Social support and cognitive function in Chinese older adults who experienced depressive symptoms: is there an age difference?

Objective This study examined the moderating effect of overall social support and the different types of social support on cognitive functioning in depressed older adults. We also investigated whether the moderating effect varied according to age. Methods A total of 2,500 older adults (≥60 years old) from Shanghai, China were enrolled using a multistage cluster sampling method. Weighted linear regression and multiple linear regression was utilized to analyze the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function and to explore its differences in those aged 60–69, 70–79, and 80 years and above. Results After adjusting for covariates, the results indicated that overall social support (β = 0.091, p = 0.043) and support utilization (β = 0.213, p < 0.001) moderated the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive function. Support utilization reduced the possibility of the cognitive decline in depressed older adults aged 60–69 years (β = 0.310, p < 0.001) and 80 years and above (β = 0.199, p < 0.001), while objective support increased the possibility of cognitive decline in depressed older people aged 70–79 years (β = −0.189, p < 0.001). Conclusion Our findings highlight the buffering effects of support utilization on cognitive decline in depressed older adults. We suggest that age-specific measures should be taken when providing social support to depressed older adults in order to reduce the deterioration of cognitive function.

Changes in serum-neutralizing antibody potency and breadth post-SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine boost

A better understanding of the durability and breadth of serum-neutralizing antibody responses against multiple severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants elicited by COVID-19 vaccines is crucial in addressing the current pandemic. In this study, we quantified the decay of serum neutralization antibodies (nAbs) after second and third doses of the original COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. Using an authentic virus-neutralization assay, we found that decay half-lives of WA1- and Delta-nAbs were both ~60 days after second and third vaccine dose. Unexpectedly, the durability of serum antibodies that neutralize three different Omicron subvariants (BA.1.1, BA.5, BA.2.12.1) was substantially better, with half-lives of ≥6 months. A booster dose of the original COVID-19 vaccine was also found to broaden antibody responses against SARS-CoV and four other sarbecoviruses, in addition to multiple SARS-CoV-2 strains. These findings suggest that repeated vaccinations with the COVID-19 vaccine may confer a degree of protection against future spillover of sarbecoviruses from animal reservoirs.

Effects of penta‐coordinated Al 3+ sites and Ni defective sites on Ni/ Al 2 O 3 for CO methanation

Abstract Engineering sophisticated structure of Al 2 O 3 and controlling the structure of counterpart metal active sites remain challenges to achieve a high catalytic‐performance in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we present a confinement strategy to stabilize homogeneous Ni by penta‐coordinated Al 3+ anchoring sites in Al 2 O 3 . This approach is involved in using a metal–organic framework as host to load Ni 2+ ions, by the aim of producing a confined Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst after a standard calcination. Metal–support interaction between Ni and Al 2 O 3 was tailored to be medium to avoid the formation of inactive NiAl 2 O 4 , which favors the generation of more available Ni active sites accessible to the reactants. The resultant Ni/Al 2 O 3 exhibited superior catalytic performance in comparison with the control Ni/Al 2 O 3 in CO methanation owing to the presence of defective sites on sufficient Ni 0 surface. Furthermore, the presence of oxygen vacancies on Al 2 O 3 and hydrogen spillover contributed toward excellent coke resistance properties in the reaction.

A bistable and reconfigurable molecular system with encodable bonds

Molecular systems with ability to controllably transform between different conformations play pivotal roles in regulating biochemical functions. Here, we report the design of a bistable DNA origami four-way junction (DOJ) molecular system that adopts two distinct stable conformations with controllable reconfigurability by using conformation-controlled base stacking. Exquisite control over DOJ’s conformation and transformation is realized by programming the stacking bonds (quasi–blunt-ends) within the junction to induce prescribed coaxial stacking of neighboring junction arms. A specific DOJ conformation may be achieved by encoding the stacking bonds with binary stacking sequences based on thermodynamic calculations. Dynamic transformations of DOJ between various conformations are achieved by using specific environmental and molecular stimulations to reprogram the stacking codes. This work provides a useful platform for constructing self-assembled DNA nanostructures and nanomachines and insights for future design of artificial molecular systems with increasing complexity and reconfigurability.

An Inorganic‐Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Advanced Lithium‐Metal Batteries in Carbonate Electrolytes

Abstract In carbonate electrolytes, the organic–inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the Li‐metal anode surface is strongly bonded to Li and experiences the same volume change as Li, thus it undergoes continuous cracking/reformation during plating/stripping cycles. Here, an inorganic‐rich SEI is designed on a Li‐metal surface to reduce its bonding energy with Li metal by dissolving 4 m concentrated LiNO 3 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as an additive for a fluoroethylene‐carbonate (FEC)‐based electrolyte. Due to the aggregate structure of NO 3 − ions and their participation in the primary Li + solvation sheath, abundant Li 2 O, Li 3 N, and LiN x O y grains are formed in the resulting SEI, in addition to the uniform LiF distribution from the reduction of PF 6 − ions. The weak bonding of the SEI (high interface energy) to Li can effectively promote Li diffusion along the SEI/Li interface and prevent Li dendrite penetration into the SEI. As a result, our designed carbonate electrolyte enables a Li anode to achieve a high Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency of 99.55 % (1 mA cm −2 , 1.0 mAh cm −2 ) and the electrolyte also enables a Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) full cell (2.5 mAh cm −2 ) to retain 75 % of its initial capacity after 200 cycles with an outstanding CE of 99.83 %.

Large-scale genome sequencing of mycorrhizal fungi provides insights into the early evolution of symbiotic traits

Mycorrhizal fungi are mutualists that play crucial roles in nutrient acquisition in terrestrial ecosystems. Mycorrhizal symbioses arose repeatedly across multiple lineages of Mucoromycotina, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota. Considerable variation exists in the capacity of mycorrhizal fungi to acquire carbon from soil organic matter. Here, we present a combined analysis of 135 fungal genomes from 73 saprotrophic, endophytic and pathogenic species, and 62 mycorrhizal species, including 29 new mycorrhizal genomes. This study samples ecologically dominant fungal guilds for which there were previously no symbiotic genomes available, including ectomycorrhizal Russulales, Thelephorales and Cantharellales. Our analyses show that transitions from saprotrophy to symbiosis involve (1) widespread losses of degrading enzymes acting on lignin and cellulose, (2) co-option of genes present in saprotrophic ancestors to fulfill new symbiotic functions, (3) diversification of novel, lineage-specific symbiosis-induced genes, (4) proliferation of transposable elements and (5) divergent genetic innovations underlying the convergent origins of the ectomycorrhizal guild.
