Petrology of crystalline matrix breccias from Apollo 17 rake samples

The petrology, mineralogy, and composition of 13 crystalline matrix breccias from the Apollo 17 rake samples are described. The breccias have matrices of uniform modal mineralogy (plagioclase, 50-54%; olivine and pyroxene, 41-46%) but diverse textures. Clast characteristics, including the proportion of plagioclase, the composition in comparison with matrix, and the textures of different clast types, are reported. The majority of bulk matrix compositions plot on or very near the plagioclase-olivine cotectic in the system olivine-anorthite-silica. If the matrix compositions represent impact total melts, the inferred cotectic control requires that the source material was itself an igneous differentiate with compositions along the plagioclase-olivine cotectic. Alternatively, the proximity of the matrix compositions to the plagioclase-olivine cotectic could be accounted for if the breccia matrices represent a suite of impact-generated partial melts.

Consortium investigation of breccia 67435

The paper presents results of the initial phase of a consortium investigation of lunar rock 67435, a glass coated breccia which contains a unique spinel-troctolite clast. These results include oxygen isotopic data for the host breccia, bulk composition data for the host breccia, glass coating and a large aphanitic clast, and detailed petrographic descriptions of all lithologies encountered.

Rocks 60618 and 65785 - Evidence for admixture of KREEP in lunar impact melts

We present evidence to support the hypothesis that the fine-grained, basaltic-textured portions of rocks 60618 and 65785 were produced by impact melting of the coarse-grained spinel-olivine anorthosite (60618) and spinel troctolite (65785) portions, coupled with admixture of approximately 33% and 63%, respectively, material of alkalic high-alumina basalt (KREEP) composition. The abundance of impact-modified rocks at the Apollo 16 site with compositional similarities to the impact melts reported here, suggests that the relations observed in these rocks are indicative of widespread impact mixing with KREEP in rocks of the lunar highlands.
