Electrospun Ti–Zr Oxide Heterostructures Enable Strongly Anchored Ultralow-Ir Anodes for Durable Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) requires acidic oxygen-evolution-reaction (OER) anodes that combine high activity, high durability, and low Ir loading. Here, we report a Ti-Zr composite electrospun oxide (ESO) nanorod support that enables ultralow-Ir anodes for high-performance PEMWE. Zr-containing Ti oxide heterostructures stabilize anatase-rich TiO2, tune the local oxygen-coordination environment, and strengthen interfacial anchoring of IrOx under acidic anodic conditions. The electrospun nanorod network further creates an open, mechanically coherent catalyst layer that improves Ir utilization, ionomer penetration, and mass transport. At an anode loading of 0.2 mgIr cm-2, the optimized Ir/TiZr20-ESO anode delivers a PEMWE mass activity of 0.99 A mgIr-1 at 1.45 V, 28.3 and 43.0 times higher than commercial Ir black and commercial IrO2/TiO2, respectively. The same anode reaches 3.0 and 4.0 A cm-2 at 1.75 and 1.83 V, respectively, and sustains 2000 h operation at 2.0 A cm-2. Also, accelerated stress tests up to 525 hours over 31,500 cycles confirm promising long-term durability, with an insignificant performance decay of 0.4 μV per cycle. Density functional theory indicates that the Ti-Zr oxide heterostructure suppresses Ti demetallation and strengthens IrO2 interfacial binding, rationalizing the improved high-current-density stability.

Surface Self-Diffusion Induced Sintering of Nanoparticles

Despite the critical role of sintering phenomena in constraining the long-term durability of nanosized particles, a clear understanding of nanoparticle sintering has remained elusive due to the challenges in atomically tracking the neck initiation and discerning different mechanisms. Through the integration of in situ transmission electron microscopy and atomistic modeling, this study uncovers the atomic dynamics governing the neck initiation of Pt–Fe nanoparticles via a surface self-diffusion process, allowing for coalescence without significant particle movement. Real-time imaging reveals that thermally activated surface morphology changes in individual nanoparticles induce significant surface self-diffusion. Further, the kinetic entrapment of self-diffusing atoms in the gaps between closely spaced nanoparticles leads to the nucleation and growth of atomic layers for neck formation. This surface self-diffusion-driven sintering process is activated at a relatively lower temperature compared to the classic Ostwald ripening and particle migration and coalescence processes. The fundamental insights have practical implications for manipulating the morphology, size distribution, and stability of nanostructures by leveraging surface self-diffusion processes.

Stabilizing Nickel‐Rich Cathodes in Aqueous Process through Nanocellulose as Water Barrier

Nickel-rich LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NMC 811) cathode offers high voltage and high specific capacity, making it promising for high energy density batteries. However, large-scale manufacturing of aqueous-processed NMC 811 electrodes remains challenging due to proton exchange causing material decomposition and capacity loss. This work addresses this issue by constructing an in situ nanocellulose protective layer for NMC 811 particles via electrostatic interactions during the slurry preparation. For the first time, the interatomic spacing between inter-chains of nanocellulose is measured through wide-angle X-ray scattering and demonstrate the ability to effectively confine interlayer water using atomistic simulations. Moreover, this nanocellulose coverage simultaneously minimizes Li + surface segregation and mitigates water infiltration. Owing to less material decomposition during the aqueous processing, nanocellulose-protected NMC electrodes exhibit higher initial coulombic efficiency (83% vs 62% at 0.1C) and capacity (133 vs 59 mAh g −1 at 6C) than unprotected electrodes. Additionally, optimized aqueous-processed NMC electrodes offer comparable or even superior electrochemical properties compared to the electrodes fabricated using the conventional toxic organic solvent, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Consequently, the developed approach enables affordable, sustainable aqueous processing for Nickel-rich NMC 811 cathodes with excellent electrochemical performances.
