The paper presents an overview of the ground rules, assumptions, methodology, operations model, element designs, base site plan, and quantitative findings. These findings include the performance of various regolith and ice resource utilization schemes as a function of base location and lunar surface parameters. The paper closes with short lists of the highest priority experiments and demonstrations needed on the lunar surface to retire key planning unknowns.
The All-Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE) robotic mobility platform can provide precision positioning and mobility for site preparation and regolith construction needs. ATHLETE is a multi-use platform designed to use swap-out tools and implements that can be applied to any number of tasks that need precision limb manipulation or mobility. Major capabilities include off-loading habitats, transporting surface assets, robotically assembling outposts from multiple mission manifests, and supporting science and technology objectives. This paper describes conceptual approaches for supporting NASA regolith construction research, such as additive construction, modular brick and panel factory, and mobile ISRU platform.
A device has been developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, for the adsorption of contaminants inside a space instrument during flight. The molecular adsorber was developed for use on the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, and it has been shown to perform at its design specifications in the WFPC-2. The basic principle of the molecular adsorber is a zeolite-coated ceramic honeycomb. The arrangement is efficient for adsorption and also provides the needed rigidity to retain the special zeolite coating during the launch vibrational environment. The adsorber, on other forms, is expected to be useful for all flight instruments sensitive to internal sources of contamination. Typically, some internal contamination is unavoidable. A common design solution is to increase the venting to the exterior. However, for truly sensitive instruments, the external contamination environment is more severe. The molecular adsorber acts as a one-way vent to solve this problem. Continued development is planned for this device.
A model has been developed for quantitative examination of the integrated operation of a lunar base power system, employing regenerative fuel cell technology, which would lead to incorporation into a lunar base life support system. A model has been developed for quantitative examination of the integrated operation of the lunar base power system, employing regenerative fuel cell technology, which would lead to incorporation into a lunar base life support system. The model employs methods developed for technology and system trade studies of the Life Support System configuration for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This paper describes the power system and its influence on life support while comparing various technologies, including pressurized gas storage and cryogenic storage, and different operation conditions. Based on preliminary assumptions, the mass, power, and thermal requirement estimates are made at the level of major components. The relative mass contribution and energy requirements of the components in various configurations are presented. The described intractions between power and life support include direct influence, such as water and oxygen storage, and indirect influence, through reliability and maintenance considerations.
