Nanocomposite-seeded epitaxial growth of single-domain lithium niobate thin films for surface acoustic wave devices

A method for making LNO film, including the steps of identifying a substrate, identifying a deposition target, placing the substrate and deposition target in a deposition environment, evolving target material into the deposition environment, and depositing evolved target material onto the substrate to yield an LNO film. The deposition environment defines a temperature of between 500 degrees Celsius and 750 degrees Celsius and a pressure of about 10 −6 Torr. A seed or buffer layer may be first deposited onto the substrate, wherein the seed layer is about 30 mole percent gold and about 70 LiNbO 3 .

The Role of Transition Metals on Chemo-Mechanical Instabilities in Prussian Blue Analogues For K-Ion Batteries: The Case Study on KNHCF Versus KMHCF

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) cathodes can host diverse monovalent and multivalent metal ions due to their tunable structure. However, their electrochemical performance suffers from poor cycle life associated with chemo-mechanical instabilities. This study investigates the driving forces behind chemo-mechanical instabilities in Ni- and Mn-based PBAs cathodes for K-ion batteries by combining electrochemical analysis, digital image correlation, and spectroscopy techniques. Capacity retention in Ni-based PBA is 96% whereas it is 91.5% for Mn-based PBA after 100 cycles at C/5 rate. During charge, the potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNHCF) electrode experiences a positive strain generation whereas the potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate (KMHCF) electrode undergoes initially positive strain generation followed by a reduction in strains at a higher state of charge. Overall, both cathodes undergo similar reversible electrochemical strains in each charge–discharge cycle. There is ~0.80% irreversible strain generation in both cathodes after 5 cycles. XPS studies indicated richer organic layer compounds in the cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) layer formed on KMHCF cathodes compared to the KNHCF ones. Faster capacity fades in Mn-based PBA, compared to Ni-based ones, is attributed to the formation of richer organic compounds in CEI layers, rather than mechanical deformations. In conclusion, understanding the driving forces behind instabilities provides a guideline to develop material-based strategies for better electrochemical performance.

Thin film design of amorphous hafnium oxide nanocomposites enabling strong interfacial resistive switching uniformity

A design concept of phase-separated amorphous nanocomposite thin films is presented that realizes interfacial resistive switching (RS) in hafnium-oxide-based devices. The films are formed by incorporating an average of 7% Ba into hafnium oxide during pulsed laser deposition at temperatures ≤400°C. The added Ba prevents the films from crystallizing and leads to ~20-nm-thin films consisting of an amorphous HfO x host matrix interspersed with ~2-nm-wide, ~5-to-10-nm-pitch Ba-rich amorphous nanocolumns penetrating approximately two-thirds through the films. This restricts the RS to an interfacial Schottky-like energy barrier whose magnitude is tuned by ionic migration under an applied electric field. Resulting devices achieve stable cycle-to-cycle, device-to-device, and sample-to-sample reproducibility with a measured switching endurance of ≥10 4 cycles for a memory window ≥10 at switching voltages of ±2 V. Each device can be set to multiple intermediate resistance states, which enables synaptic spike-timing–dependent plasticity. The presented concept unlocks additional design variables for RS devices.

In Situ Study on Cu-to-Cu Thermal Compression Bonding

Cu-to-Cu thermal compression bonding (TCB) has emerged as a promising solution for ultrafine pitch packaging in 3D integrated circuit technologies. Despite the progress made by conventional Cu-to-Cu TCB methods in achieving good mechanical strength of the Cu bonds, the bonding processes generally require high temperature and high pressure, which may degrade the performance and reliability of the device. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the processing parameters to understand the bonding mechanism and achieve effective TCB at a low temperature and low pressure. Here, we developed an in situ TCB technique inside a scanning electron microscope. The in situ TCB method enables a real-time observation of bonding development, which provides critical insights into how the texture and microstructure of Cu bumps may influence the creep and surface diffusion during the bonding process. This work features a strategy to advance our understanding of the bonding mechanisms and provides insight into tailoring the microstructure of Cu for bonding at a low temperature and low pressure.

