Interferometer Detects Acoustic Emissions in Composites

Embedded single-mode optical fibers sample internal-stress fields directly. Statically loaded composite matrix emits pulsed ultrasonic waves which mechanically modulate embedded fiber and phase-modulate transmitted optical field. Modulation detected by optical interferometry and Fourier optical processing converted to electronic signal proportional to acoustic field amplitude integated along length of fiber embedded in specimen. Technique used for measurements of both high- and low-frequency CW acoustic fields as well as high-frequency transients.

Distributed strain measurement in a rectangular plate using an array of optical fiber sensors

Single mode optical fiber waveguide has been used to determine the two-dimensional strain distribution on a simply supported rectangular plate. Each of the fifty individual fibers in the rectangular grid array attached to one surface of the plate yields a measurement of the strain integrated along the length of that fiber on the specimen. By using similar sensor information from all of the fibers, both the functional form and the amplitude of the distribution may be determined. Limits on the dynamic range and spatial resolution are indicated. Applications in the measurement of internal strain and the monitoring of physically small critical-structural components are suggested.

Stress concentration measurement in a rectangular plate using an array of embedded optical fibers

Embedded single mode optical fiber waveguide has been used to determine the two-dimensional stress distribution produced by point loading on a simply supported rectangular plate. Each of the fifty individual fibers in the rectangular grid array attached to the plate yields a measurement of the stress integrated along the length of that fiber on the specimen. By using information from all the fibers, both the functional form and the amplitude of the distribution may be determined. Limits on the dynamic range and spatial resolution are indicated. Applications in the measurement of internal stress and the monitoring of physically small critical structural components are suggested.

Acoustooptic pulse-echo transducer system

A pulse-echo transducer system which uses an ultrasonic generating element and an optical detection technique is described. The transmitting transducer consists of a concentric ring electrode pattern deposited on a circular, X-cut quartz substrate with a circular hole in the center. The rings are independently pulsed with a sequence high voltage signals phased in such a way that the ultrasonic waves generated by the separate rings superimpose to produce a composite field which is focused at a controllable distance below the surface of the specimen. The amplitude of the field reflected from this focus position is determined by the local reflection coefficient of the medium at the effective focal point. By processing the signals received for a range of ultrasonic transducer array focal lengths, the system can be used to locate and size anomalies within solids and liquids. Applications in both nondestructive evaluation and biomedical scanning are suggested.

Optical fiber interferometer for the study of ultrasonic waves in composite materials

The possibility of acoustic emission detection in composites using embedded optical fibers as sensing elements was investigated. Optical fiber interferometry, fiber acoustic sensitivity, fiber interferometer calibration, and acoustic emission detection are reported. Adhesive bond layer dynamical properties using ultrasonic interface waves, the design and construction of an ultrasonic transducer with a two dimensional Gaussian pressure profile, and the development of an optical differential technique for the measurement of surface acoustic wave particle displacements and propagation direction are also examined.

Detection of acoustic emission in composites by optical fiber interferometry

Acoustic emission in prestressed composite panels using embedded single mode optical fiber was detected. Static loading of the composite matrix produces acoustic emission events, pulsed ultrasonic waves, which mechanically modulate the embedded fiber geometry and phase modulate the transmitted optical field. The modulation is detected by optical interferometry and Fourier optical processing techniques to produce an electronic signal proportional to acoustic field amplitude integrated along the length of the fiber in the specimen. Static and dynamic calibration of the detection system is discussed and frequency domain characterization of the acoustic field interaction with the fiber is presented.
