Oscillations of a viscous compound drop

The effect of viscosity on normal mode oscillations of a compound drop is determined for a range of values of the viscosity, and the effect of a host medium is considered. The general form of the dispersion relation is derived, and numerical values are obtained for the case of an annular liquid region composed of silicon oil and with the core and host regions taken to be air. Results indicate that the sloshing mode of the compound drop is more damped than the bubble mode.

Filter Bed of Packed Spheres

Spheres sized and treated for desired sieve properties. Filter constructed from densely packed spheres restrained by screens. Hollow gas-filled plastic or metal spheres normally used. Manufactured within one percent or better diameter tolerance. Normally, all spheres in filter of same nominal diameter. Filter used as sieve to pass only particles smaller than given size or to retain particles larger than that size. Options available under filter concept make it easy to design for specific applications.

A theoretical model for the annular jet instability

The instability of an annular gas-core liquid jet is modeled theoretically by treating the liquid layer as a membrane moving under the influences of its own inertia, surface tension, and the gaseous hydrostatic pressure difference between its two sides. Essential physical mechanisms are reconstructed without making any attempt to fit experimental data with model constants. The results compare favorably with those of experiment.

Shapes of rotating free drops - Spacelab experimental results

The experimental observation of the behavior of acoustically rotated free drops in the microgravity environment of low earth orbit has yielded the first data which meet the restrictions of existing theoretical treatments. Rotating drops displayed both 'axisymmetric' and 'two-lobed' shapes in the presence and absence of applied torques. Their dimensions and general development confirm the existence of the distinct shape families and the bifurcation point between them. The data also indicate that the secular instability in the axisymmetric family occurs at a lower rotation velocity than predicted

Sensational spherical shells

Fluid-dynamic and capillary forces can be used to form nearly perfect, very small spherical shells when a liquid that can solidify is passed through an annular die to form an annular jet. Gravity and certain properties of even the most ideal materials, however, can cause slight asymmetries. The primary objective of the present work is the control of this shell formation process in earth laboratories rather than space microgravity, through the development of facilities and methods that minimize the deleterious effects of gravity, aerodynamic drag, and uncontrolled cooling. The spherical shells thus produced can be used in insulation, recyclable filter materials, fire retardants, explosives, heat transport slurries, shock-absorbing armor, and solid rocket motors.

Spacelab 3 drop dynamics experiments

Positioning techniques using the effects of acoustic-radiation pressure were used during the Spacelab 3 flight to carry out classical fluid dynamics experiments on liquid drops freely suspended in microgravity. Quantitative results dealing with the equilibrium shapes of acoustically rotated drops, with the response to the radiation pressure forces, and finally with the experimental measurement of surface tension have been obtained.

Viscous damping of the oscillations of a rotating simple drop

The viscous damping of the small-amplitude capillary oscillations of a rotating simple drop is calculated in the small viscosity limit. The calculation concerns the case of a liquid drop in a gaseous medium, which is relevant to the space processing of materials using acoustic levitation. The method used is that of Lamb in which the inviscid solutions of the problem are used as trial functions in the energy equation to find the damping coefficient.

Centrifugal Generator of Filled Spherical Shells

Centrifugal apparatus produces filled spherical shells for wide range of industrial and scientific applications. Rotating container has radially extending nozzle in which centrifugal force draws liquid shell material from container. Liquid shell material fed from outside container and automatically maintained at fixed level. Along axis of nozzle is tube that connects through rotating seal to source of gas or other filler material. Material-flow and rotation rates adjusted to change bubble size.

Experimental study of the oscillations of a rotating drop

Two- and three-lobed oscillations of a rotating liquid drop immersed in an immiscible fluid of comparable density and the same angular velocity were studied experimentally. Using acoustically suspended drops, it has been found that the relative change in the resonance frequencies of the axisymmetric drop-shape oscillations Delta omega-l/omega-l(0) is proportional to the square of the normalized angular speed (Omega/omega-l/0)-squared when omega-l greater than 2 Omega. This is in agreement with a recent analytical study of the same problem. Some preliminary results regarding the effect of rotation on the free-decay rate of the two-lobed oscillations are also presented.

Force on a heated sphere in a horizontal plane acoustic standing wave field

The force on a heated sphere in a horizontal plane acoustic standing wave field is the subject of this investigation. The heated sphere produces a thermal gradient in the resonance chamber. The force on the sphere in a direction perpendicular to that of gravity is measured. This force is enhanced in the region near the pressure node, and is weakened in the region near the pressure antinode. Measurements of the force on a heated sphere with sound pressure levels between 148 and 156 dB are presented.

Fusion Target Technology

In order to produce the high quality spherical shells that are required, three parameters must be controlled accurately: the shell dimensions, shell sphericity and concentricity, and the surface topology of the shell. Attempts to conduct experiments on the dynamics of liquid bubbles (molten shells) in laboratories are limited by a strong coupling among the three parameters, time, gravity, and temperature. These limitations are circumvented and detailed study of each of the important processes is carried out through the use of low gravity environments collectively available in drop towers, in KC-135 flights, in a neutrally buoyant immiscible system, and in an acoustic levitation system.

Advanced Containerless Processing Technology

Breadboards for high temperature containerless processing systems are to be developed, the principles of operation are to be studied, the performance is to be characterized, the limitations identified, and the influence of the acoustic field on the samples established. The subjects to be addressed are experimental and theoretical studies of: (1) acoustic positioning and manipulation capabilities in a high temperature gradient environment (from 26 C to 990 C); (2) acoustic waveforms, harmonic contents, power transfer, sample transport and stability associated with high temperature gradient system; (3) high temperature ground based levitation systems which will allow melting, processing, and solidifying samples without crucibles in the laboratory, (4) KC-135 and laboratory tests of various acoustic geometries which may have spherical applications in the Materials Processing in Space Program; and (5) provide technical information to Acoustics Containerless Experimental System (ACES) engineering team and establish the operation conditions for ACES.

Oscillations of a compound drop system undergoing rotation

A compound liquid-drop system is comprised of three immiscible concentric fluids: a core fluid of density p(i) surrounded by a shell of density p(s) which is embedded in a medium of density p(o). In this analysis, the fluids are incompressible and inviscid. The effect of rotation upon the modes of oscillation of a compound drop is investigated. Rotation rate is considered as a small perturbation of the normal modes of the compound drop, thus introducing the effects of a Coriolis force and a centrifugal distortion.

Acoustic Levitation With One Driver

Report discusses acoustic levitation in rectangular chamber using one driver mounted at corner. Placement of driver at corner enables it to couple effectively to acoustic modes along all three axes. Use of single driver reduces cost, complexity and weight of levitation system below those of three driver system.

Applications of spherical shells

A new technique of producing hollow spheres of many materials at a very rapid rate, at very low cost, and with high reproducibility of shell diameter and wall thickness has been developed. Shells formed of metal or of other solid materials are expected to find numerous technical and industrial applications. For example, metal shells might be used as inertial confinement fusion targets, or as the principal constituents in lightweight structural materials for NASA Space Stations or DOD large antennas and mirrors, or be employed as containers for phase-change heat-storage media, or serve as containers for hazardous materials, or be employed as catalytic surface agents.