Gradient nanostructured steel with superior tensile plasticity

Nanostructured metallic materials with abundant high-angle grain boundaries exhibit high strength and good radiation resistance. While the nanoscale grains induce high strength, they also degrade tensile ductility. We show that a gradient nanostructured ferritic steel exhibits simultaneous improvement in yield strength by 36% and uniform elongation by 50% compared to the homogenously structured counterpart. In situ tension studies coupled with electron backscattered diffraction analyses reveal intricate coordinated deformation mechanisms in the gradient structures. The outermost nanolaminate grains sustain a substantial plastic strain via a profound deformation mechanism involving prominent grain reorientation. This synergistic plastic co-deformation process alters the rupture mode in the post-necking regime, thus delaying the onset of fracture. The present discovery highlights the intrinsic plasticity of nanolaminate grains and their significance in simultaneous improvement of strength and tensile ductility of structural metallic materials.

Tunable Magnetic and Optical Anisotropy in ZrO 2 ‐Co Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

Abstract Metamaterials have gained great research interest in recent years owing to their potential for property tunability, multifunctionality, and property coupling. As a new group of self‐assembled thin films, vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN)‐based hybrid metamaterials have been demonstrated with significant anisotropic physical properties and a broad range of property tailorability, such as optical anisotropy, magnetic anisotropy, hyperbolic dispersion, and enhanced second harmonic generation properties. Herein, self‐assembled ZrO 2 ‐Co nanocomposite films, with high epitaxial quality and ultra‐fine vertically aligned Co nanopillars (with an average diameter of ≈2 nm) embedded in a ZrO 2 matrix, are fabricated using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The Co pillar density can be effectively tuned by varying the Co concentration in the target, which results in tunable optical properties and magnetic properties. Specifically, a high saturation magnetization of 100 emu cm −3 , strong out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy and tailorable magnetization properties are achieved via tuning the Co nanopillar density. Coupled with hyperbolic dispersion of dielectric constant from 950 to 1500 nm in wavelength, plasmonic Co metal nanopillars, and the unique dielectric ZrO 2 matrix, this new nanoscale hybrid metamaterial shows great potential for future integrated optical and magnetic device designs.

An Interface–Type Memristive Device for Artificial Synapse and Neuromorphic Computing

Interface-type (IT) metal/oxide Schottky memristive devices have attracted considerable attention over filament-type (FT) devices for neuromorphic computing because of their uniform, filament-free, and analog resistive switching (RS) characteristics. The most recent IT devices are based on oxygen ions and vacancies movement to alter interfacial Schottky barrier parameters and thereby control RS properties. However, the reliability and stability of these devices have been significantly affected by the undesired diffusion of ionic species. Herein, a reliable interface-dominated memristive device is demonstrated using a simple Au/Nb-doped SrTiO 3 (Nb:STO) Schottky structure. The Au/Nb:STO Schottky barrier modulation by charge trapping and detrapping is responsible for the analog resistive switching characteristics. Because of its interface-controlled RS, the proposed device shows low device-to-device, cell-to-cell, and cycle-to-cycle variability while maintaining high repeatability and stability during endurance and retention tests. Furthermore, the Au/Nb:STO IT memristive device exhibits versatile synaptic functions with an excellent uniformity, programmability, and reliability. A simulated artificial neural network with Au/Nb:STO synapses achieves a high recognition accuracy of 94.72% for large digit recognition from MNIST database. These results suggest that IT resistive switching can be potentially used for artificial synapses to build next-generation neuromorphic computing.

