FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

A Ba 6 Cu 31 Te 22 ( A = K, Rb, Cs) Featuring Polyanionic Copper–Telluride Frameworks with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

In this study, hree polyanionic tellurides, ABa 6 Cu 31 Te 22 (A = K, Rb, Cs), were synthesized in salt flux. The isostructural tellurides crystallize in a new structure type, in the cubic Pa$\overline{3}$ space group with a Wyckoff sequence of d 10 c 2 b 1 and large unit cell volumes of over 5500 Å 3 . The structures feature a framework of [CuTe 4 ] tetrahedra and [CuTe 3 ] trigonal pyramids with disorder in the Cu sites. The polyanionic frameworks have large square antiprism and cuboctahedral voids where Ba and alkali metal cations are situated, forming [BaTe 8 ] and [ATe 12 ], respectively. The overall compositions are close to being charge balanced. The large [ATe 12 ] cuboctahedra allowed for significant anisotropic displacement of the A cations, as observed from both single crystal X-ray diffraction and heat capacity studies. Alkali cations rattling together with Cu atom displacement and disorder leads to the dispersion of phonons, thus softening the lattice and subsequently reducing the thermal conductivity. Evaluations of the electronic band structure revealed the occurrence of a narrow bandgap together with the presence of a flat band near the valence band maximum, giving rise to the high thermopower. The Cs and Rb analogues show a slope change in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity around room temperature, which is typical for semimetals or degenerate semiconductors. For the as-synthesized and unoptimized materials, high values of the thermoelectric figure-of-merit of ~0.2 were observed at 623 K.

Unveiling a Family of Dimerized Quantum Magnets, Conventional Antiferromagnets, and Nonmagnets in Ternary Metal Borides

Dimerized quantum magnets are exotic crystalline materials where Bose–Einstein condensation of magnetic excitations can happen. However, known dimerized quantum magnets are limited to only a few oxides and halides. Here, we unveil 9 dimerized quantum magnets and 11 conventional antiferromagnets in ternary metal borides MTB 4 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Lu, Mg, Ca, and Al; T = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni), where T atoms are arranged in structural dimers. Quantum magnetism in these compounds is dominated by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr (Cr and Mn for M = Mg and Ca) atoms within the dimers, with much weaker interactions between the dimers. These systems are proposed to be close to a quantum critical point between a disordered singlet spin-dimer phase, with a spin gap, and the ordered conventional Néel AFM phase. They greatly enrich the materials inventory that allows investigations of the spin-gap phase. Conventional antiferromagnetism in these compounds is dominated by ferromagnetic Mn (Fe for M = Mg and Ca) interactions within the dimers. The predicted stable and nonmagnetic (NM) YFeB 4 phase is synthesized and characterized, providing a scarce candidate to study Fe dimers and Fe ladders in borides. The identified quantum, conventional, and NM systems provide a platform with abundant possibilities to tune the magnetic exchange coupling by doping and study the unconventional quantum phase transition and conventional magnetic transitions. Finally, this work opens new avenues for studying novel magnetism in borides arising from spin dimers and establishes a theoretical workflow for future searches for dimerized quantum magnets in other families of materials.

Organizing Chaos: Boosting Thermoelectric Properties by Ordering the Clathrate Framework of Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30

The type I clathrate, Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 , is reinvestigated and found to have a low-temperature polymorph mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 with ordered Cu and As sites. In situ temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction experiments guided synthetic efforts toward the synthesis of the ordered monoclinic ( mP 108) and disordered cubic ( cP 54) polymorphs with high phase purity. While a transition from mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 to cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is not directly observed, cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 is stabilized through quenching from high temperatures and is confirmed through high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Further, combined theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the thermoelectric properties of both polymorphs reveal that the ordering of Cu and As atoms in the clathrate framework simultaneously enhances the Seebeck coefficient and electronic conductivity by increasing the hole effective mass and reducing the electronic scattering events. Consequently, the zT of mP 108-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 reaches a maximum of 0.2 at 575 K, an order of magnitude higher than that of cP 54-Ba 8 Cu 16 As 30 .

A Recipe for a Great Meal: A Benchtop Route from Elemental Se to Superior Thermoelectric β-Ag 2 Se

The low-temperature modification of β-Ag 2 Se has proven to be useful as a near-room-temperature thermoelectric material. Over the past years, research has been devoted to interstitial, vacancy, and substitutional doping into the parent β-Ag 2 Se structure, aiming at tuning the material’s charge and heat transport properties to enhance thermoelectric performance. The transformation of β-Ag 2 Se into α-Ag 2 Se at ~134 °C and the low solubility of dopants are the main obstacles for the doping approach. Herein, we report a facile, safe, scalable, and cost-effective benchtop approach to successfully produce metal-doped β-Ag 2 Se. The doped materials display a remarkable enhancement of thermoelectric performance with a record-high peak zT of 1.30 at 120 °C and an average zT of ~1.15 in the 25–120 °C range for 0.2 at. % Zn-doped Ag 2 Se. The enhancement in zT is attributed to point defects created by Zn doping into Ag vacancies/interstitials, which enhances the scattering of phonons and tunes the charge carrier properties, leading to the significant suppression of thermal conductivity. In conclusion, the simplicity of the synthetic method developed herein and the high performance of the final products provide an avenue to produce high-quality Ag 2 Se-based thermoelectric materials.

Enhancing Properties with Distortion: A Comparative Study of Two Iron Phosphide Fe 2 P Polymorphs

Iron phosphide (Fe 2 P) crystallizes in its own hexagonal crystal structure type (h-Fe 2 P). As found in meteorites, orthorhombic polymorph (o-Fe 2 P) was originally reported as a high-temperature and high-pressure phase. Recently, o-Fe 2 P was described as being stable at ambient pressure, yet no synthetic methods were developed for single-crystal growth or single-phase bulk powder synthesis. Here, we report a successful method for growing o-Fe 2 P single crystals and synthesizing phase-pure polycrystalline samples using tin-flux. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the phase transition from o-Fe 2 P to h-Fe 2 P occurs at about 873 K, and below that temperature, the formation of the o-Fe 2 P phase is favored thermodynamically rather than kinetically. Systematic comparison of transport, magnetic, and electrocatalytic properties of both h-Fe 2 P and o-Fe 2 P phases showed a substantial impact of the crystal structure on properties. The orthorhombic structural distortion resulted in considerable changes in magnetic properties, with the o-Fe 2 P phase exhibiting a 60% lower Fe magnetic moment and a substantially higher ferromagnetic Curie temperature than h-Fe 2 P. Further, electrochemical measurements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media showed that the o-Fe 2 P phase requires an 80 mV lower overpotential than the h-Fe 2 P phase to generate a current density of -10 mA/cm 2 , and their electronic structures suggest that the higher density of states at the Fermi energy is the origin of superior catalytic activity in o-Fe 2 P.
