Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Nanoscale Manipulation of Wrinkle-Pinned Vortices in Iron-Based Superconductors

The controlled manipulation of Abrikosov vortices is essential for both fundamental science and logical applications. However, achieving nanoscale manipulation of vortices while simultaneously measuring the local density of states within them remain challenging. Here, we demonstrate the manipulation of Abrikosov vortices by moving the pinning center, namely one-dimensional wrinkles, on the terminal layers of Fe(Te,Se) and LiFeAs, by utilizing low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S). The wrinkles trap the Abrikosov vortices induced by the external magnetic field. In some of the wrinkle-pinned vortices, robust zero-bias conductance peaks are observed. We tailor the wrinkle into short pieces and manipulate the wrinkles by using an STM tip. Strikingly, we demonstrate that the pinned vortices move together with these wrinkles even at high magnetic field up to 6 T. Our results provide a universal and effective routine for manipulating wrinkle-pinned vortices and simultaneously measuring the local density of states on the iron-based superconductor surfaces.

Superconductivity above 200 K discovered in superhydrides of calcium

Searching for superconductivity with T c near room temperature is of great interest both for fundamental science & many potential applications. Here we report the experimental discovery of superconductivity with maximum critical temperature (T c ) above 210 K in calcium superhydrides, the new alkali earth hydrides experimentally showing superconductivity above 200 K in addition to sulfur hydride & rare-earth hydride system. The materials are synthesized at the synergetic conditions of 160~190 GPa and ~2000 K using diamond anvil cell combined with in-situ laser heating technique. The superconductivity was studied through in-situ high pressure electric conductance measurements in an applied magnetic field for the sample quenched from high temperature while maintained at high pressures. The upper critical field Hc(0) was estimated to be ~268 T while the GL coherent length is ~11 Å. The in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements suggest that the synthesized calcium hydrides are primarily composed of CaH 6 while there may also exist other calcium hydrides with different hydrogen contents.
