MEASURE-Jupiter: Low Cost Missions to Explore Jupiter in the Post-Galileo Era

MEASURE-Jupiter is a mission concept for the first wave of new missions to explore the giant planets in the post-Galileo era. This paper addresses the feasibility of low-cost, focused science missions to explore Jupiter based on the science information returned by the Galileo mission.

Proposed new concepts for an advanced search and rescue satellite system

Methods of reducing the forwarding time from COSPAS/SARSAT (Space System for Search of Distressed Vessels/Search and Rescue Satellite-Aided Tracking System) satellite passage until a location is supplied to the search and rescue (SAR) forces are studied. It is shown how supplemental use of geostationary satellites or institution off-polar ground stations can reduce the time delay from 62 min to 7 min. The tradeoff between the two approaches is their cost and complexity versus time delay reduction. Sample systems are developed here in order to examine the tradeoffs.

A propagation effects handbook for satellite systems design. A summary of propagation impairments on 10-100 GHz satellite links, with techniques for system design

This handbook provides satellite system engineers with a concise summary of the major propagation effects experienced on Earth-space paths in the 10 to 100 GHz frequency range. The dominant effect, attenuation due to rain, is dealt with in terms of both experimental data from measurements made in the U.S. and Canada, and the mathematical and conceptual models devised to explain the data. Rain systems, rain and attenuation models, depolarization and experimental data are described. The design techniques recommended for predicting propagation effects in Earth-space communications systems are presented. The questions of where in the system design process the effects of propagation should be considered, and what precautions should be taken when applying the propagation results are addressed in order to bridge the gap between the propagation research data and the classical link budget analysis of Earth-space communications system.

An experimental measurement of galactic cosmic radiation dose in conventional aircraft between San Francisco and London compared to theoretical values for conventional and supersonic aircraft

These direct measurements are in fair agreement with computations made using a program which considers both basic cosmic ray atmospheric physics and the focusing effect of the earth's magnetic field. These measurements also agree with those made at supersonic jet aircraft altitudes in Rb-57 aircraft. It is concluded that experiments and theory show that the doses received at conventional jet aircraft altitudes are slightly higher than those encountered in supersonic flights at much higher altitudes.
