Designing High-Frequency Inductors

Procedures for ferrite-core and Molypermalloy-core inductors detailed. Report presents design procedures for two types of highfrequency inductors: those with iron or ferrite cores and lumped airgaps and those with Molypermally powder cores and distributed airgaps.

Designing dc Inductors With Airgaps

Optimal parameters obtained designing near saturation point. New iterative procedure aids design of dc inductors with airgaps in cores. For given core area and length, technique gives design having specified inductance and peak flux density in core, using minimum required copper weight. Executed rapidly on programmable, hand-held calculator. Applications include lightweight inductors for aircraft electronics.

Designing high frequency ac inductors using ferrite and Molypermalloy Powder Cores (MPP)

The major considerations in the design of high frequency ac inductors are reviewed. Two methods for designing the inductor: the area product method and the core geometry method, are presented. The two major effects of the inductor air gap, fringing flux power loss and increase of inductance, are discussed. Equations for the inductor design and a step-by-step design procedure are given. The use of a lumped air gap or a distributed air gap are discussed and a comparison of the losses resulting from these gaps, together with experimental results are presented.

Direct-Current Unbalance Detector

Short circuits to ground indicated by voltage changes. Current transducer connected in bridge circuit with floating 30-Vdc power supply measures voltage unbalance between positive and negative powerlines and ground. Detection circuit output swings higher or lower than normal balanced condition voltage to signify unbalance toward positive or negative side respectively. Circuit configuration adaptable to monitor 4- to 20-mA current loops often found in industrial controls.

Multiplexed battery-bypass control system

Cell-bypass control system senses low capacity cells before they overcharge or discharge. Relay automatically removes defective cell (when it is detected) from battery circuit. System shows promise for improving batteries in computer standby power systems, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.

Inverter ratio failure detector

A failure detector which detects the failure of a dc to ac inverter is disclosed. The inverter under failureless conditions is characterized by a known linear relationship of its input and output voltages and by a known linear relationship of its input and output currents. The detector includes circuitry which is responsive to the detector's input and output voltages and which provides a failure-indicating signal only when the monitored output voltage is less by a selected factor, than the expected output voltage for the monitored input voltage, based on the known voltages' relationship. Similarly, the detector includes circuitry which is responsive to the input and output currents and provides a failure-indicating signal only when the input current exceeds by a selected factor the expected input current for the monitored output current based on the known currents' relationship.
