Efficient Nondestructive Evaluation of Prototype Carbon Fiber Reinforced Structures

Thermography and shearography methods of inspection rely on optic based technologies and can reduce the time and cost required to inspect composite tanks or aerostructures. Usually areas identified as suspect in the initial inspection results are reexamined with ultrasonic methods. This combination of techniques results in a rapid and comprehensive inspection of composite structures. Development of useful defect standards will be discussed. Examples of application of this inspection philosophy to prototype, GSE, and flight hardware will be presented. Methods organizing the inspection and evaluating the results will be considered.

Study Acoustic Emissions from Composites

The purpose of this work will be to develop techniques for monitoring the acoustic emissions from carbon epoxy composite structures at cryogenic temperatures. Performance of transducers at temperatures ranging from ambient to cryogenic and the characteristics of acoustic emission from composite structures will be studied and documented. This entire effort is directed towards characterization of structures used in NASA propulsion programs such as the X-33.

Acoustic method of damage sensing in composite materials

The use of acoustic emission and acousto-ultrasonics to characterize impact damage in composite structures is being performed on both graphite epoxy and kevlar bottles. Further development of the acoustic emission methodology to include neural net analysis and/or other multivariate techniques will enhance the capability of the technique to identify failure mechanisms during fracture. The acousto-ultrasonics technique will be investigated to determine its ability to predict regions prone to failure prior to the burst tests. The combination of the two methods will allow for simple nondestructive tests to be capable of predicting the performance of a composite structure prior to being placed in service and during service.

On-orbit operational scenarios, tools, and techniques

A derivation of OMV developed PC-based mission planning tools is described. Preliminary application of these tools was used to show that detailed description of events and mission modeling complexity can be accommodated easily. Also, spreadsheet models can be expanded to increase detail.

On-orbit operational scenarios, tools and techniques

This paper concentrates on methods and techniques used to develop operational scenarios for orbital missions, including development of models to analyze alternatives, modification of tools and refinement of techniques for future missions. Many of these tools and techniques have been derived from previous tools, techniques and experience from the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) program. Results from use of these tools show the current Cargo Transfer Vehicle nominal mission scenario, with 95 discrete events defined for the CTV mission from the NLS Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle (HLLV) to Space Station Freedom (SSF).
