Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfone) Random Copolymers for Direct Air Capture

Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising tool for reducing CO 2 concentrations in the atmosphere and fighting climate change. We synthesized a series of quaternary ammonium (QA) functionalized poly(arylene ether sulfone) copolymers with varying mole fractions of charge content and demonstrated their potential as sorbents for DAC. Molecular weight analysis determined high monomer conversion was achieved in <6 h and relatively high molecular weights for all copolymer compositions. Thermal analysis revealed all polymers had degradation temperatures >240 °C and a single glass transition temperature (T g ); the T g decreased with an increase in ion exchange capacity (IEC). Fractional free volume and water uptake percentage increased and water contact angle decreased with the number of QA sites when compared to a neutral, commercially available polysulfone (Udel® P-1700 PSU). Next, the novel series of ammonium-functionalized copolymers exhibited a moisture-mediated capture and release of atmospheric CO 2 . When exposed to air containing 30% relative humidity the polymers captured CO 2 and the capacity increased with the IEC. When the relative humidity was increased to 95% the samples released the CO 2 . This study demonstrates a promising CO 2 DAC sorbent and highlights the possibility for continuous DAC with purpose-built free-standing membranes.

Moisture-driven CO 2 pump for direct air capture

Direct Air Capture, the chemical separation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from air, is considered a necessary approach to generate negative carbon emissions and in turn limit global warming, though energetic and monetary costs must continue to decline to meet the needed gigaton scale. The promise of energy-efficient and continuous carbon dioxide membrane separation has only recently been investigated with the development of facilitated chemical transport and novel electrochemically driven methods. This work demonstrates the potential for continuous pumping of CO 2 from air using commercial anion exchange membranes driven solely by a water vapor gradient. A reactive transport model that couples ionic transport with moisture sensitive bicarbonate chemistry in charged polymers, also termed moisture swing sorption, was developed alongside experimentally measured equilibrium and transport properties of CO 2 and water vapor in Fumasep FAA-3 to determine the mass transport limits of such a system. The results show that the commercial membrane is kinetically limited by the moisture sensitive chemistry, enabling a CO 2 current of 1.1 μmol/m 2 • s. In diffusion limited materials, a CO 2 pumping flux can reach 11 μmol/m 2 • s in and peak performance is expected with a dry air relative humidity around 50% pumping into a saturated water vapor permeate. In all configurations, water loss becomes the major cost in such a separation and must be managed through optimal polymer design or water recovery mechanisms. The work demonstrates the applicability of a new driving force, the evaporation of water, to meet the energetic demand of CO 2 separation from air.

Pressure Ratio to Thermal Environments

A pressure ratio to thermal environments (PRatTlE.pl) program is a Perl language code that estimates heating at requested body point locations by scaling the heating at a reference location times a pressure ratio factor. The pressure ratio factor is the ratio of the local pressure at the reference point and the requested point from CFD (computational fluid dynamics) solutions. This innovation provides pressure ratio-based thermal environments in an automated and traceable method. Previously, the pressure ratio methodology was implemented via a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and macro scripts. PRatTlE is able to calculate heating environments for 150 body points in less than two minutes. PRatTlE is coded in Perl programming language, is command-line-driven, and has been successfully executed on both the HP and Linux platforms. It supports multiple concurrent runs. PRatTlE contains error trapping and input file format verification, which allows clear visibility into the input data structure and intermediate calculations.
