Manipulating Aromaticity to Redirect Topochemical Polymerization Pathways

Topochemical polymerization (TCP) represents an essential route to create regio- and stereoregular polymers through solid-state transformations. Herein, we present an innovative strategy for controlling topochemical polymerization pathways by tailoring the terminal group aromaticity in the para-azaquinodimethane (AQM) ring system. Substituting phenyl groups with less aromatic furyl units extends significant spin density delocalization across the conjugated core upon thermal activation, inducing significant diradicaloid characters at furyl positions and enabling unconventional reactivities in both solution and solid states. Thermal treatment in toluene yields a unique cyclophane dimer formed via furyl-methine C-C coupling, confirmed by X-ray crystallography, while solid-state reactions produce polymers formed via both intercolumnar furyl-methine coupling and intracolumnar methine-methine coupling. The spin-center-directed mechanism underlying these transformations is validated through theoretical modeling and isotopic labeling experiments. This study highlights the prowess of aromaticity modulation in functional pro-aromatic systems, which enables the synthesis of polymers with main chain structures that are otherwise difficult to access.

Machine learning-accelerated discovery of heat-resistant polysulfates for electrostatic energy storage

The development of heat-resistant dielectric polymers that withstand intense electric fields at high temperatures is critical for electrification. Balancing thermal stability and electrical insulation, however, is exceptionally challenging as these properties are often inversely correlated. A traditional intuition-driven polymer design approach results in a slow discovery loop that limits breakthroughs. Here we present a machine learning-driven strategy to rapidly identify high-performance, heat-resistant polymers. A trustworthy feed-forward neural network is trained to predict key proxy parameters and down select polymer candidates from a library of nearly 50,000 polysulfates. The highly efficient and modular sulfur fluoride exchange click chemistry enables successful synthesis and validation of selected candidates. A polysulfate featuring a 9,9-di(naphthalene)-fluorene repeat unit exhibits excellent thermal resilience and achieves ultrahigh discharged energy density with over 90% efficiency at 200 °C. Its exceptional cycling stability underscores its promise for applications in demanding electrified environments.

Direct ladderization of cyclooctatetraene-containing, processable conjugated ladder polymers from annulated bis-zirconacyclopentadienes

Conjugated ladder polymers (CLPs) are difficult yet captivating synthetic targets due to their fully unsaturated fused backbones. Inherent challenges associated with their synthesis often lead to low yields, structural defects, and insoluble products. Here a new method to form CLPs is demonstrated, utilizing a high-yielding dimerization of annulated zirconacyclopentadienes to form cyclooctatetraene (COT) monomer units. The resulting COT-containing polymers form rapidly in a single ladderization step from the bis-zirconacyclopentadiene precursors and display M n up to 29.7 kg mol -1 . The polymers represent rare examples of CLPs with negatively curved rings, resulting in the observation of unusual properties. The rigid tub-shaped COT units embedded in the backbone imbue the polymers with microporosity, exhibiting BET surface areas up to 555 m 2 g -1 . Additionally, the remarkable solubility of these CLPs in organic solvents enables the fabrication of thin films showcasing high dielectric performance with a discharged energy density as high as 6.54 J cm -3 at 650 MV m -1 .