Face mask integrated with flexible and wearable manganite oxide respiration sensor

Face masks are key personal protective equipment for reducing exposure to viruses and other environmental hazards such as air pollution. Integrating flexible and wearable sensors into face masks can provide valuable insights into personal and public health. The advantages that a breath-monitoring face mask requires, including multi-functional sensing ability and continuous, long-term dynamic breathing process monitoring, have been underdeveloped to date. Here, we design an effective human breath monitoring face mask based on a flexible La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)/Mica respiration sensor. The sensor’s capabilities and systematic measurements are investigated under two application scenes, namely clinical monitoring mode and daily monitoring mode, to monitor, recognise, and analyse different human breath status, i.e., cough, normal breath, and deep breath. This sensing system exhibits super-stability and multi-modal capabilities in continuous and long-time monitoring of the human breath. We determine that during monitoring human breath, thermal diffusion in LSMO is responsible for the change of resistance in flexible LSMO/Mica sensor. Both simulated and experimental results demonstrate good discernibility of the flexible LSMO/Mica sensor operating at different breath status. Our work opens a route for the design of novel flexible and wearable electronic devices.

Engineering of Grain Boundaries in CeO 2 Enabling Tailorable Resistive Switching Properties

Abstract Defect engineering in valence change memories aimed at tuning the concentration and transport of oxygen vacancies are studied extensively, however mostly focusing on contribution from individual extended defects such as single dislocations and grain boundaries. In this work, the impact of engineering large numbers of grain boundaries on resistive switching mechanisms and performances is investigated. Three different grain morphologies, that is, “random network,” “columnar scaffold,” and “island‐like,” are realized in CeO 2 thin films. The devices with the three grain morphologies demonstrate vastly different resistive switching behaviors. The best overall resistive switching performance is shown in the devices with “columnar scaffold” morphology, where the vertical grain boundaries extending through the film facilitate the generation of oxygen vacancies as well as their migration under external bias. The observation of both interfacial and filamentary switching modes only in the devices with a “columnar scaffold” morphology further confirms the contribution from grain boundaries. In contrast, the “random network” or “island‐like” structures result in excessive or insufficient oxygen vacancy concentration migration paths. The research provides design guidelines for grain boundary engineering of oxide‐based resistive switching materials to tune the resistive switching performances for memory and neuromorphic computing applications.

Anisotropic optical and magnetic response in self-assembled TiN–CoFe 2 nanocomposites

Transition metal nitrides (e.g., TiN) have shown tremendous promise in optical metamaterials for nanophotonic devices due to their plasmonic properties comparable to noble metals and superior high temperature stability. Vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs) offer a great platform for combining two dissimilar functional materials with a one-step deposition technique toward multifunctionality integration and strong structural/property anisotropy. Here, we report a two-phase nanocomposite design combining ferromagnetic CoFe 2 nanosheets in the plasmonic TiN matrix as a new hybrid plasmonic metamaterial. The hybrid metamaterials exhibit anisotropic optical and magnetic responses, as well as a pronounced magneto-optical coupling response evidenced by Magneto-optic Kerr Effect measurement, owing to the novel vertically aligned structure. This work demonstrates a new TiN-based metamaterial with anisotropic properties and multifunctionality toward light polarization modulation, optical switching, and integrated optics.

Controllable Phase Transition Properties in VO 2 Films via Metal-Ion Intercalation

VO 2 has shown great promise for sensors, smart windows, and energy storage devices, because of its drastic semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) near 340 K coupled with a structural transition. To push its application toward room-temperature, effective transition temperature (T c ) tuning in VO 2 is desired. Here, in this study, tailorable SMT characteristics in VO 2 films have been achieved by the electrochemical intercalation of foreign ions (e.g., Li ions). By controlling the relative potential with respect to Li/Li + during the intercalation process, T c of VO 2 can be effectively and systematically tuned in the window from 326.7 to 340.8 K. The effective T c tuning could be attributed to the observed strain and lattice distortion and the change of the charge carrier density in VO 2 introduced by the intercalation process. This demonstration opens up a new approach in tuning the VO 2 phase transition toward room-temperature device applications and enables future real-time phase change property tuning.
