Improvement on fuzzy controller design techniques

This paper addresses three main issues, which are somewhat interrelated. The first issue deals with the classification or types of fuzzy controllers. Careful examination of the fuzzy controllers designed by various engineers reveals distinctive classes of fuzzy controllers. Classification is believed to be helpful from different perspectives. The second issue deals with the design according to specifications, experiments related to the tuning of fuzzy controllers, according to the specification, will be discussed. General design procedure, hopefully, can be outlined in order to ease the burden of a design engineer. The third issue deals with the simplicity and limitation of the rule-based IF-THEN logical statements. The methodology of fuzzy-constraint network is proposed here as an alternative to the design practice at present. It is our belief that predicate calculus and the first order logic possess much more expressive power.

Design of QMF (Quadrature Mirror Filter) in spatial domain and edge encoding

Simoncelli and Adelson have extended the one dimensional Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) to two dimensions with hexagon symmetry and three dimensional spatio-temporal extensions with rhombic-duodecahedray symmetry. Jain and Crochiere presented an excellent QMF design technique in the time domain. It is proposed to extend the design of a two dimensional QMF over a rectangular lattice in the spatial domain based primarily on the extension of the idea of Jain and Crochiere. In addition, the design will investigate the use of two dimensional Z-transformations. Since this proposed QMF is intended for the applications in image processing, all the important and interesting engineering issues will be addressed throughout the development phase. The design of a two dimensional QMF is discussed. The motivation is to achieve an extremely high data compression ratio. It is entirely possible to achieve dramatic results when pattern recognition techniques are employed. The final goal is the demonstration of extremely high data compression ratios using NASA pictures.

Mars Rover imaging systems and directional filtering

Computer literature searches were carried out at Duke University and NASA Langley Research Center. The purpose is to enhance personal knowledge based on the technical problems of pattern recognition and image understanding which must be solved for the Mars Rover and Sample Return Mission. Intensive study effort of a large collection of relevant literature resulted in a compilation of all important documents in one place. Furthermore, the documents are being classified into: Mars Rover; computer vision (theory); imaging systems; pattern recognition methodologies; and other smart techniques (AI, neural networks, fuzzy logic, etc).
