Diffusion-assisted growth of periodic patterns on metal surfaces

Periodic patterns formed on various solid surfaces could seriously affect the properties of materials. Understanding the underlying mechanism is a key step to apply and control pattern formation in many fields. In this work, periodic patterns induced by low energy plasma exposures on tungsten surfaces are observed and related new formation mechanisms are developed. Results from experiments and computer simulations demonstrate that atom diffusion accelerated by low energy and high flux exposures is the dominant mechanism for pattern formation. Additionally, a similar pattern formation has been confirmed by plasma exposure experiments on molybdenum. Based on this mechanism, patterns with controllable size and shape have been successfully prepared on tungsten surface by adjusting plasma exposure parameters, which may provide a new understanding of pattern formation and related surface damage in tungsten induced by plasma exposures.

Power management for wireless nodes

A system includes a rectifier having an input configured to receive a variable AC input voltage and convert the AC input voltage to a rectified output voltage. A power converter has an input coupled to receive the rectified output voltage and to provide a DC supply voltage at an output thereof. A low drop-out regulator has an input coupled to receive the supply voltage and is configured provide a regulated voltage. A sensor is coupled to receive the regulated voltage as a power source and is configured to sense a condition and provide sensor data indicative of the sensed condition.

spopt: a python package for solving spatial optimization problems in PySAL

Spatial optimization is a major spatial analytical tool in management and planning, the significance of which cannot be overstated. Spatial optimization models play an important role in designing and managing effective and efficient service systems such as transportation, education, public health, environmental protection, and commercial investment among others. To this end, spopt (spatial optimization) is under active development for the inclusion of newly proposed models and methods for regionalization, facility location, and transportation-oriented solutions (Feng et al., 2021). Spopt is a submodule in the open-source spatial analysis library PySAL (Python Spatial Analysis Library) founded by Dr. Sergio J. Rey and Dr. Luc Anselin in 2005 (Rey et al., 2015, 2021; Rey & Anselin, 2007). The goal of developing spopt is to provide management and decision-making support to all relevant practitioners and to further promote the appropriate and meaningful application of spatial optimization models in practice.
