evidence for Dirac nodal line crossings along the Brillouin zone boundaries in PtPb 4 , arising from the nonsymmorphic symmetry of its crystal structure. Interestingly, while the nodal lines would remain gapless in the absence of spin–orbit coupling (SOC), the SOC, in this case, plays a detrimental role to topology by lifting the band degeneracy everywhere except at a set of isolated points. Nevertheless, the nodal line is observed to have a bandwidth much smaller than that found in density functional theory (DFT). Our findings reveal PtPb 4 to be a material system with narrow crossings approximately protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetries.

In Situ Methods for Metal-Flux Synthesis in Inert Environments

Flux growth synthesis is an advantageous synthetic method as it allows for the growth of single crystals of both congruently melting and metastable phases. The determination of synthetic parameters for the flux growth of new crystalline phases is complex as many factors and parameters need to be considered, such as purity and morphology of starting material and heating profile variables including maximum temperature, dwell time, cooling rate and flux removal temperature. In situ monitoring of crystallite growth can lead to elucidation of reaction intermediates and growth mechanisms. The determination of pivotal reaction parameters can revolutionize the way growth parameters are selected. In this work, we report a new sample environment and furnace apparatus for synchrotron in situ synthesis of crystalline materials, including flux grown intermetallics.
